The most desirable parts of California are densely populated, and both Mother Nature and government regulation make further development challenging. This means that real estate supply is always outstripped by demand, and prices are high. Government has also decided on a “high tax, high benefit” model that places pressure on people who aren’t rich, as the prices on many necessities—including core items like food and fuel—in California are generally among the highest in the lower 48 United States. I think the big issue that California is facing is that even though the state is an incredible place, the question of whether you get your money’s worth is becoming increasingly difficult for people to answer in the affirmative.I’d be lying, for example, if I said that Houston (where I live now) is as beautiful or has as nice weather as San Francisco (which I left at the end of 2009). However, my overall quality of life in Houston is exponentially better than it was in the Bay, and I think that a lot of individuals and employers are realizing that there may be better deals to be had elsewhere.

I do not think so. The State of Illinois is in abysmal financial shape. I do not see that improving any time soon. Chicago schools are not good, many people are forced to send their kids to private schools. And within 10 years, Chicago will be as bankrupt as Detroit.And the weather is no attraction.
