I spent three days at Fort Polk on TDY. Until those three days, I thought the most tedious, terrible time I ever spent in the Army was my week at reception before starting basic.Looking over my orders a few days prior, I walked over to the accounting section at HHQ. “Staff sergeant, I think there’s been a mistake. I’m only getting $1.60 per diem to cover meals, but there’s no DFAC on here.” (So, $4.80 to eat on for 3 days — at that time, depending on the base, that might cover 1 day of meals at an on-post dining facility.)Staff Sgt. X just threw her head back, laughed a deep, ominous laugh, and walked away.Fort Polk is the mother of all training bases (NTC is bigger, but she was the first), and like any stateside Army base focused on training, it’s a honey trap. You drive on post for TDY, you’re stuck there. Everything is designed to keep you from sneaking off too Leesville, which in retrospect is probably a good idea.So, why was my per diem so low? I got my first clue from the reception desk at the BEQ. “At 1600, walk over to the E club and show your orders to Earl.”I followed these cryptic instructions and walked over to a run-down building, identified only by a number, where sure enough one person, Earl*, sat at one of the five folding card tables, picking his teeth. He looked at my orders and said in a hard-to-hear drawl, “Dinner’s at 1830, breakfast from zero-six to oh-seven, you eat lunch out in the field.”And that was it. Earl was the sole operator of the E club on this side of Fort Polk. He made dinner each night: fried catfish, fried french fries, fried okra, fried everything. At 8:00 p.m. he opened a big boat cooler and sold $1 beers. When I showed up again at 6:15 a.m., there was Earl, serving out rubbery scrambled eggs and limp pancakes.Earl and his cooking was pretty much the highlight of my brief TDY. My other impressions of the JRTC, when I wasn’t out taking photos of our reservists and their trucks, were of bone-tired grunts, caked in mud, slumped on benches near the PX. The United States lacks research and development in advanced anti-ship weapons and had to rely on legacy technology of the Harpoon series. DARPA/Lockheed Martin’s AGM-158C LRASM is the future US anti-ship missile developed to take out high value shipborne surface threats such as aircraft carriers and other capital ships. It is powered by a modified Mk 114 jettison-able rocket boosters giving it an estimated range of 560km for the ship-launched version; and 903km for the air-launch version, both of which are substantially much longer range than the Harpoon series SSM.[1][1][1][1] Lockheed Martin video : Long Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM)[2][2][2][2] Surface Launch LRASM FlightIn order to be effective anti-ship weapon, it need to be able to penetrate layered defence put up by the adversary, such as the Chinese Navy’s 5-tiered defence mechanism as follows :The outermost combat air patrol layer of the Chinese carrier battle group will be carried out by the J-15 fighter jets armed with PL-12 AAM capable to taking out the AGM-158C’s air platform such as the F/A-18E Hornet or the B-1B Lancer bomber at a range of ~500km(430km CAP and 70km AAM range). The versatile J-15 can also carry the antiship YJ-83K missile to take out enemy warships 200km away. Coupled with the J-15’s 450km combat radius, it will give the Chinese carrier battle group an estimated standoff of 600–700km.The second layer of defence which the AGM-158C has to contend with are the air defence warships such as the 052D and 052C destroyers which are armed with HHQ-9 long range SAMs capable of hitting aircraft and missiles 200km away, guided by the world’s first operational Naval AESA type 346A radar(052C)with a 400km search range and 346B radar(052D) with 500km search range. Both versions of the Chinese naval AESA possess 100+ target tracking capabilities. To avoid interception, the LRASM will need to fly towards its target at medium altitude then drop to low altitude for a sea skimming approach to counter HHQ-9 anti-missile defenses.If the AGM-158C managed to penetrate the outer air defence layer, it will now face the third layer guarded by escorting 054 frigates armed with HHQ-16 SAMs enshrouding the 20km radius.
