Intelligence is simply not agreed upon much in science. You’d think it would be, right?So you can stumble upon some discussion on intelligence in various courses in psychology, but in no course I took in my entire degree, did we really dig deeply into the subject.MIT has a fascinating course, at the The Center for Brains, Minds & Machines called Human Intelligence, described thus:Analyzes seminal work directed at the development of a computational understanding of human intelligence, such as work on learning, language, vision, event representation, commonsense reasoning, self reflection, story understanding, and analogy. Reviews visionary ideas of Turing, Minsky, and other influential thinkers. Examines the implications of work on brain scanning, developmental psychology, and cognitive psychology. Emphasis on discussion and analysis of original papers. Students taking graduate version complete additional assignments.But the prerequisite course for this class, is Artificial Intelligence, described:This course introduces students to the basic knowledge representation, problem solving, and learning methods of artificial intelligence. Upon completion of 6.034, students should be able to develop intelligent systems by assembling solutions to concrete computational problems; understand the role of knowledge representation, problem solving, and learning in intelligent-system engineering; and appreciate the role of problem solving, vision, and language in understanding human intelligence from a computational perspective.So, well, not exactly psychology.Another example of a course on intelligence is at George Mason University in Northern Virginia, in the Graduate School of Education:EDEP 653: Culture and Intelligence is described this way:Explores different theoretical perspectives on intelligence as they relate to individual and cultural differences. Examines issues related to heritability and measures of intelligence, and intelligence in the cultural context.That sounds more like what most people interested in studying intelligence are probably looking for. The syllabus is well worth reviewing, particularly for the required and suggested reading list: EDEP 653, Section 001: Culture and Intelligence, 3 Credits, Spring 2017 Faculty Name: Dr. Mary Guckertf.I have read about 2/3 of the books on that syllabus, and while it is skewed in some ways, I haven’t seen a briefer list that I like better, so it is worthwhile.If someone wants to know as much as possible about intelligence and buy only one book, I would recommend the first one on that list, which generally sells for between $50 and $200, The Cambridge Handbook of Intelligence. Click the link to see the table of contents.It has just over 1000 pages, published in 2011. I haven’t read every page, but most of it. It is dense, and happily, it has various chapters that do not agree with other chapters. I am not being ironic or sarcastic when I say “happily” there. Since intelligence is simply not a clearly defined concept, no great text on the subject should be all easy, and uncomplicated.To the editors’ credit, they allowed many of the important contradictions in the field to arise organically, and avoided most of the bickering.I can’t say the same about some of the other books on the list, but sometimes reading academic bickering is interesting.Still, again, the course is not in the psychology department.Personally, I find these two examples of courses in intelligence to be a pretty good representation of the academic field. That is, I think students interested in intelligence are more likely to find courses covering the subject in obscure places like an AI department at MIT, and more commonly in graduate programs in education.Do not expect to find many courses on the subject of intelligence. (Unless you are speaking of military, political, or police intelligence, which are so numerous, it makes it tricky to find courses on human intelligence on internet searches.) It is one thing to teach the history of a time and place where scholars have honest disagreements about what happened, but at least they all agree on what time and place they are studying. It is quite another to teach about a concept that is so contentious, it makes global climate change seem straight-forward.

Ekman’s work is reportedly the basis for the TV series “Lie to Me,” according to the jacket of “Telling Lies.” He studied nonverbal communication at the Univ. CA, SF for more than 20 years, where he was and may still be a psychology professor. The application of the theories would be encompassed by forensic psychology.
