There are extreme positions. While they are revered as gods by some, they are demonized by others. While they are overrated when treatment is given or before the bill is delivered, they are undermined if the treatment is unsuccessful (with no fault of theirs) or when they are asked to pay the bill.A few points to ponder upon:1) Fixed working hours do not apply for doctors. Nor do national holidays, weekends, religious holidays apply to them.2) An engineer, industrial worker can refuse to work if he is not satisfied with the working conditions. But a doctor has to work in one of the most pathetic working conditions in the oddest of hours while not being paid their salaries or stipends for more than 6 months.3) For each MBBS seat roughly 20 students compete. Later for every PG seat, 5 doctors compete. And then there is the task of superspecialisation. A super-specialist is trained on the whole for 12-15 years and comes out for practice at an average age of 33 years.4) For every post of a doctor in PHC roughly 3 doctors have applied (AP and Telangana) but still government says doctors are not prepared to work in rural areas.5) Courts ask doctors to treat patients for free in cases of accidents and acid attacks, but doctors have to pay heavy prices for lawyers in medico-legal cases.6) I have read 3 incidents reported on fb where doctors did not leave the patients unattended but continued with the surgery while all others including the patients' own relatives ran out to protect themselves.This Nepal doc didn't leave patient on operation table after quake8) Dr. Sanjay Gupta performed neurosurgeries with saw and other such equipment where no sterilized equipment was available in the post earthquake Nepal. And remember he was not there as a surgeon but as a reporter.9) Dr. Deepak Shrestha had done 36 surgeries in 1 day after the Nepal earthquake. Cardiothoracic surgeons are known to operate continuously for more than 12 hours.And this is what doctors get back:1) The patients are reluctant to pay the fees of a doctor (200 Rs) but would happily buy popcorn for 50 Rs in a multiplex which is not worth 5 Rs. The doctors are expected to move about in cars and stay in big houses but not to charge fees.2) One fb post by a person said that engineers could do MBBS in 15 days. All that doctors do is prescribe paracetamol, antibiotic and rantac. We too wish it were that simple.3) The increasing attacks on doctors by the relatives of the patents, the politicians, local goons, police and even media not to speak about the attacks on lady doctors who need to work at odd hours.Relatives attack doctor for not injecting patient | The Asian Age4) More than 40,000 doctors are jobless in India and 'being doctors' cannot move to another profession. Government does not support the doctors who try to run clinics in rural areas which remain unviable for various reasons.5) The numerous laws and regulations that govern the doctors and the various permissions and licences required to open clinics (atleast 10 for opening a simple clinic forget about a larger hospital)6) News channels report that some medical tests cost less than 5 Rupees. I think that they should really open diagnostic centres at that prices. I would refer all my patients to them and also work for free for them if they can really provide the services at those costs.
