I have a model I call Play, Praise and Worship that works quite well with mixed as groups. It's based on the idea that by creating a developmentally appropriate play based environment for children you can address the faith development needs of children across a broad spectrum of ages in early childhood including the combining of preschool and primary grade school (K-3) children. The key is to set up an environment that allows children of various ages to explore the same materials while achieving different learning goals. (Creative Curriculum is a good place to start to set up the classroom).One your physical space is arranged, the next step is to look at the stages of faith development and identify what it is you wish to instill across the course of the congregational year. I find it most effective to support the entire family if the Sunday school curriculum is reflective of the liturgical calendar for the year. This does however mean you need to have children's ministry represented at the weekly worship planning sessions.The theme being addressed in the sermon should be reflected in the play centers, the story/lesson for large group time and the music for song time. If you focus on process oriented projects instead of product oriented worksheets the children will mentor one another and gain self esteem in the process of creating the projects that will reinforce the lessons.Yes this approach takes a little more training of your sunday school teachers but when you've got a wide range of ages the PPW has always worked for me.
