As a nurse, did any of your co-workers get an accidental dirty needle stick?

It was a very dear friend of mine named (Ann) not her real name. She was an RN working triage in the ED of a very large Massachusetts hospital that she had been at for over 25 years. She was very proficient in starting IVs so, when a colleague was having trouble, she went into the ED to help her out. She inserted the IV without difficulty but when she went to discard the needle she was stuck by an improperly discarded needle that was sticking up from the box.Needle sticks are not uncommon but, unfortunately, many do go unreported. Her coworker reminded her of the policy to report all sticks and if Ann didn’t report it she would so reluctantly Ann made the official report. To try to make a very long story short, she had all the testing required and waited for the results. The testing was done in stages so she had to be retested in a few weeks to months. At the three month mark she was called into Employee Health. When she entered the room, her heart sank: there were several people waiting for her. The NP from Employee Health, the head of the ED, an infection control specialist, and the nursing director. The results were catastrophic: Hepatitis C and HIV - both positive. What happens when your world turns upside down in an instant and your 26-year career comes to a screeching halt? She took this disease on like a warrior and went to the state and federal government to pass a bill that would mandate needle-free systems in our hospitals. No healthcare worker should ever have to walk the path the she did with passage of this bill. With the help of then Senator Ted Kennedy, this bill was passed in one year - start to finish. She was invited into President Clinton’s office the day he signed it into law.I am delighted to tell you this happened over 20 years ago and, in that time, this amazingly courageous woman has beat Hep C and her HIV is no longer measurable in her blood.Ann has gone on to lecture around the world to promote needle-free systems. She will always be a hero to healthcare workers everywhere and I get the privilege to call her my friend….I am glad you asked. It's important to me that people understand what I mean. I found this statement from one of the manufacturers:Needleless I.V. systems are defined as systems that administer medications through an I.V. access device without using needle connections. Needleless I.V. systems have been used in infusion therapy procedures since 1991.(Above) The end of the IV with the blue tip is now accessed with just a syringe without the needle see below. This is only part of a needleless system. Many sticks came from taking the cap off the needle and then replacing it after the med was administered. The confusion Marcus Broberg had when he had an IV started was more of the instrument used to insert it. There is a needle in the center of this flexible IV catheter. I would doubt the patient would even notice that after the line is inserted the nurse would push the #8 button and the needle would retract and is automatically covered to avoid the stick that Ann suffered all those years ago, regardless of how the instrument was discarded.I apologize for the length of this response. But I have always believed that a picture speaks a thousand words.Be well all, stay safe.

What was it that surprised you the most about your new neighbors?

PI have shared this before. I used to live in a apartment complex after my Mom and Dad got a divorce. The best thing about the complex was the pool. I loved swimming. I would be there sometimes an hour before it would open just waiting.Often there would be a old man sitting alone on his back porch that was close to the pool area. Since I had to wait, and he looked like he could use my company I would go over and talk to him. He was a very nice old man, I could tell he enjoyed our talks. It became a date of sorts everymorning I would be sure to get up there early and sit and talk to the old man while I waited until the pool opened. He sometimes would have Nutter Butter cookies waiting for me, those sandwich cookies that were shaped like a peanut and had a peanut butter center.Early on in our visits I noticed the man had a tattoo with numberrs on one of his fore arms, and I asked about it. I was only about ten… He asked me if we had been taught in school about the Holocaust? I didn’t know a lot about it but we had read The Diary of Anne Frank in class so I wasn’t completely oblivious to it. He told me how he was a prisoner in the concentration camps like Anne Frank was. He talked to me a little bit about it in a way a ten your old could understand. Honestly at the time I didn’t really appreciate him as a holocaust survivor like I would today. To me he was just my very good friend that kept company with me while I waited for the pool to open, and sometimes we would share cookies and milk. We only talked about his time as a prisoner or about the holocaust that one time.He moved away before the pool opened the next year. Day one that the pool opened up I got there bright and early like always carrying my towel. I didn’t know if I was going to see my friend or not. He wasn’t on his porch and he must have moved away just a week or so before because when I looked in the back sliding glass door the apartment was empty and clean, it hadn’t been rented out by anyone yet.It was a little deflating and I was bummed. I looked forward to seeing him again. I remember feeling empty, just like the apartment. I was pretty lucky to have met him. I still remember him as a dear friend.

How innocent was Anne Boleyn?

I believe she was totally innocent of committing adultery while married to Henry VIII. She was a prolific flirt of course, as was Henry, but she never overstepped the mark. She was an extremely intelligent woman, and she knew how dangerous it would be for her, if she took a lover/s. Not only would Henry be enraged with jealousy and find himself a cuckold, she would be risking her life, plus the lives of her lover/s, her daughter Elizabeth’s future, and put the parentage of any other children they could have, into question. The whole plot was hatched by Thomas Cromwell in order to free Henry of this supposedly shameful marriage, so that he could launch himself at Anne’s polar opposite - Jane Seymour. Previous to this, there had never been any rumours of Anne having an affair of any kind. When younger, she fell in love with Harry Percy of Northumberland, but they were parted by Cardinal Wolsey, and she also had a great friend in Thomas Wyatt, in later years. It’s also beyond belief that she would commit adultery with men she knew to be close to the King, including her own dearly beloved brother, George. The final insult is really laughable - she, the Queen was charged with having sexual intercourse with a lowly court musician, Mark Smeaton, the only one who ‘confessed,’ probably out of terror and horrendous pain during torture.Cromwell convinced Henry because Henry WANTED to be convinced. He had fallen out of love with Anne, and into love with Jane Seymour, believing that she at last, would provide him with the long-awaited male heir that neither of his previous wives could supply. He sacrificed any feelings he had left for Anne, and helped to murder some of his best friends he’d known since boyhood. He was also prepared to make his and Anne’s daughter, Elizabeth, another bastard, as he had done to his other daughter, Mary. Cromwell had indeed unleashed the very worst of Henry’s now ferocious, nasty, vengeful and petty rages. Henry had discovered that he had absolute power and could destroy anyone who stood in his way! Anne was a fighter and stood her ground as best she could, but from start to finish, she never had a chance!!
