What extracurriculars got you in an Ivy League engineering program?

I did not get into HYP (rejected by H+P, waitlisted by Y) which may be what you are really searching for, but here is my list anyways. I graduated from high school in 2018. Besides Columbia, I also got into Caltech and UPenn for engineering (all Regular Decision).STEM-Related ECs (roughly chronological order, based on start date)Winter 2014-Spring 2018: 4-year member and 2-year captain of school’s Academic Decathlon team. Won numerous 1st place individuals medals in various subjects (primarily science and math), including 2 perfect scores.Summer 2015: 2-week shadow/internship program at Edwards Lifesciences in Irvine, CA. Was able to learn about relevant machinery and assist biomedical engineers with experimental procedures.Spring 2016-Spring 2017: 2-year school representative for local Chemistry Olympiad competitions.Summer 2016: 4-week COSMOS research and lecture program at UCI - “Genes, Genomes, and Biocontrol”, conducted a bioinformatics/dev. bio project in small group and presented poster.Fall 2016-Spring 2018: Research internship at lab in UCI’s Cell /Dev. Biology Dept. Worked to develop accurate global models of gene regulation during cell differentiation utilizing Steinernema and C. elegans, and investigated orthologues of venom-inducing genes in these species to construct related gene and protein pathways.Summer 2017: Took part in Stanford’s 8-week SIMR medical research internship (5% acceptance); interned at bioinformatics lab. With R, systematically studied correlations between chemokine gene expression and immune cell proportion in organs using a dataset consisting of >9,000 organs from >400 donors. Discovered that a particular gene has extremely high chemoattraction activity compared to known chemoattractant proteins. Based on results, proposed a currently existing drug to be repurposed to cure Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF).Non-STEM ECs (again, roughly chronological)Fall 2014-Spring 2018: Founder and president of an initiative to solve academic summer learning loss that occurs with underprivileged students. Which is better choice? - MS in CS during spring 2015 at USC or fall 2014 at SUNY Buffalo?

The US academic year is usually divided into 4 semesters – fall, winter, spring and summer. The semesters are usually 13 weeks long. The fall semester starts somewhere between August and September and ends in late December or early January. The spring semester starts in January and ends in May.The summer semester starts in late May or early June and ends just before the fall semester begins. Not all universities have a winter semester but if they do, it is a very short semester squeezed between the fall and the spring semesters. Most universities in the U.S. accept applications only two times in a calendar year for the fall and the spring semesters of the academic year. Also, some universities only entertain applications for the fall semester. The application process for the fall semester usually starts one year before your joining during October and ends on December or January. Generally students are in dilemma whether to apply for fall or Spring Semester. In spring courses are tough, less Internship and job opportunities, less chances to get aid and part time jobs. Fewer intakes in spring, so not many courses will be offered. Getting internships will be easier. Seats are limited for spring admission. More pressure on students since courses will be tough. It is better to apply for fall semester unless there are some exceptional circumstances. Applying for fall offers following benefits:1. More chances of getting a financial aid.2. The academic year in US Universities begins with the fall semester, so there are more seats available in fall and hence more chances of admission being granted.3. Most core courses are offered in fall. So if you enrol in a spring session, you may find it a little difficult to plan your coursework.
