What is the dirtiest fine print you've seen in a contract?We purchased a new IBM Series 1 computer and hardware and software for time and attendance and to allow employees to clock in according to what manufacturing line they were working on. Different lines paid different premiums.The vendor included a clause that stated that we understood that if we did not pay their maintenance bill on time, that the application would stop working. I protested, but was overridden by my manager and the contract was signed. This is basically a time bomb. If we don’t pay the bill, we can’t use the system. Sounds reasonable to many people. I did manage to make sure that they kept all the source code on the computer.Well, the company went bankrupt and all the employees vanished off the face of the known world - right after we paid the annual maintenance. Two weeks later, the system died leaving an ominous message on the console, “Pay the maintenance!”.We called the vendor only to find out they didn’t exist anymore. We went to recompile the code and take out the time bomb only to find that we had multiple copies of every piece of source code - sometimes 10–15 copies. Every copy had the same date and time stamp.We didn’t know which piece of source code matched the executable file and didn’t know which module or modules were triggering the shutdown. It took 4 days to figure it out by recompiling each source module and comparing it to the executable, then looking in that source module to remove the time bomb.I wished I could have found the guy who sold it to us! JavaScript is as easy or as hard as you make it - it's relatively popular to say "go look at source code of websites you like and learn from that", but that advice is a little out of date in these days of massive JS applications (it used to be that many sites only had tens of lines of JS).To make it easier, you need to find a smaller chunk to bite off and investigate. Given that you already have HTML/CSS knowledge, you might want to start by considering small (and fun) expansions to your current sites and projects - the below might be a little cheesy, but they're how many oldschool JS programmers started:Making it so that clicking on something shows or hides something on the page (this tells you about onclick and interaction with CSS)Adding a clock to the corner of your page (this teaches you about timeouts/intervals and changing HTML content)Making something on your page follow the mouse (mouse events and CSS positioning)Drawing something with canvas (find some canvas tutorials)Fetching something from your server and displaying it on the page (XMLHTTPRequest)All of the above should be doable in less than 20 lines each (some much less), and should teach you about the idea of the page as a tree of nodes that you interact with. None of the above depend on knowing about JS's more advanced features (OO, closures), but can be made better once you understand them.Another way to learn is to take the source code of something a little more complicated that already works, and then begin modifying it to do what you want, little by little - much of this will just be changing numbers and variables around to see what happens, but as you do that the code will stop being a wall of indecipherable text, and you'll start to see how everything fits together.
