Our city is offering a rent assistance grant and our landlord said ‘it had tax implications they weren’t willing to risk’I don't understand what that's supposed to mean. Generally, rent assistance is made to the tenant. The simple tax implications to the landlord are the same. But nothing else is described about that, so nothing else can be said.If a landlord doesn't want to accept the rent being offered on one's behalf, they are refusing rent. It would really make no sense to refuse rent and then send an eviction notice. Unless the city had some unusual strings attached to their program, but I know of no such thing.So it sounds like there is more to the story.(Please do not post more information in the comments; I will ignore that.)also said if I couldn’t pay rent they would send a 60 day vacate notice. These attempts are often illegal themselves. Instead, some states try to just slow down the evictions within the court system. It can discourage landlords from even filing for eviction. Which is a temporary measure at best.Because you state no jurisdiction, no one can tell the situation in that place.If one rents, the rent will inevitably become due. For a "month-to month" tenancy, all that is required is 30 days' notice to terminate the lease.It does not matter how long the tenant was in occupancy, nor does it matter whether the tenant believes that 30 days is "reasonable," since the law establishes 30 days as a reasonable time for a tenant to vacate after receiving notice.
