I was interviewed in London at the London Hilton on Park Lane.There was a wedding going on downstairs - a great backdrop for an hour that would change my life.For the 2+2, HBS was looking for strong early potential leaders in a variety of fields. I felt their focus was a lot more on understanding the path you have been on, the path you are planning to be on, and how legitimate your previous experiences were.Like most people, I prepared for all the big questions:What defines you as a person?Why do you work hard?Who is your role model?I even prepared for the weird questions:What are 3 books you would recommend?Who would you want to have dinner with?What is one thing about your life you would change?All these were questions I found on forums and guides that I prepared for.Instead, my interview consisted essentially of two questions:On line x of your CV:Why did you choose to do this?How did you do this?For every single activity I had written on my CV. We took 1 hour and 3 minutes.The only time we deviated from the script was when I was asked if I ‘definitely did not want to do law’, ‘why an MBA’ (which was a variation of the previous question), and the classic ‘Is there a question I should have asked?’I thought I could not have failed the interview harder than if the interviewer had hit me in the face.We didn’t talk about what I wanted to do in the future. We didn’t talk about my strengths or weaknesses. We didn’t talk about who my mentors and heroes were. I had a great story about Elon Musk and Philip Yeo prepared.I called a friend to commiserate, and stuffed myself with comfort food.
