I was kicked out of my house at 17. It wasnt because my father thought I was ready. I was simply unwilling to accept his rules as far as my choice of girlfriend was concerned. It went as far as physical violence. It was tough times, but that was normal for my house in 2003. I was also in some crazy trouble with school and was expelled once. And got that over turned. Worked at my 3rd job, and other things of that nature.Basically, my dad said my way or the highway. He wanted control over things that were none of his business and he stopped supporting me because of it. So I left. Lived with my girlfriend for a month. Then moved to my cousins. Found work and just lived paycheck to paycheck. Joined the Marines. Didn't make the cut. Used my military check to buy a new (used) car. Started working at a lumber mill for 3 years. Quit there. Lived on wellfare for a year looking for work. Ended up hustling and selling things for local pilfer artist. (Fenced for thieves). Finally found work. I worked at a slaughter house for 3 years. Drank alot. Partied most of my early 20s. Decided I was done and went to Tech School at 26 because you don't need you parents signature to apply for loans at 26. Worked my way through tech school. Went to treatment for my drinking problem as I couldn't physically go hours without a drink and realized it was a problem. Worked a 6 month internship in a government facility. Didn’t have enough experience to keep the job. Tried to complete an associated degree in computer science application in line with my tech school training. Had a daughter born with a heart defect. Dropped out of college. Lived near children's hospital in a ronald mcdonald house for 2 years because my daughter required open heart surgery 3 times just to live, and required a heart transplant. During that time, had a son born. Got an internship in seattle using outreach programs for struggling families. They placed me in my trade. IT tech for minimum wage part time. It was an opportunity to get a good reference. Worked there until they said my daughter was ready to ‘go home.’ Got a job back home that was an IT tech job. Paid the most I ever been paid in my life. Been there ever since. Renting a house with a yard and married to my high school girlfriend with 2 kids. What my parents think of me or my life is the least of my worries since I moved out at 17.The point is, I was busy. Busy worried about eating. Busy worried about upkeeping my car. Dealing with your own issues as they come up. Life is very busy if you care about what your next move is. I have 30k in student loan debt. I have a decent job that I hope to be at for the forseeable future. My wife and kids wellbeing and happiness are my life.I have learned, if my dad was not so proud and eased up on the rules and freedoms in his house, my life would not be as hard as it was. I was literally looking for ways to eat and support myself. That meant work. That meant struggle. That meant staying on the grind.I believe in todays world, a child should have a safe place at home with parents until 25 at least. Most kids want independence. Which I required to grow. I believe that with loving support I might have finished college. I had no way of getting gas money or paying for food as a student during the bush presidency. The support programs I was in that paid for my tools and computer for tech school required I not have a job. But I couldn't afford 5k in tools. If I lived somewhere I didn't have to worry about at the mimimum food once a day, my grades would not have suffered. My drinking problems wouldn't be so bad as I partied when my life was sh*t and out of control.I won't follow the practice of kicking my kids out at 18. That is outdated and not practical for life today. When they turn 18, you can actually draw up a legal document and act as a landlord with written rules and guidelines as a room mate. This will help the child build rental history. Especially if the rental agreement is fair and in line with the freedoms of being an adult in a room mate/tenant relationship. That means that, you are not responsible for their curfew, what they do with their time, or how they spend their money. If they mess up and don't meet rent, you can place removal from home due to breach of contract. Be serious about it. It is a learning experience. At least it happened at home. And not with a real landlord. Teach them how you manage money and responsibilities. Always let them have freedoms to make mistakes. Just nurture your adult relationship with your child. So they know what it is like not being your responsibility. That they are responsible for themselves. Charge food in your rental agreements. Like an optional, 85 for food. If they do that, it lightens your grocery bill, and you have less issues with cooking for them at dinner time. Teach them the credit game. How to secure loans. And what the differences are in rates. Don't patronize them, and don't coddle them. But watch them. That is what I would do. I actually had a cousin of my wife's who I knew since he was 5 live with us. He did really well when he turned 18 and lived with my support and rules as a room mate. I signed his rental history as a room mate reference and had clear lines and reference for him. He ended up helping his mom and living with her as she was having health issues. He takes care of her and the bills. Which I helped him learn how to manage. Haha. His first month living with me, he opted not to help with groceries because he wanted to buy a game. And didn't budget for his gas to get to work. So he was like… what do I do. I refused to help as his responsibilites are not mine to worry about. Great learning experience for him. We ended up helping him with food and gas, but I let him learn from it first. I think that is what is best for a 18 year old. As they don't understand what it means to be responsible for themselves. Hell, I didn't know how to be responsible for myself either. I went countless days hungry. Hustling and trying to make ends meet. I wouldn't wish this on my kids. I would make sure they learn how to take care of themselves with supervision. And let them figure out when they are ready to leave on their own. My parents learned that they never see me because I remember how little I meant to them after 17 years of living with them. So we are still working on that adult relationship. It is tough. I did end up on their couch when I had my drinking problems. And they pointed me to the right people to get funding for my alcohol treatment. But I was 26. Been out of their house for almost 9 years before they helped me out. Wish they were there the whole time. I remember my tires on my car had wires coming out of all of them and my car swerved on the road a lot and I was broke. I broke down in tears hoping to get some help from my dad. I was afraid to ask for help. I didn't know how to. I cannot say how it made him feel to see me like that. But removing support for your children at 18 is so mean with how the world is built today. When removing help at 18 was normal was when a bagging job at the local suppermarket minimum wage paid for a house, car, and saving for retirement. Different age and time. Now that same bagging job might pay for just rent and ramen noodles for a month if you decide to sell your car. Room mates are a requirement until you have established credit and rental history. And that takes years to build. That is the new world. Keep that in mind. That is why so many people are homeless. I learned that if you sleep on someones couch, you are homeless. I didn't know that. It would help to know that when filling out welfare paperwork.
