What was your percentage in class 12?

Mine is definitely a tale to tell. I was promoted to class 12. I got 38 in Physics in finals of class 11. But due to my past academics and better performance Physics teacher just gave me passing marks 40. He also showed me the answer sheet totalling was even 38. The teacher said I didnt gave him any scope where he could just place numbers. But by his grace I passed 11 and was in 12. Ours was first batch of school. So those who might not know the marking of first batch is done very differently for a school in ICSE and ISC by Board.Ours was class of 2004, ICSE Board. I dont know how teachers day came in first week of September and I was failed in Physics, Chemistry and got just pass marks in Maths in Half yearly. Till now, I haven't joined any coaching / tuition. Was busy watching movies, sports and just usual stuffs. Then I joined one coaching class for chemistry. There I found 8-10 of my classmates. All charged up and almost everyone has his 70-80% course finished. I wasn't studying there also. I was busy cracking jokes there making girls smile and teacher laugh. Lol.Teacher at tuition was teaching Chemistry and after 7 days there was a test on Organic chemistry. I prepared well, in 3–4 days and studied till late night and went for the test. After seeing question paper everything looked familiar. But I was just messed up with Aldehydes, Ketones, Alcohols etc. I scored 3.5/50. Now, I realised its high time and something must be done or I wont pass Boards in 3 months. Teacher laughed at me hard and all the beautiful girls of tuition laughed with him on me. I was drained and sad inside but hid my emotions well and laughed with them. My ego was hurt and hurt real bad.My basics were strong, I knew. I scored 88.8% in 10th ICSE with 96 in maths (I was 2nd Topper in 10th in my school). The day was 10.10.2003. I made my time table giving 3 hours each to Chemistry, Physics and Maths. Besides, I was solving Model papers selectively in class intervals with friends. I finished calculus and coordinate Geometry till 15.11.2003. My in-organic and Physical Chemistry was finished till 30.11.2003. Physics was nightmare but still I finished 30% till November end. When I say finished then I mean from two reference book, learnt all formulae, practice all concerned numericals from last 10 years. From December I went to Organic Chemistry. I made a flowchart of conversions. How to add a carbon and how to reduce a carbon. learnt all named reaction (Reimer tiemann was my favorite). Did lesson by lesson, Benzene, aldehydes, ketones, phenols all. By christmas I was feeling good about Organic chemistry. Me and my friends use to give any Organic compunds to each other and we have to convert each to other and vice-versa. I was loser in December but was competing well from january, 2004.Meanwhile, I sucked at all tuition tests. I was made fun of, but everyone noticed a Changed me. I tried to focus full in tuition and at school so that those topics I wont have to cover at home. But at both places almost 90% syllabus was almost covered. But I did understand remaining 10% well. I revised all calculus in 10 days from Christmas to 5 th Jan, 2004. All integral calculas. It was indeed a big task. I finished full course first time on 31.01.2004. It was good for my confidence ( I knew how much part syllabus I have left to complete full 100%).LOL.Revesion started from February. No one was attending tuition class in february. Only I and bunch of my friends did. Teacher was also not keen to come to class, but he had to for us. He hated us for that. Our pre-board result came my marks:Maths: 68/100Physics: 52/100Chemistry: 72/100I was happy and teachers and all my tuition mates were happy that I will pass. Then A full test of Chemistry at tuition on 12.02.2004. It went all right. I scored 82/100 in it. Sir praised me that day, and said he always knew it. I was more than delighted. Girls clapped for me. Only my heart knew what it took from 3.5 to 82. I could literally feel the journey of past 4 months. Then I realised why sometimes journey is better than the destination. My honour restored that day.Well for the boards my score was as under:Maths: 76 (I could have scored more. There were two questions of co-ordinate geometry wrong in the paper which I realised after wasting around 40 mts. You can still verify this)Physics:82Chemistry: 84English: 78Hindi: 88I was happy that I passed with 80.4%. I was not topper this time but was more happy than the topper. Later on My mother told me that she wasnt expecting that I will pass. It was one hell of a journey for me where in I also fell for a girl , my competitor since class VIII and later married her in 2012. This story is for another time.So guys and Gals who are lagging right now, dont lose hope. Just charge up and go and study real hard.PS: Ty Saud Sir and all teachers. Ty all my friends for teasing , teaching and helping me. Ty my wife for being in my life.

Have you ever experienced -- or know of anyone who has endured -- workplace bullying by a manager/ supervisor?

Me! A senior manager took a dislike to me. I don't know why. Basically, I went for an interview for a slightly higher grade job. I messed up the interview but put it down to experience and went back to my old job. I found out that this manager had called my manager and told him not to promote me under any circumstances! I was very good in my job. Highly qualified and I had absolutely no problems. My manager felt bad but wouldn't do anything. No written record so I couldn't prove anything. Had an interview for my job to be upgraded. I attended as I was assured, verbally nothing on the record, by a manager I trusted (stupid me) that I would be considered equally! Didn't get upgraded even though 2 other colleagues did. Spoke to my line manager and saw the scoring sheet. I outscored by a considerable margin the other candidates. I knew I interviewed very well. I lost my patience. My manager said for me to apply in a couple of months, wink wink.Fast forward a bit. Had an incident in work. I was found completely blameless. I highlighted a “disconnect” between frontline staff and management in a high level meeting. It was why the incident happened. Inflexible working practices led by management. Lo and behold the manager who didn't like me called again to poo poo me for this job. I applied for courses and the application got lost or turned down for vague reasons. My line manager said it was bad but couldn't/wouldn't say anything. I had no proof. All verbal communication. No written evidence even though I deliberately raised this issue via email for a written record!I became depressed. I am prone. Felt worthless. I worked so hard to get where I was. Had a little breakdown. Swore at a different boss who was useless and I got brittle at her incompetence. Got moved from my job. Had a meeting one to one with the original manager who didn't like. He was a total twat! I explained I couldn't work shifts because I was a single dad and had no childcare. He said “you!!!!!!! got custody???????” in a disgraceful way but I couldn't prove anything. I wanted to say, wtf do you mean?!?!!?! You don't know me. But what could I do?Basically I left my job and my career. I was bullied. Made to feel like shit. No recourse. I'm now very depressed. High level of meds. Been out of work for 3 years. Can't see a future but I carry on. I have counselling from some people I used to work with and I know word will get back to the manager that caused all this and he will be grinning.TL;DR I know. It's awful. Life ruined.

What did you learn from working your first job? Did it change the way you see your future career?

My first real job was working in a supermarket in the UK.I had just turned 18 years old and was studying. I would work at the weekends on the tills as a cashier.I didn’t mind the job that much. I always tried my hardest to be as efficient and as fast as possible, whilst greeting the customers.Thinking back on it, I took the job rather seriously! One might think that nothing would be learnt on a job like that but there are a huge number of indicators which, looking back on it, are important:I had multiple regular customers who would deliberately let people in front of them so they could come to my till and be served by me.This meant that customers appreciated my friendliness, professionalism and the fact I pack shopping bags very well; thanks mum!I absolutely loved helping customers when they needed some specific help on something: finding a product, an old lady asked me how the phone top-ups worked.I always put the customer first and genuinely enjoyed helping them. I found it extremely satisfying to help the customers.I won an award for the store because of “excellent customer service”. We had a mystery shopper come in which is basically a person who works for the supermarket and pretends they are a customer. The fact I loved helping the customers means that I completely passed the “test”. The store got the highest rating they could for customer service. An old lady once had three bags of shopping and had to go outside the shop to get to the taxi (literally right outside the door). She asked me if I could help her. I immediately got off my till, took her bags and assisted her outside the shop. She wouldn’t stop thanking me for the help. When I got back inside my boss told me off for leaving my till but I didn’t care. I did the right thing and there was no lost production as the other tills could handle the queue.I learnt that I have very little respect for the “rules” when it involves hindering the customer’s experience. I will do whatever I feel is right in that moment and I am not bothered by the consequences. When there were quiet moments in the shop. I would take some paper and write down maths equations I had been studying that day at college. I would change all the numbers around and try and calculate the correct outputs.I learnt that I find it impossible to work without being productive. I wasn’t allowed to leave my till and organise the shelves, so I did what I could to make my time as useful as possible for me whilst waiting for customers. I got very good grades in that maths module due to all my practising!I worked multiple double shifts to help out my direct managers when someone else decided to not turn up to work. They were always extremely appreciative.I learnt that I take my job seriously and will do whatever I can to help the company achieve. Even if that means sacrificing my own personal time. The store owner used to like coming down to the tills once a month to serve customers for about 10 minutes. He would always go on the “fast” till and scan items as quickly as he could. He’d then leave, after 10 minutes and come back with the score sheet showing that he had a much higher speed than the rest of us and we needed to work harder. He was simply lucky he didn’t get one of the really slow customers who mess up your entire average. On an 8 hour shift, you get at least 10 of those customers and it ruins the entire average for the day.I learnt that not all managers are good and will manipulate statistics to make themselves look good. On the contrary, my direct manager (the till area manager) was the complete opposite type of guy and I respected him very much.Last and finally, management changed. My fantastic direct manager I mentioned got a promotion in a new store. He left. The new manager came in whilst I was away and because I wasn’t there when she arrived, she removed all my hours which I had already booked with them. I returned a month later (this was all agreed beforehand) I came to my shift to find that she’d removed all my hours and hadn’t assigned new ones for me. I handed her my badge, didn’t tell her I was even quitting and left the store. Once she realised who I was and that I was the highest performing employee, I received multiple calls begging me to come back but I refused.I learnt that respect must be given to me from the company if I give everything I can to help that company succeed. The new manager didn’t care at all about who I was until it was too late. She should have shown an interest. I learnt that in that situation, if the company changes their attitude towards me and that respect/loyalty disappears, I am gone. One would think that working in a supermarket doesn’t teach you a lot of things compared to working as a programmer, for example. That being said, I may not have learnt technical skills but I learnt a huge amount about my views on business, my professionalism, my desire to achieve and the amount of effort I put in to trying to make the company great. Thanks Sainsbury’s!
