PDF Editor FAQ

Are you still using a pen and paper despite the availability of the iPad Pro and the Apple Pencil?

Yes. For multiple reasons.1: It's cheap. Seriously cheap.2: It's really easy to use. All it requires is a pen and paper. And the ability to write of course. That's the same number of components as the Apple Pencil and iPad Pro for a fraction of the price. (With fewer components to go wrong or screw up.) Even if you take into account the number of sheets of paper that a person will use, it's unlikely that I will use enough paper (or pens) to justify the cost.3: I can tear out sheets of paper and give them to other people. No need for any connection. Or comparable devices.4: A pen is more flexible. Need to sign something? (Especially paper records) A pen works just fine. Apple Pencil? Less so.5: More environmentally friendly. Yes I know that paper is made of trees, but those are easily replaced. An iPad requires metals that have to be mined (a far less environmentally friendly process) And paper is far easier to recycle than the components of an iPad or Apple Pencil.6: I don't want to carry an iPad around with me all the time. I don't even have a smartphone yet.7: No battery life. At all. Paper has no battery life to worry about at all and pens only need ink and to work.8: Pens are ubiquitous. If my pen fails or I forget it, it's easy to borrow another. And because they're so cheap, people are more likely to lend them to me.Ultimately an Apple Pencil has it's place in the world. As do iPads. But so does pen and paper.

What’s the fastest you’ve wiped a smirk off of someone’s face?

This is actually one of my favorite “time to grow up” moves I do as a teacher. Within the first few days of school every year, I give a writing assignment to my students. I explain the writing prompt and the expectations, that I give them 20 minutes to write. One of the expectations is that they will fill an entire sheet.I always know ahead of time who the class clown and excuse-makers are. Every single time I do this assignment, a handful of them just talk the whole time they’re supposed to be writing. I don’t correct them. I pretend like I don’t notice. Then, when the 20 minutes is over, I collect their papers. When I see that they’ve barely written anything, I ask them to explain themselves. The excuses are always the same: I didn’t know what to write about, or I ran out of time. I ask if they had listened when I explained the assignment, and if they used their time wisely. Of course they always say that they did. It’s not their fault that they couldn’t finish the assignment, you see.I give them a chance to tell the truth, one more time… that they were talking when I explained what to do, and then kept talking to their friends during the writing time, and that’s why they didn’t finish the assignment. They never take that second chance. They’re usually smirking and laughing at this point, thinking that they’re getting away with the same thing they got away with in the lower grades: minimum effort, making a joke of everything, and lying to their teachers about it.Then, without speaking, I turn on the projector. Once it warms up, they see themselves on the screen. Themselves at the beginning of class. And just like that, their smirks disappear. Before I explained the assignment, I aimed my iPad at the class and set it to take a time-lapse. (Before you comment… yes, I’m allowed to do that. I’ve always taught at private schools, and one of the many papers parents sign before their children begin school is a “permission to record” sheet. And it’s not a hidden recording. My iPad was out there in the open the whole time.)I have the entire class watch the time-lapse video, so we can see who was listening to me as I explained the assignment, and who used their time wisely afterwards. Then we compare their results to the students who were chatting with their friends when I explained the assignment, and continued to do so when it was time to work. Then I go all fatherly/coach-like on them and just say how disappointed I am in their lack of effort AND their lying to me about it, because I know they can do better, and I expect better from them in the future.I know, it’s kind of a dick move, but it works wonders. Those class clown/excuse-making kids are actually pretty smart and do amazing work after that. They just needed a little “time to take things seriously” jolt.It also helps establish classroom “alpha dog” status for me, which makes all the difference when it comes to student behavior throughout the year. My principals have even noticed that the students always go way easier on me than they do most of my coworkers. It’s because the students respect me, that’s all. The whole “let’s look at the video and see what really happened” thing is just one of a few things I do in the first week of school to cement that “alpha” status. That status is one of the most under-appreciated things in teaching. It’s probably the reason I haven’t already quit teaching like some of my earlier coworkers. They got so tired of fighting with the students every day throughout the year. Me? I go for the knockout in the first round. Much, much easier that way.

To what extent should the Catholic Church modernise itself in order to survive?

The Catholic Church has modernized in countless ways. Here are a handful of examples you’ll see at my parish, a very typical local church in Brooklyn:At Mass, the priest and deacon(s) use wireless remote microphones. One of the priests in residence drives a hybrid car.All signing-up for the various ministries is done online. The Music Ministry uses a web service (and an accompanying app) that handles all scheduling, contains links to audio versions of the songs, along with links to sheet music (where applicable). While I’m kind of old school and print out my music and put it in a binder, the other guitarist uses his iPad and turns pages or moves on to the next song with a simple swipe. We have a modern, high-tech sound system that is controlled via an iPad app.Sunday Mass is available for those who cannot make it to church on TV, online, and via streaming.I recognize this question is likely asking about ways that the Catholic Church can become more “in tune” with modern society. And, like most questions of this type, that means things like allowing priests to marry, letting women become priests, relaxing proscriptions on abortion, birth control, and extra-marital sex, and endorsing same-sex marriage, and the like. Were the Catholic Church to do this, it would do nothing to help it “survive,” and it would achieve the exact opposite: Spell its quick demise. On top of that, if the Church would introduce these “innovations,” it would become exactly like many already existing Protestant denominations.
