PDF Editor FAQ

Do male gynecologists sometimes get turned on when an attractive woman visits for a checkup?

Due to conflicts of interest, Male Gynaecologists, Doctors and their supporters will mostly not say the TRUTH.Despite that, There are some answers from the Doctors themselves (see collapsed answers) :- "Yes, Why not?", "Yes. But, Not very often", "What goes in the mind, no one knows", "Yes, It is natural".Apart from these answers, Most others are saintly as expected. And Their claims are hard to prove (or) disprove, If one has to rest their decision on their answers.Suppose We collect the browsing data of Medical college/hostel. If We can find evidences that they too love to watch nude female form, breasts and genitals, Then, They will again say Compartmentalisation- Clinical setting is different. If We get some of them in to the lab and experiment with standard equipments to measure penile blood flow, to check whether they show arousal on visual sexual stimuli, They will again say Compartmentalisation. We can give occasional sexual violations as proof that there is sexual aspects to some clinical examinations. But They will say they are deviants. If We try to give studies on human sexuality as proof, They will say they are not the average/normal man. There is an old proverb:- “It's always possible to wake someone from sleep, but no amount of noise will wake someone who is pretending to be asleep.”So, Is there any other way to get in to the TRUTH?! I think Yes.Let me present some of the things I found.(1)This is highly charged question in the current societal situation. But, I found this Netherland Paper,1992.Sexual contact in the doctor-patient relationship in The Netherlands. Some highlights:85% of the Male Gynaecologists had felt sexually attracted to a patient at some time. This percentage is 27% for female gynaecologists.(Note that there is high incentive for them to say NO)Conclusion of the paper :Sexuality exists in the doctor-patient relationship. Gynaecologists have a higher risk of having sexual contact with their patients than do ear, nose, and throat specialists but compensate for this greater risk by a higher state of recognition and acknowledgement.(2)Managing erotic feelings in the physician-patient relationship - PubMedThis 1995 Paper titled :- Managing erotic feelings in the physician-patient relationshipIf there is really nothing sexual about it as Doctors now claim, Why do we worry about managing erotic feelings? At least one honest pondering by a doctor here :Let's talk about sexThis is how the article starts:Do you ever find your patients sexually attractive? Have you ever been sexually aroused while seeing a patient? Have you ever prolonged a physical examination because you were enjoying the sight of someone's body? Have you ever had an enduring sexual fantasy about one of your patients? Have you at any time considered initiating a sexual relationship with a patient? Over the past year or so, I have become particularly interested in these questions. I have also become curious about why it seems impossible for most of us to discuss them.(3)Sexual Attraction to ClientsThis one is the survey of Psychotherapists.Highlight: 95% of Men have been sexually attracted to the clients. There is no wonder in this. If We ask Dentists, Ophthalmologists, Perhaps They too can acknowledge their sexual attraction to the patients. If a woman is reasonably beautiful, perhaps She may live in several men’s fantasies! But, For Male Gynaecologists- Our Gentleman already looks up ladies’ skirts. He is in the position to deny the sexual attraction. The words chosen here may sound harsh. But That is How they guard their professional appearance, with fine euphemisms! Many may think It must be either clinical or sexual. But, It is not like that. It is possible to do the clinical exam while also getting sexual gratification/erotic rewards, Like our Psychotherapist who can acknowledge the sexual attraction, while also doing his job.It is the area of overlap! “There is nothing sexual about it” is as moronic as saying “There is nothing clinical about it”. As far as I know, Not many patients say that There is nothing clinical about it. Patients acknowledge that It has to be done for the clinical purposes. But, The morons are the others who say , “There is nothing sexual about it”.One of My Friend is a photographer. He mostly takes video shoot for wedding functions. When He describes his Job, He uses to add, “In this Job, You can openly stare at beautiful ladies. You can even tell them to smile and even tell them to take certain poses. I also love to take part in the beautiful occasions of the other people!”.Now This does not mean He is exclusively in to staring at the beautiful ladies. He is skilled at his Job - Photography. Beautiful ladies are side rewards that He considers worth mentioning when talking about his profession! But, Most probably He won’t say the same thing to his clients!(4)Doctors & Sex Abuse: Still forgivenThis is the underground investigation by the atlanta journal on sexual abuses by doctors.Highlights:Reputation is not the predictor of abuse. Many doctors who sexually abused patients, just retain their license. Most are given medical ethics training and advised to have chaperone while examining the female patients.(5)https://journals.lww.com/academicmedicine/fulltext/2018/12000/sexual_harassment_in_medical_schools__the.17.aspxThis Paper worries about the prevalence of Sexual Harassment in Medical schools.Highlight:Sexual harassment continues to be distressingly common in medical training. In a recent meta-analysis of 51 studies published over a 24-year period (1987–2011), the authors found that more than half (59.4%) of trainees had experienced at least one form of harassment or discrimination during their training, most commonly perpetrated by individuals more senior to them rather than by their peers. Verbal harassment was the most common type, and female trainees were significantly more likely than male trainees to report harassment (mainly sexual).(6)https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/04/07/patient-hid-recorder-in-her-hair-as-surgeons-operated-on-her-their-words-left-her-deeply-distressed/This is not the extreme deviant case. A lady patient went to the operation theater with the audio recorder hidden in her braided hair. After anesthetized, The audio reveals how the doctors trashed her based on their previous interactions.I hope even though they trashed her, They would not have done any physical harm.I find this interesting because this is the average woman, going to average hospital, to get treated by average doctors.Hey, Doctors are not saintly as they claim!!Another similar case herehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/local/anesthesiologist-trashes-sedated-patient-jury-orders-her-to-pay-500000/2015/06/23/cae05c00-18f3-11e5-ab92-c75ae6ab94b5_story.html?I see mentioning this here, is relevant to show that doctors have feelings just like you and me, be it sexual or others. But Mostly They won't show that in action. It is the blatant disgusting lie if they say there is nothing sexual about some of the clinical exams.(7)Medical community reflects on 'disgusting and scandalous' episodes in the operating roomThis highlights the minor harassment and remarks that happens in the clinical setting. In this case, A doctor sexually commenting while he prepares an anesthetised woman for vaginal hysterectomy. Another one's disgusting behaviour while he is massaging the uterus of a lady postpartum, to reduce bleeding. In another obscure news, I found that a doctor was condemned for his remarks during a presentation, with the audience mostly of women -doctors and patients. He was presenting about Breast cancer, It seems. A slide of the breast image in medical context, was shown. He commented, "This is pretty. But, You won't get this kind of breasts often. You will get mostly old saggy ones." He just spoke his mind voice. I lost track of the original paper. But, Will share the link as soon as I find. What does professionalism mean? It is what you say, despite that naughty mindvoice. But, The point is "mind voice is there".It is easy to neglect these as deviants. But The point is to note that the doctors are sexual being, for that matter emotional beings in general, like you and me. Whatever we know about human sexual behaviour, applies to them too.(8)For this, I think there is no need to give papers. It is well known the case regarding the relationship between Doctors and Drug Industries.Doctors may think they are high above the normal people. But, They are simply as deceivable by simple gifts, Drug industries throw at them. Now We have awareness and Many laws/regulations are there. But, It was rampant before. In one news, The drug industry arranged sex party for the doctors. They were caught with almost a dozen doctors of various fields, with prostitutes and HIV test kits.Caught On Camera: For Bribes, Doctors Will Prescribe You Anything(9)In India, Ragging in medical college was rampant few years before. Now It is mostly put under control with severe punishments and laws against them.In the ragging episodes, The newcomers were sometimes stripped naked or to underwear. Sometimes made to perform lewd dances. Sometimes made to read lewd statements aloud. You can find their experiences in the quora itself. It was mostly intended as fun for the senior Doctors. More or like the rites of passage.Does not this show they are humans prone to human errors? Does not this show they have all sorts of emotions? You may like to look at this paper - https://www.researchgate.net/publication/26671360_Ragging_A_public_health_problem_in_IndiaSome reasons given by students for ragging - As they were ragged by their seniors, so it’s their right to rag their juniors. - The crueler a senior is, more terrified are the juniors.!It took years to curtail this toxic culture. It is necessary to acknowledge their human nature, even to protect them from their own group!!I had a friend who in the junior college, used to make nasty double meaning, sexually laden comments. He was the jovial guy though. He was like any other normal man. He sometimes went on to ask others for adult magazines and DVDs. Those were the days without much internet. He had his own collection too. Among his many other comments, This one I can't forget, " She was such a beauty that I can suck the d**k that f**ked that p***y". Also, He told one of his poem, the most perverted perverted poem one can hear in the world. After Several years, You know what, He is a doctor. May be shocking to you! He is a Gynaecologist- the most popular doctor in the city. Ladies like him for the gentle care He provides. Should I tell them the poem, He wrote? If he now comes and says to me that there is nothing sexual about what he is doing, Should I accept him?Shall we collect data, going through the medical college confession pages in facebook, to prove those male students are like any other normal males? These are some personal anecdotes though. My Point again is that "There is nothing sexual about it" is the ONE BIG BLATANT LIE.(10)One has to just look at the prevalence of Obstetrics violence!'I can't take it anymore': Sights and awful sounds from the labour room of an Indian public hospitalChild birth: Govt doctors either leave women scarred or refuse careThis underground investigation just digs that with the case analysis of government hospital in Kolkata.Highlight:“The young doctor doesn’t remember the first time he slapped someone in the labour room. Everyone slaps patients, all his MBBS classmates did and the postgraduate students do, too. It is almost a rite of passage. “There was one guy, he was so shy. He never lost his cool. The day he slapped his first patient, that was an event. We made him treat us to biryani,” he chuckles.”Why do they indulge in Obstetrics violence? It can be peer pressure, work load, or simply they can get away with it. Junior residents tend to be given all the works by their seniors, more or like ragging. These things need to be analysed and what has to be done, must be done to stop these inhumane behaviours. The Point again is to note that they are not above normal people. If a doctor, due to circumstances or otherwise, who can indulge in obstetrics violence, Do You even think they will be saintly to not to enjoy the erotic rewards that come naturally while examining the attractive patients, unless they genuinely lost that capability to do so?The only difference between doctors and others, is they have the license to practice on you and me. They have that knowledge. And You know knowledge gives power. It does not make you saintly or anything.(11)Many talk about desensitisation. What exactly is desensitisation? For the desensitisation to occur, The stimulus which elicited the response, is given again and again to elicit the response, that after sometimes it fails to elicit such response.Suppose the stimulus is Visual Sexual Stimuli (VSS-nude images, breasts, genitals). For the desenstisation to occur:-- We must give the person unlimited supply of VSS for his excitement.- Make sure that he gets excited, to be sure that he is receiving the stimulus.- Gradually His excitement level may drop. The VSS may not be enough to elicit the response.- Continue till the VSS fails to evoke the sexual response.Even If we assume that this kind of desensitisation occurs, What does this exactly mean? How many patients to give him to get excited about, to become desensitised gradually? But Unfortunately, This may not happen. Even If it happens, It will be very temporary. (What about a week vacation?).There is something called Coolidge Effect Coolidge effect - WikipediaIn Humans, If We give the same VSS, the desensitisation occurs. But, If we change the picture - a new model/actress, VSS begins to give the same excitement as before. That means, A man may get desensitised to his own wife after some time. But When presented with the new novel female, His excitement becomes as fresh as at the beginning.Ever heard of Men/kings with many wives and concubines? Ever heard of some sultans and their harems?**update**:While browsing through the answers here, I came across a very funny comment:"By the time a 'Male' becomes a 'Gynaecologist’(At least 8 years of complete medical training), he has seen something like many thousands of Vaginas and as many Breasts, so don't expect him to get ‘turned-on'. He becomes kinda Robotic with these things.."This is like the warning for the women who want to marry the male gynaecologist! But, Don't worry, In Quora as well as in many other forums, Some Male Gynaecologists trumpet about their sexual prowess with their wives. Oh, We are again in to that "compartmentalisation" zone!Let me tell my hypothesis on what goes on. Men's testosterone level usually drops gradually after marriage. There is significant drop after the child birth. This reflects on their sex life too, some what lower libido than they have been in before. This is true for our average normal man. But, Research says, "The proximity and availability of the attractive novel females, increases the testosterone level in males". Male Gynaecologists with the occasional novel females, especially in the way They access them, may maintain their testosterone level, which can be the reason for their sexual libido/prowess with their own wives!!//he has seen something like many thousands of Vaginas and as many Breasts, so don't expect him to get ‘turned-on'.//Give a teenage boy the full internet connection for a week. He may have seen thousands of Vaginas and as many Breasts, by the end!!You may like to see this famous men who have thousands of sexual partners The famous men who have slept with THOUSANDS of women... but who's bedded the most? These people not only see or touch the attractive females. But, They actually have had sex with them. Should not we expect them to get turned-on again?(12)We can go and go on with many studies about humans and even about monkeys. In a paper called Monkey Pay per view, It is observed that Rhesus male monkeys trade tokens to view at the images of female rump (as well as the faces of high-status monkeys). Monkeys pay per view: adaptive valuation of social images by rhesus macaques - PubMedIt is very easy to see that humans too get erotic reward up on seeing the female form/breasts/genitals.You may like to see this paper:https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2008-10850-006The title is :-Voyeurism: It is good as long as we do not get caught!Let me highlight the point :- Participants reported a willingness to watch an attractive person undress if they would not be caught. Now Let us come to this question:- Human males masturbate often, on average atleast once or twice in a week.Do Male Gynaecologists masturbate? If you fantasise during masturbation, What do you think?Attractive lady? Her Breasts? Her Vagina?Have you ever fantasised about any of your patients, recollecting their organs?Oh, I can hear that compartmentalisation shit now!!(13)Whatever being talked here, was already presented in this beautiful essayby Eros ModesticaThe response to the same had been requested by someone, years back in 2017. No wonder It has no responses yet. What is the response to this essay on male gynecologists? This is a well researched essay regarding male gynecologists. Www.modestyxxx.com(14)Medical students rely on cadaver dissection for their training. For their training, The steady supply of cadavers is completely necessary. As They see the body as just a physical body, Can We expect more doctors actually doing body donation? It is easy to see that they should return the favour as they are the ones who dissect other's cadavers, gaining knowledge from it.Knowledge, attitude, and practices regarding whole body donation among medical professionals in a hospital in India - PubMedHighlights:8% of the medical professionals were unaware of the term body donation and 85% believed that donated bodies were misused.Only 22% of polled physicians were willing to donate their bodies for medical education, but 68% expected the public to do the same. While only 7% had already registered their own names for body donation, 64% were not aware of any known person having registered and 72% indicated that their decision would not be influenced even if they knew of friends who had registered.https://www.researchgate.net/publication/269521360_BODY_DONATION-_A_DILEMMA_AMONG_DOCTORSHighlight:It was observed that though doctors unanimously agree to the importance of dissection in anatomy teaching and understanding, they are themselves not keen on donating their bodies. It will be interesting to see the actual data on how many doctors do actually give body donation.Perhaps They may fear situations like this -Cadaver photos, lewd captions found in YSM yearbooksHighlight:Numerous photos published in these sections from the 1990s show students dissecting unobscured human donors. One depicts six smiling medical students surrounding a donor’s head. Another shows a female student holding a dissected hand and forearm captioned, “A hand job.” An additional photo shows a male student working over a donor’s torso with the caption, “Urologist at the wrong end of the body.”This is to again show they are just like you and me, with all feelings and cultural influences. They may deny their sexuality and It is completely expected. You may see themselves as idealistic. But, Hey, Wake up to the reality! There is nothing sexual about some clinical examinations, is rather a wish than the reality!(15)Consider this!Providers Are Sexually Assaulting Patients — and It’s LegalI think there is no need to prove the cases of non consensual pelvic exams by med students and doctors, on anesthetised patients. Here In Quora itself, Some doctors even vehemently defended that practice, saying that is just another organ for them- nothing sexual about it at all.Just think! The doctor who admitted his daughter for some ailment, will allow his students to practice on her, while she is anesthetised?—Dear People, Please dig in to the truth, rather than blindly believing anyone's words! Just because The male Gynaecologist assures you that there is nothing sexual about it, It doesn't mean that is the actual case. But I can attest that most of them won't violate you beyond what medical ethics allows. If you consider inserting fingers with gloves, is not violation and without gloves, is violation. Amen! Most will insert with gloves for sure! There are some comments which say, " I have no problem with what he thinks or even If he has erection, as long as They do their job correctly". These comments are realisitic. My Problem is only with the lies- blatant lies! After this much of arguments to prove the obvious, Doctors may agree, "Ok. It happens sometimes. We too get sexually attracted to patients sometimes". However I wonder what will be their answer to the masturbation question! Now, You are aware that you might get attracted to some patients in your career. You are aware of the nature of your profession. You are aware that you might have to see and touch the breasts/genitals of the patients you may get sexually attracted to. You are aware that you may have to deny that and may have to tell the blatant lie. You are aware that Many patients of you blindly believe your claims of asexuality.Having known all these, Why the heck did you choose this profession?I am not going to say that men should not be gynaecologists. But I say, Men or Women should not deceive people in to believing blatant lies. People should think deeper to know the truth. People should know the facts. With the facts and truth known to everyone, Let the dynamics decide your market position. To see the Big picture, I think this is what is happening Someone anonymous's answer to Do male gynecologists sometimes get turned on when an attractive woman visits for a checkup? Is there any harm in this denial?Yes! First only If We can understand the human nature, We can make the better angels of our nature. By denying, We are not going anywhere.Suppose A person has been abused by a reputable doctor. What the public and the doctors say - is worse than hell for the victim. I have heard about such victims. The public will say, “No way! He has delivered my 3 kids. He is a fatherly figure. This patient should be finding the way to make easy money!” and so and so on. The Doctors will say, “ It is easy for the public to misunderstand the clinical examination as sexual assault. They must be educated!”. They even add, “It is ridiculous. The doctor who has seen many many patients in his career, got tempted by this one patient! This patient should be properly investigated!”These are not some cooked up statements. But Taken from the real comments in news channels of the actual case.I am aware of a case where the entire village defended a good fatherly doctor against the poor victim despite the concrete proof of vaginal swab test!Is not this great harm?Whenever a society overlooks the normal human desires of some individuals, It gives enormous power to these individuals. And Power, You know -What it can do!**update**:Came across this golden nugget here in one of the answers:"Finally, lady folks, I understand that sometimes, it is quite uncomfortable to get yourself examined by male medical students, but try to understand that most of them have to attend the Obstetrics and Gynaecology clinics, which is mandatory and not optional. These guys are already apprehensive, so be friendly with them and cooperate with them, let them learn through you, so that tomorrow if you are in the middle of a flight and it's time for your baby to pop out, and when you are searching for a doctor, you are not disappointed to learn that he does not know how to conduct a successful delivery just because ladies refused to get examined during his training days."Dear Med Student, I understand your situation. I convince my sister regarding this, explaining all you have told. In future, If She is sick, She will come to the medical college and let you and your friends learn through her. You can do Pelvic Exams, Bi Manual Exams, Breast Palpation or whatever, one by one. She won't squeamish as She understands that there is nothing sexual about it at all. She may even consent to keep video record for the medical educational purposes.Hey, I have one easy suggestion though! My Sister is not the only one who has vagina, breasts and the reproductive system. Your sisters, wives, mothers, female colleagues and any female relatives - They too have vaginas and breasts! Moreover They too may find themselves popping baby in the middle of flight! Also, It will be easy to make them understand as for you people, there is nothing sexual about it. Hope you got it!NOTE:If we mention the deviant cases that capture media attention like high profile cases of Doctor rape, hidden camera cases, sexual assault complaints by multiple patients, They will be swiped under the rug saying that they are deviants and every profession has such deviants. So, I choose to not to mention them while concentrating on the widespread prevalent problems that can’t be denied as being done by few deviants, to indirectly give evidences to prove that there are sexual aspects to some clinical examinations. Yet The extreme deviant cases occur at such rate that we can perhaps even make “Doctor abuse case of the week” column?! This is despite the fact that sexual abuse in the clinical setting is incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to prove, unless the abuse is so extreme and explicitly hard to ignore like actual rape. To understand that, one can go through the legal proceeding of the famous cases in the law sites.-Why did you pinch the cheeks of that teenage girl? Just a friendly touch as she was so afraid. She was like My daughter.-Why did you remove her tops by yourself? When abdominal examination does not show any significant abnormality, We tend to move on to check the chest area. And She was just helped by the Doctor to remove the tops.-Why did you pinch her breasts? The Palpation was mistaken by the girl as pinch.-Why did you touch her genital areas, sliding the hand under the pants? The supra pubic palpation was mistaken by the patient.-Why did you address the patient as Baby, pinched her cheeks , made the relative to wait outside and proceeded without the nurse? That was the communication problem. Nurse was about to come. Doctor just proceeded casually. So, Finally It is the misunderstanding without proper communication, made the patient to perceive the clinical proceeding as sexual advance. Also Doctor can be given some more medical ethics training to train him in proper communication skills and to be careful with boundary maintenance. Moreover slight remarks/comments during the examinations won’t make the news. Because Many patients don’t have the awareness and also fear that they won’t be believed if she/he complaints. Moreover She/He will probably get chastised by other doctors as well as other patients.Even though This study has some limitations (Anonymous postal survey of Doctors themselves ,mostly Psychiatrists) , It is worth noting that hereIs there an elephant in the room? Boundary violations in the doctor-patient relationship in IndiaHighlights:-Many respondents (78%) had heard of physical examination of patients – and 59% had heard of physical examination of children – being done without an attendant, chaperone or guardian being present.-A third (33%) of respondents had heard of at least one allegation of SBV that was investigated but a larger number (51%) had heard of at least one allegation of SBV that was not investigated.-A substantial number of respondents (41%) felt NSBV were a concern, while about half (49%) felt that SBV were a concern in India.(NSBV-Non-Sexual Boundary Violation, SBV - Sexual Boundary Violation)-Media reports suggest that in the few cases of sexual abuse which find their way to court, the inquiry process is perceived to be as abusive as the original abuse. So, the reason why no one openly talks about doctor-patient abuse is not because it does not occur. Rather, talking about it can lead to adverse consequences to everyone who knows about it. This can lead to a false sense of security in which we feel that doctor-patient abuse is not an issue in India because we do not often hear of it.Thanks for reading!
