What is the standard US Army division into formations from Army through Regiment to Plattoon?
Ok so the basic answer is that a Division will have 3 to 4 Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs). The actual, specific organization of a BCT will depend on if its an Infantry, Armored, Aviation, etc.But the basic template is that there's a Brigade Headquarters and 3 to 5 Battalions. Now here's the difference between a Regiment and a Brigade. A Regiment will have say 3– Infantry Battalions and thats it. An Infantry BCT will have 3 Infantry Battalions, an Engineer Battalion, Artillery (named the Fires Battalion), Cavalry Squadron, and a Brigade Support Battalion (which would contain Medical Company, Maintenance Company, supply Distribution Company). So both Brigades and Regiments are roughly the same size, tho a Brigade is usually a little larger. A BCT may have less “teeth” compared to a Regiment but has more of the all important tail that actually keeps units sustained in the fight. In the modern US Army there's only a couple of Regiments left that are actually organized and named as such (like the 75th Ranger Regiment or the 3rd Infantry Regiment “The Old Guard”). But each Brigade retains its historical Regimental affiliation. Say 2nd Battalion/60th Infantry… the Battalion reports to its Brigade HQ like normal, as there is no more 60th Infantry Regiment commander, doesn't exist as an organized individual unit anymore, just as historical legacy. So in any case, from there you can see each Battalion is itself made up of 3–5 Companies. Each Company is further subdivided into 3–5 Platoons (and a Platoon is itself subdivided into 3–5 Squads). A Squad will have 2 or 3 Teams, and each Team is 3–6 Soldiers. So, working backwards, from smaller to larger, you start with your individual Soldier (your lowest ranking, Junior Enlisted, Private-1, Private-2, Private First Class, and Specialists). Take 4 Soldiers, give them a Sergeant Team Leader, and there's your Team. (4 Soldiers)2 Teams, plus a Staff Sergeant as a Squad Leader and you have a Squad of 9 Soldiers (thats an Infantry Squad, the basic template… an Engineer Squad or Military Police Squad may only have 6 Soldiers, and other differences will emerge between different types of units, but for this, I'll stick to the “basic” pattern).3 Rifle Squads and a Weapons Squad (machine guns and anti-tank) gives you an Infantry Platoon. Here we have our first Officer, a 2nd or 1st Lieutenant, as Platoon Leader. The PL will have a Platoon Sergeant (typically a Sergeant First Class) to help him run things since he's fresh puta school while the PL has been moving up through the ranks for roughly a decade or so. Add a couple other attachments (say the radio man, maybe a medic and/or Forward Observer, one or two more) and now our Platoon is roughly 40–50 Soldiers.3–5 Platoons make a Company. Just like a Platoon, we have a small Headquarters element. There's the Company Commander (a Captain), an Executive Officer (XO, would be a 1st Lieutenant), and the Senior Enlisted Advisor, the 1st Sergeant. Add in some NCOs (Sergeants and higher) to help run some of the admin sections (there'll be a plans or ooerations Sergeant who helps plan future ops for the Company, the Supply Sergeant, maybe a couple others depending on the specific unit). A Company will typically be ~100–120 Soldiers.A Battalion will be 3–5 Companies. A BN will also be the smallest unit to have a dedication Staff. Such as there's an S1 (Personnel, think the Army's version of HR), S2 (Security and Intelligence), S3 (Operations), S4 (Supply), S6 (Commo, radios and the like) S5 seems to have been lost to historical stuff, was never really sure what they were supposed to be, but no one had an S5 when I was in so 🤷🏼♂️S3 will be the biggest section. They'll almost be a mini Company in and of themselves. They'll have an Operations Officer (a Major) and a Master Sergeant. Besides the Staff sections you have your Battalion Commander (a Lieutenant Colonel) and XO (a Major) and Senior Enlisted Advisor (Command Sergeant Major), a Chaplain, some other odds and ends (a Sniper Squad, or Tactical PSYOP Team, etc,, would report to the BN HQ say)For administrative purposes, these Staff sections are organized as one Headquarters Company (yeah you'll have a Captain in charge of the company that has a Major or two, its pretty much just an admin thing). Thus you have the Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC). As we get into larger units, so to does the HQ get bigger, by the time we're at Division level its the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion. So anyways, 3 or 4 companies plus HHC and each Battalion is roughly 600+ Soldiers.A simple Regiment of 3–5 Battalions plus an HQ would be ~1200 Soldiers give or take. But as we saw in the above chart, Brigades will have almost twice that, and can be 2,000 Soldiers. A Brigade will be commanded by a Colonel.Take 3 or 4 Brigades, plus Aviation, Fires, and a smiling assortment of support units and we have a Division of over 10,000, they can be upwards of 15,000 Soldiers, usually commanded by a Lieutenant General. So that's the basic generics. Each individual unit will have its own quirks and be slightly differently organized than another similar unit, so its tough to give specifics. Especially as various support units can have different sizes and organizations to support their specific tasks, but thats the overall gist of everything.
