Your internship also depends on which year of BTech you are in, so yeah, let's start.Well let's begin with research internships.Now if you're in first year BTech, forget about foreign internship and concentrate on somewhere near your home. Well, for me IIT Powai was the nearest so I decided to do an internship there. Choose a topic of your interest, do basic research on it and make a list of professors who work in that field and just shoot a mail to the professor. I am pretty sure he'll reply to you.For second year BTech students, this is a good period to undergo foreign research internships. But they are highly competitive and you'll get selected only and only if you have got extensive research experience in your first year. Speaking from experience, I myself underwent a year long internship and still feel my application is very weak. In my experience in finding internship in Bay area you should typically focus on following aspects:1. Building a good portfolio of relevant projects, beyond your regular academic projects. Try to learn new language, framework that you find interesting and learn all the internals and see what kind of problems you can solve and interesting applications you can build using it. Github is your friend in this regard, use it to share interesting projects that you build.2. Keep your basics in data structures, algorithms fresh by practicing to code all of those data structures from ground up,this will help you to sail through technical interviews both telephonic and onsite.
