I've been in too many arguments about this already, and I can sum up the responses I've dealt with as follows:How was Trump to know this was serious?As a former risk manager, I know that every good mid-sized company has a risk strategy and every half-decent project manager knows how to quantify risk and make contingencies. If there's a 10% chance of cratering the company or project you have to put a contingency in place.It's China's fault for not communicating.We should all be perfectly capable of assigning blame to everyone involved. China does bear responsibility. At the same time, ample warning was sounded by WHO, the CDC, and US intelligence, and it's the president's responsibility to keep Americans safe, not China's.China cooked up the virus in a lab/the US tricked China into stealing this from a Canadian lab or other variations.Conspiracy theories are difficult to argue with because people keep inventing new “facts” faster than you can research them. Beyond that, proving that their conspiracy theories are bunk seems to harden their beliefs in conspiracy theories. Sadly, a large part of “alternative media” it's part of this.It's not a big deal and more will die from the lockdown than the virus.This is a problem with education. Forecasting using simple math is something anyone can do, but from the beginning people have said “not a big deal, only 1,000 cases in the US” while not realising the growth rates or the number of people who will die if it is allowed to grow unabated and with no currently successful treatments.The CDC, FDA, WHO and any other three-letter agency are corrupt and incompetent.The pandemic has certainly shown institutional rot, particularly in the CDC. In January, people were saying CDC should take the lead in China because of its great capabilities around H1N1, Ebola, etc. What we found was that all of the east Asian countries, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada were much more advanced on coronaviruses than the CDC.After Trump declared an emergency, the FDA had to work within a framework that was unsuited to the pandemic. This stopped everyone but the CDC from creating and using tests. The fact that there was no one at the Whitehouse dealing with an unexpected legal fallout was a major shortcoming.While the shortcomings are true, these are also some of the best organisations in the world. The speed at which they mobilised for the swine flu epidemic under Obama was great. These organisations can be wielded very effectively or can be ignored at your peril.Stop talking sedition and get behind the President.Sadly I've had this one. We are not in a war. Hospitals are the battleground and caring will save people. Actions by the president should be challenged, particularly when they've allowed thousands of deaths and sent the country into a depression.This pandemic was Trump's real opportunity to show leadership and become a hero. He knows it and for the first time had not been able to shape the narrative by generating controversy. What we need to do is pay attention, demand a coherent national plan for getting back to work, and international cooperation to limit second and third waves should they come.

What are your thoughts about Obama’s speech in which he said, “I get that this president wants full credit for the economy he inherited, and zero blame for the pandemic he ignored. But you know what — the job doesn't work that way?”I just watched the Obama speech in Miami. Could we pause for a moment and remember what a dynamic and well spoken leader he was. I don’t care what your politics are, if you think Trump is entertaining, Obama is someone off the charts!For 50 minutes he stood there weaving a picture of Trump that was filled with humor, facts and perfect support for Biden-Harris. I have never seen anyone skewer the opposition more effectively than Obama.I am not sure if he was a great President, certainly he says in every speech that he and Biden were not perfect. He does say the Republicans under McConnell tried to block him from day one but remarkably he constantly goes back to the theme that he loves his country, that he is inclusive of all people whether they voted for him or not and that he left an economy that had 73 months of uninterrupted job growth.He had his time, it was not perfect but he did a lot, not enough mind you a lot. He took over what could have been a great recession and got congress to put enough money into the economy to save the financial industry and Wall Street and the auto industry. He did not grow manufacturing enough and being from Michigan that is a big deal for me and my family and friends and the rest of the Midwest where ironically Obama is from, Chicago.But if you look by contrast, we all know Trump chose the easy way out, no investment, ABSOLUTELY ZERO IN INFRASTRUCTURE AND HE CONTROLLED EVERYTHING FOR 2 YEARS. No solutions on education, below zero on healthcare, Obama ticked off the list and it is long on what Trump didn’t do besides appoint judges and make a lot of noise but no action.Trump bullied the Federal Reserve into lowering interest rates which also juiced the economy and keeps the financial industry afloat right now and he gave his tax cut to the rich and corporations with no requirement to invest in America and they just put it in their pockets and did share buybacks, juicing the market even more and screamed bloody murder when the pandemic came as they had nothing left.So when the pandemic hit Trump had a choice. Take control, wipe it out like so many countries have or ? Well he panicked and continues to and has no plan. It is obvious to everyone that Trump has no clue and has a visceral disdain for any expertise. Because of this and his total focus on himself, 230,000 Americans (actually more according to the CDC) have died and we are at 90,000 cases a day of covid way surpassing the worst of it in April when Trump held back PPE as Jared Kushner put it, ‘its ours not theirs’ in response to a request from states for PPE.Now we are going into the darkest hours for America and the world. They estimate 200,000 more at least will die by the end of the year, if masks are not mandatory and tracing and distancing and quarantining, then it could reach a million.I ask all of the Republicans and Conservatives, how can you justify this? As Obama put it, the only comparison is between the US and other countries, not other pandemics. And the US has totally failed and Trump refuses to own it or do anything about it except lie that ‘we have turned the corner’. Tell that to the 90,000 new cases today in America and the 230,000 dead with no plan from the Federal government. A complete abdication of support. Trump, I truly get nauseous when I even think about his arrogance and demeaning of those who died saying he beat it when he had the ‘world’s best doctors’. Well no one else does, they have to figure it out themselves as you have abandoned them in their greatest hour of need.The American people deserve better than this mess. Trump, takes no responsibility for anything, Obama was right and nailed it.

Hmmm—who should I listen to—the medical professionals, or Trump and his fellow demagogues on the right who never ever lie to us?And I’ll tell you why people are so freaked out. I work with a grocery chain as one of my clients. They have extraordinary volume in every state they are in—from Blue California, Washington, Oregon and Nevada, to red Idaho, Texas, Arizona and Oklahoma. Everywhere—people are scared—and it doesn’t matter what their politics are.You know why they’re scared? It’s not just the virus itself—we’ve been through bad epidemics and even pandemics before. They are scared because whether they admit it or not, they have no confidence in the leadership of this country.When a crisis hits, the only thing a leader has is his or her credibility. Even conservatives know Trump is an incompetent liar. It was fun when it was all about “owning the libs” and “making liberals’ heads explode”—but this is no longer a fucking political football game or a political Reality TV show—this is simply reality. And people are dying.And we have a moron in the White House who has no fucking clue what he is doing, who is flailing about, can’t even keep his lies or bullshit consistent (although that’s nothing new), the economy is crashing. The CDC was gutted to spite Obama. Pandemic response teams—disbanded to spite Obama. We’ve had government by snit, and this is the result. People are going to die, lose their jobs, lose their homes—all because a segment of the population treated this all as some sort of fucking game—where it was more important to stick it to the libs.And that is why—whether or not many will even admit it—people are scared.
