What are the main differences between stock Android and CyanogenMod?

Let us first understand what Stock ROM and Cyanogenmod ROM actually are.AOSP Android or stock ROM:AOSP stands for Android Open Source Project.Stock Android is what Google provides in their Nexus devices.Stock ROM on the other hand is when Google releases source code for the latest android OS and mobile companies take this standard source code released by Google and then port it to work on various devices by integrating some device specific drivers and software into the standard source code. Some companies even apply a particular skin on this stock ROM for device specific and company specific features. For eg. Samsung uses Touchwiz UI and sony uses Timescape UI.That's the reason why android looks different on various phones. Stock ROM does not provide root access to the users. As stock ROM is intended to be used by mainstream users who are not well versed with the Android ecosystem. If they would be provided with root access, the actions by such users may prove to be harmful for the device due to lack of knowledge. No root access results in limited functionality for stock ROM .This is how android looks like on Samsung Galaxy devicesThis is how android looks on Sony xperia devices.Cyanogenmod :This is what Cyanogenmod interface looks like .First thing ,I would like to make it clear that Cyanogenmod is based on android platform itself. The website definition isCyanogenMod (pronounced /saɪ.'æn.oʊ.dʒɛn.mɒd/) is an enhanced open source firmware distribution for smartphones and tablet computers based on the Android mobile operating system. It offers features and options not found in the official firmware distributed by vendors of these devices.when Google releases the source code of a particular OS, that code is used by a very large community of independent developers called the Cyanogenmod community for device specific development. The developers of the Cyanogenmod community take that code and port it to work on various devices. Thus the OS which is released by the community is called Cyanogenmod ROM . It has enhanced set of features that are not found in stock ROM and thus it makes the best possible use of your device hardware.Anyone who is interested in Cyanogenmod must visit it's website. You can even make a Cyanogenmod of your own with some experience!.The main difference between Cyanogenmod and AOSP ROM are1.Cyanogenmod provides inbuilt root supportThus enhanced features such as ad blocking, over clocking and under clocking of CPU,moving apps to external memory and many more are possible.2. Minimum bloatwareCompany specific bloatware or useless apps which are provided by the company by default are not present in Cyanogenmod.3.Availability of various themes and skinCyanogenmod supports themes engine which enables application of a large variety of themes which is not possible on stock android.4. Enhanced securityCyanogenmod is designed with highest security norms. Thus a phone having official cyaogrenmod is more secure than normal android. One such important feature is permissions manager and encryption in CM. Although mainstream android has started including them lately.5.Speed and performancePerhaps one major reason why you should shift to CyanogenMod is the improvement in performance. CyanogenMod is based on stock Android itself. There are no OEM skins running on top of it, which take up precious resources. Thus, you end up freeing additional resources which help in improving performance6. Latest version of AndroidYou can also use the latest version of Android within days of the update being pushed by Google. As soon as a new version of Android is released, the CyanogenMod team merges the sources with their CM branch, and then release a build. Depending on how major or minor the Android OS update is, this can take anywhere between a few hours to a few days.7.Interface TweaksThe Interface settings screen is packed with options. You can tweak the status bar, quick settings panel, notification drawer, and navigation bar. For example, you could reorder the buttons on the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen, or rearrange the order of the tiles in the quick settings panel.8.EqualizerThe DSP Manager app provides system-wide equalizer controls you can use to adjust the sound coming from your device, enabling bass boost, activating an equalizer, and selecting presets that match the music you listen to.9. over clocking or under clocking of CPUNote - Overclocking and underclocking are (custom) kernel features and aren't related to CyanogenMod unless the custom kernel supports only CyanogenMod and based off ROMs.Cyanogenmod allows users to ether increase the CPU frequency for more powerful performance or decrease the CPU frequency for enhanced battery life.10.Tweak the screen calibrationCyanogenMod has long let you tweak the look of your screen, fiddling with things like contrast and colour saturation. It comes in very useful if you find your phone’s normal colours a bit oversaturated, or a little dull-looking.Version 12 introduces LiveDisplay, a new hub for panel calibration that lets you mess with colour temperature, automated effective times, screen colour and colour calibration, and to lower power consumption.11.Advanced gesturesMany phones have little extra gestures these days, but with the latest version of CyanogenMod you get ones that don’t even require the screen to be on in order to register. We imagine this won’t be suitable for all phones, but it works well on the OnePlus One.Above all Cyanogenmod makes the most out of your devices capabilities.Whereas stock Android ROM has only limited features made available to the user.tip:-although Cyanogenmod is more advanced than stock ROM, it is highly recommended that unless you become completely familiar with Android ecosystem, you should stick to stock ROM only as it is non risky for new users . Also Cyanogenmod may not be available for some devices.Any suggestions to make this answer more helpful are always welcome.

What is the dirtiest fine print you've seen in a contract?

What is the dirtiest fine print you've seen in a contract? We purchased a new IBM Series 1 computer and hardware and software for time and attendance and to allow employees to clock in according to what manufacturing line they were working on. Different lines paid different premiums. The vendor included a clause that stated that we understood that if we did not pay their maintenance bill on time, that the application would stop working. I protested, but was overridden by my manager and the contract was signed. This is basically a time bomb. If we don’t pay the bill, we can’t use the system. Sounds reasonable to many people. I did manage to make sure that they kept all the source code on the computer.Well, the company went bankrupt and all the employees vanished off the face of the known world - right after we paid the annual maintenance. Two weeks later, the system died leaving an ominous message on the console, “Pay the maintenance!”.We called the vendor only to find out they didn’t exist anymore. We went to recompile the code and take out the time bomb only to find that we had multiple copies of every piece of source code - sometimes 10–15 copies. Every copy had the same date and time stamp. We didn’t know which piece of source code matched the executable file and didn’t know which module or modules were triggering the shutdown. It took 4 days to figure it out by recompiling each source module and comparing it to the executable, then looking in that source module to remove the time bomb.I wished I could have found the guy who sold it to us! Argh! Thanks for reminding me of a bad memory, Sean.

I'm a 15 year old "want-to-be" web developer. I've gotten over HTML quickly, and CSS as well; but JavaScript is by far obviously the hardest of all three. I tell myself sometimes that I will never be able to do that. Is JavaScript hard to learn?

JavaScript is as easy or as hard as you make it - it's relatively popular to say "go look at source code of websites you like and learn from that", but that advice is a little out of date in these days of massive JS applications (it used to be that many sites only had tens of lines of JS).To make it easier, you need to find a smaller chunk to bite off and investigate. Given that you already have HTML/CSS knowledge, you might want to start by considering small (and fun) expansions to your current sites and projects - the below might be a little cheesy, but they're how many oldschool JS programmers started:Making it so that clicking on something shows or hides something on the page (this tells you about onclick and interaction with CSS)Adding a clock to the corner of your page (this teaches you about timeouts/intervals and changing HTML content)Making something on your page follow the mouse (mouse events and CSS positioning)Drawing something with canvas (find some canvas tutorials)Fetching something from your server and displaying it on the page (XMLHTTPRequest)All of the above should be doable in less than 20 lines each (some much less), and should teach you about the idea of the page as a tree of nodes that you interact with. None of the above depend on knowing about JS's more advanced features (OO, closures), but can be made better once you understand them.Another way to learn is to take the source code of something a little more complicated that already works, and then begin modifying it to do what you want, little by little - much of this will just be changing numbers and variables around to see what happens, but as you do that the code will stop being a wall of indecipherable text, and you'll start to see how everything fits together. Processing.js might be a good place to do this.
