Many battlefield situations are extremely dangerous and serve no strategic purpose at all. Going where it hurts, however, is a soldier’s job.Fortunately, ‘suicidal order’ situations with almost zero chance of survival almost exclusively occur in (bad) Hollywood movies and maybe some cheap novels. There are a few reasons why “refusing a suicidal order’ is so unrealistic:Most orders on the battlefield are quite reasonable. Nowadays, most armies work with so-called “mission command” tactics meaning that they tell you what you have to do (in a broad outline) but not exactly how. Modern armed forces heavily rely on their soldiers' and small unit leaders’ abilities to properly judge a situation and take the right steps. If someone screws up on the battlefield, it's probably you and not some high-ranking officer in the ‘hinterland’.You can’t really know how dangerous your mission will be. You think it's a suicide mission but when you get there, it turns out to be a walk in the park. The next time, it's the other way around: a harmless routine mission develops into a fierce and deadly battle.Last but not least, no officer willingly sends you into a situation where you have absolutely no chance to survive. These ‘cannon fodder’ stories are from another time and age; in today's wars, a soldier's life is very precious.In the (rare) case that you'll be indeed sent on such a mission, you can always refuse the order. You'll probably be court-martialed, jailed, and then kicked out of the army, but this is still much better than being shot to death on the battlefield.

I'll explain. Normally this question upsets me, because it has been answered ad nauseum. But I'm in a pretty good mood, so I'll explain again why as a free man, and an American, I will NEVER accept a gun registry, nor will I register my guns.There is no benefit to anyone by creating a gun registry EXCEPT to the government. If they know where every single gun is, then they can CONFISCATE THEM if they choose.However, they won't know where every single gun is because criminals won't register their guns, and I will be transformed into a felon overnight by refusing to register my guns. Mind you, I am not going to commit any crimes other than not registering my gun.Then if and when I am forced to use my gun in self-defense, the ensuing investigation will find my unregistered gun, and through no fault of my own, I will be imprisoned for possessing an unregistered gun.I have a RIGHT to own firearms; any firearm I choose. The 2nd Amendment DOES NOT SAY “shall not be infringed EXCEPT FOR AR-15s, AK- 47s, automatic weapons, 30-round magazines,” etc. It says that the RIGHT to keep and bear arms SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.Now you're probably going to say, “What about the part that talks about the militia?” Of course you are. Thus I am forced to explain (again) that the part of the 2nd Amendment which says “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state..” is called.the PREFATORY CLAUSE. The prefatory clause explains WHY the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.In 1791, when the 2nd Amendment was ratified, the phrase “well-regulated” was understood by every English-speaking person to mean, “well-trained,” “well-equipped,” or “in proper working order, for example.a “well-trained soldier,” or a well-equipped soldier, or a “well-regulated clock,” which is a clock that is in proper working order.The author of the 2nd Amendment, James Madison himself, stated that the militia included ALL people. That means that it isn't merely a group of men who form an informal army, but anyone capable of being asked to use a firearm to defend the nation. This person would be expected to own his own firearm and be proficient and knowledgeable in its use.So, if I have a right to own a firearm, how does requiring me to tell the government that I own a firearm NOT an infringement of this right?I can own any gun I choose. The regulations and laws that have been passed concerning the possession of firearms, magazines, bumpstocks, features on firearms, etc. are ALL UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Requiring me to have a license to carry a firearm is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Telling me how many rounds my firearm can hold in its magazine is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Telling me I cannot own an automatic weapon without a special tax and background check is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Telling me I cannot own a suppressor without a special tax and background check is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Telling me WHERE I CAN AND CANNOT carry my firearm (with the exception of private property) is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Requiring me to get a background check before purchasing a firearm is UNCONSTITUTIONAL.All gun control and regulation is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. That is what is wrong with a gun registry. It is absurd.

An oft repeated joke at Staff College (DSSC Wellington) was that the Army works the hardest, followed by the Air Force, the childrens’ school and the Navy in that order. (Heaven is the Navy’s postings, the Air Force’s work culture and the Army's organisation. Hell is the Army's postings, the Navy's work culture and the Air Force’s organisation.)During the course at DSSC, the Navy and Air Force students are taken on a Forward Area Tour to see how the army operates. Even though it was in May (the best timeof the year) most of us said to ourselves “Thank God I didn't opt for the Army.” Later the whole course goes on an industrial Tour visiting various training centres to see artillery, armour and flying demos amongst others. One event is a day at sea with the Navy. Usually, the weather in/off Bombay (Mumbai) after the monsoon is good. The year I did the course, the monsoon hadn't retreated and it was pouring with rough seas . Most of the Army and Air Force students were miserably seasick. When we returned to Port and disembarked the general refrain was “You Navy guys can have your sea. We're happy to operate on dry land.” This is the reverse of “The grass is greener on the other side”.Now decide for yourself.
