All the methods discussed so far get arithmetically tedious very fast. I think you'd need at least a pocket calculator to do all the multi-digit multiplications and divisions. They're great methods for learning some fundamental math but not practical if you just have paper and pencil. For really manual calculation of square roots, use the modification of long division that was taught (at least to our class) in 6th grade.
