Back in the day when the internet became something other than a means of communications between the military (Arpanet) and educational and scientific establishments, there were only a couple of players in the market. Compuserve and AOL. These companies used their own proprietary software and browsers and because the intenet itself was very primitive and mostly text based they added their own custom content and features and had hosted and moderated chat rooms. This was in the days where the AOL software (V2.5) came on a single floppy disk and could be installed on a Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 machine.Microsoft Internet Explorer was only just beginning to appear and Microsoft attempted to create their own version of AOL/Compuserve and called it MSN.When the internet really caught on (late 90’s) and higher speed access (cable, DSL) became more common in the early 2000’s, a lot of other technology companies jumped onto the internet gravy train. At this time the internet and WWW and HTML was maturing, so it became possible to access the internet through other providers using ‘standard’ browsers like IE or Netscape Navigator.AOL and Compuserve both had proprietary email clients built in, but Microsoft developed Outlook for corporate mail communications as part of Office. They soon released Outlook Express as a basic mail client which they then rolled out as part of the OS with Windows 98. Thus, we now had a set of common protocols and standards (POP3, IMAP, SMTP. HTTP) which meant the internet no longer ‘belonged’ to the two original players and their own non-standard proprietary protocols.I started on the internet back in 1994 with AOL UK, and often used the chat rooms…but as standards developed and other software came along, they were soon left for dead.In much the same way as the thermionic valve is now all but obsolete, as new and better technology comes along and more players adopt common standards, the older ‘stick in the mud’ proprietary stuff will usually end up falling behind and eventually end up consigned to history.
