PDF Editor FAQ

I'm in an advanced math class in school. I get B's and C's consistently, and even though I'm only in middle school, my grades are ruining my life and my self-esteem. What do I do?

You 100% should be worried about this, not because you are getting bad grades, but because you probably have gaps in your knowledge. If you don’t fill these gaps, math will always be a trouble area for you, which will substantially limit the careers you can have in the future.Given that you are on winter break, what I would do isGo to the library and check out some textbooks on elementary school math. Start from the first grade and go up to algebra.Try solving the problems in each chapter, without using a calculator. Before attacking the problems, read the textbook so you understand what they are trying to teach. If you understand the material, this should not take very long. If you don’t understand the material, read the textbook and do the practice problems until you understand it.Solve as many problems as you need to for the concepts to sink in. Math takes a lot more practice than most Americans get; when I was growing up my parents would make me go through textbooks on the weekends and solve all the odd problems in the book.

How do you feel about white people adopting black children?

Let me tell you our story. My adopted daughter is black. She is my wife’s sister’s daughter. Both of her biological parents were in no position financially or otherwise to care for her. So we adopted her when she was young.Kids are products of their environments. Her adopted Dad is this nerdy white guy (a bit OCD) who is a math teacher and bodybuilder. Her adopted mother was a pragmatic, take -no-bullshit Jamaican lady who worked 10 hour shifts every evening in the OR. Her Dad had a lot of time on his hands. He and his daughter got to spend a lot of time together during the developmental years. Like any language, math was practiced 365 days a year. She quickly became fluent in her new language. The week before her 9th birthday she asked if she could start working out. It was obvious she inherited her biological parents’ athletic ability as her strength and speed went through the roof. Our little girl finished high school math before she started high school. She started college at 14. She is currently 16 and is starting her first year of college full time. She already has 11 credit hours of college math. At age 20 she will graduate with a BS in Bioengineering. She is also working on her pilot’s license. She plays golf. Won regionals in the 4X100 relay. Won the 2013 AAU Florida State Gymnastics Championship taking 3 of 4 events. That same year she set 4 Florida powerlifting records (bench, squat, deadlift, and total). She also ran cross country in middle school. She was working out with 135lbs on the bench press at the age of 14.Right before she won Florida State Gymnastics Championship. She played guitar, danced salsa, and did martial arts (Krav Maga) when she was younger. We were in her business 24/7 growing up. As a result she is on autopilot. Almost complete autonomy. She has had a checking account and debit card since she was 14. Has a strong sense of self and knows what she wants. She doesn’t want to date until she is older because she isn’t attracted to boys her age. Loves her natural hair and said she never wants to relax it. She wants to be a pilot in the Air Force. She works and buys her own school supplies, clothes, and car insurance. When she was 12 she set a World Record on the Concept 2 Rower in the 100 meter row.The cutest bat girl I have ever seen. Can’t take us anywhere. Lol.I love her dearly. She has made me so proud. She always did the right thing. She got the best of many worlds. A few years ago her Jamaican grandmother moved in with us and it was like having 3 parents. Her best friend is Grandma. Seriously. In the end there wasn't anything magical about me being white other than perhaps a diverse offering of activities. I doubt she would have seen Van Halen, Guns ’n’ Roses, and The Who if I wasn't white. Lol. Good natured jokes were flying when she showed up to school the day after Van Halen wearing a concert shirt. Her teacher even joked with her about it.It was all about having time and money WELL SPENT. Just throwing money at them isn't the answer. We didn't spend money on expensive clothes , designer purses, and iphones. We spend it on hobbies and activities that enrich her. She doesn't own a video game system. She has a $50 phone. She got $150 (no actual gifts) for Christmas to spend however she wanted. She earns $500 every June for a 4.0. All As and one B earns her a Happy Meal. She had to learn to budget money and she had to develop a work ethic. She shops at Goodwill and Target. For people concerned about her losing her culture, our entire household represents several diluted cultures. We don't know what our culture is really. I'm white Midwestern and my wife is Jamaican. We lived on the Mexican border for 5 years. Without a doubt, a lot of their culture was mixed in with ours. We currently live in a very diverse community. Her closest friends are neither black nor white. They happen to be Hispanic. I don't think she really identifies herself by her skin color. One of our proudest moments was when her friend's very traditional Mexican father asked me if she could be in her quincenera. This pic is from 2015 when we both won our age group in a 5K.She did this problem from an Algebra 2 textbook when she was 10. But, for all her gifts, spelling wasn't one of them. Lol. She made me a “Brithday” card every year.Ever see such a cute baby? My wife and I hit the jackpot.Update February 12th, 2021Heaven is 18 and set to graduate with her associate degree in applied science in 3 months. One month before she graduates high school. I wanted to thank everyone for the upvotes and shares. I failed to mention our enabler. My wife. The voice of reason. The one who was the perfect complement to me in child rearing. We hope we can encourage more people to adopt. Love doesn't have a color. There are tens of thousands of Indian girls and Asian children waiting to be adopted. There are thousands of foster children in the US who would give anything for a real family. Getting to be a part of her life forever changed mine. The End

Which books do you recommend for preparing for the IIT-JEE exam?

Disclaimer: I write from my personal experience and in most cases, the book and the method I mention here were recommended by my teachers. Each teacher has a different way of teaching and different books complement different teaching styles. So even though I might say in my answer that you should/must do x, please note that this is entirely based on my experience and may not directly apply to your case.A key part of your preparation for IIT-JEE is not only the books you study, but how you go about studying them. In this answer, I will give my opinion on both the aspects. The idea is to ensure that you understand the subjects well which will then enable you to tackle problems which might be new/old.General Advice:Study NCERT books thoroughlyThe first thing that you should do for any topic in any subject is go through the NCERT chapter. This is exclusive of my disclaimer above and I would strongly recommend that you do the NCERTs irrespective what your teachers say.NCERT textbooks are written by a team of author's who are all experts in their area. For example, one of the author's in the Physics textbook is Prof. Ajoy Ghatak who is an expert in the field of optics and I would assume that the chapter(s) on optics are primarily written by him. Also, NCERTs contain some of the most basic material explained very well. It is essential that you master all the basics before moving on to more "advanced" ideas. So, the first thing to do is read the NCERT chapters thoroughly and this includes any side notes or extra information that may or may not be part of the CBSE boards syllabus. Once you have completed the exercises for the relevant topic, you are ready to move to the next step.Read an advanced bookOnce you have finished the relevant sections from the NCERT textbook, you can move on to a more "advanced book". This book would differ with subjects and may differ on different topics within the subject. A list of these "advanced books" is contained below in this answer. In all cases, the idea is to understand the theory behind some of the more advanced topics that may not be covered in the NCERT textbooks. As in the case of the NCERT textbooks, you should begin with understanding the theoretical parts and then do the exercises given in the book. In my opinion, at this point you should have a sufficient level of understanding to help you do well in the IIT-JEE.Note: A lot of these books may contain sections that are beyond the IIT-JEE syllabus and for students focused on the JEE alone, you may omit these extraneous sections after consulting the JEE syllabus.PracticeOnce you have done both the relevant topic from both the NCERT and the advanced textbook, if you have time at your hand, you can move ahead and practice some the topics from books which focus primarily on questions. A list of practice material can be found below. This would help you strengthen your understanding of topic and also give you some experience with application of the concepts which you have learnt. If you are not able to solve some question, you may re-read the relevant section from the NCERT or the "advanced" book.Books:By default, the books mentioned here are "advanced" books. Any books to be used only for practice are otherwise specified. Please note that if I list several books for the same topic(s) then you may do either or both (if you have enough time).Past year IIT-JEE questions are a great way to practice and test your understanding for all topics.Mathematics:I can not stress this enough -- studying theory in maths is as important as in physics and chemistry. Maths is not only about solving some equations or some problems but also about understanding how theorems were arrived at and the intuition behind several conventions and ideas. So it is very important that you study the theory given in NCERTs and other books that precedes the examples and questions. This would give you a better understanding of the concepts and certainly help you in JEE.Higher Algebra by Hall and Knight for AlgebraTextbook of Co-ordinate Geometry for IIT-JEE by A.
