PDF Editor FAQ
Are drill instructors ever nice?
One of the recruits in my platoon was an orphan. During mail call we were all very pleased to receive mail and this guy starts to cry. He simply had no one to write him. One of the Drill Instructors saw him crying and asked what was going on. The Drill Instructor was moved. The ladies of the Drill Instructor’s church all started writing him. He got a card or a letter each mail call for the rest of basic training. They are men with normal human emotions. They have a job to do. Break civilians and mold them into Marines.
Has anyone ever punched their drill sergeant?
Benjamin did and accomplished something no recruit had done before. It was explained to me that a drill sergeant and a drill instructor are two different things. A drill sergeant is a position that is kept for a longer period of time whereas a drill instructor is a temporary assignment reserved for training Marines. Due to the physical and mental stress you can't be a drill instructor for a long time. This is important because drill instructors will push much harder and are generally less experienced.I know a young man that graduated high-school and promptly enlisted in the Marines. Benjamin could track a deer through a forest in a rainstorm and was a gifted outdoorsman. He excelled at everything he did. He was born to be a Marine. Highest marks on his ASVAB test too.His performance continued in the Marine Boot camp. Expert level on his first marksmanship test. First or second in every physical challenge. (Merrall was also a freak of nature and provided a serious physical adversary) But the strongest part of Benjamin is his heart. He would protect anybody even at great personal peril. He was told that the instructors could not touch the recruits. One DI was particularly brutal and didn't get the note about not touching the recruits. So Benjamin does what he always does, he came to another recruit’s aid. We didn't get all the details but we were told that it was not done in anger. Decked him solid is what we were told. He was up on a disciplinary hearing but was allowed to continue due to the circumstances. On graduation day his mom and I talked to the senior drill instructor who told us, “Benjamin is not the first recruit to punch an instructor but he is the first to punch a drill instructor, and still get a meritorious promotion to PFC at boot camp.”That's Benjamin.Update: I highly recommend NOT to hit a superior officer. Very rarely turns out this way. Yes, this is 100% true. He replied below, “Marines are a lot like hot dogs. Everybody loves them but nobody wants to know how they are made.”
As a police officer, have you ever pulled over a student driver while they were with an instructor? In what ways is it different than a normal traffic stop?
“As a police officer, have you ever pulled over a student driver while they were with an instructor?”Yes, I’ve pulled a student driver over with his instructor in the car.The student driver (who was an international student from the local Major University) had never driven before starting his lessons. He went through a flashing red light at an intersection without stopping. When I pulled him over, he began arguing with me about the stop, saying he never saw the flashing red lights at the intersection. I asked the driving instructor if he noticed the lights at the intersection and he said something like, “I was telling him, ‘Red lights! Red lights!’”The driver continued to argue and started yelling when I told him I was going to cite him for the violation. The driving instructor told me that he would be driving the student back to their office immediately after the stop and I told them to go ahead and switch places while I went back to my squad car. While I was writing the citation, I could hear the student yelling at the instructor. A few moments later, the student got out of the car and walked around to the passenger side, but didn’t get in. The instructor moved over to the driver’s seat. When I returned with the citation, the student continued to be argumentative, but eventually took his copies of the citation. I told him he was free to go and started walking back to my car, but turned around when I heard the student yelling. The driving instructor had pulled away and left the student standing on the sidewalk. He came back to me, telling me I had to take him back to his apartment.I also left him standing on the sidewalk.“In what ways is it different than a normal traffic stop?”The major difference was that the driving instructor was able to confirm what I had seen, even though the student driver wouldn’t accept that he was wrong. The second major difference was that the instructor was able to drive the car away. And, finally, the student driver probably wasn’t going to get anyone else in the area to teach him how to drive. The driving schools shared information on “problem students” and the guy was probably blacklisted from that point.
