Yes. There are professors who are not M.Techs from top institutes.The recruitment process for professors is itself very tedious in IITs. They have to go through some 4–5 rounds to get in as Asst. Professor. The process somewhat looks like following:Resume shortlisting (Based on experience and quality of research/Minimum qualification is Post Doctoral research)Seminar presentation to department students and faculty membersIn person interview with selected professorsInterview from departmental panelInterview by institute panelI used to be TA for seminar arrangement, I witnessed a MIT, USA guy not able to answer some basic questions, hence he was rejected.If somebody not from a top institute, still able to clear such a tough selection process, I suppose he must be a self made man who did it in-spite of scarcity of facilities which other good institute student gets. He should be the right choice then to be a guide, teacher and a professor.So it doesn’t matter even if somebody is not M.Tech from a top institute.

Short answer:As a stock-picker who manages a long-term, concentrated portfolio, I spend minimum 1 week, maximum 1 month to research a stock.Long answer:The main objective of the research is "high conviction" about the opportunity based on the deep understanding of the company and its situation. I continue researching until my inner confidence level goes above a certain threshold (which is different for different investors).At the very minimum, I don't invest until I have prepared 4 documents:Financial model in Excel, which includes historical analysis, forecast, and valuation analysis;Qualitative "Q&A" about the company and the industry: I have a check list of standard questions I must answer for any stock to make sure I understand the space and the business;"Investment Thesis": a document that defines the investment opportunity, and sums up my investment decision and key reasons behind it;"Investment Plan": a document that describes how I will manage the investment (position size, entry strategy, how to monitor it, when to exit, etc).Time required to prepare these documents properly depends on several factors:Prior knowledge of the industry and company. If you are new to the space, budget more time;Complexity of the business. It's one thing to research a small retailer, and another to research a large bank;Complexity of the situation. It's easier to analyze "business as usual" vs. business in some major change (i.e, turnaround or distress);Type of position: it takes me more time to research shorts than longs;Size of commitment - the larger portion of the portfolio you plan to invest, the more thorough you should be;I can afford significant time commitments per stock because my target portfolio is long-term (average holding period is 5 years) and concentrated (10-20 positions). I need only 4-6 high quality opportunities per year and can afford to be thorough. For people who have higher portfolio turnover or diversification such intensive research can be unrealistic.You can reduce research time without sacrificing quality and depth using a variety of tactics:Improve quality of leads;Create routines and templates, standardize everything that can be standardized;Specialize: focus on a limited number of spaces and opportunity types that are easily understandable to you;Piggy-back on analysts' research (use it to educate yourself faster about the space and the company, and milk it for data sources and contacts);etc.Eventually, the biggest factor that defines your research time will be experience. It now takes me 2 weeks to research what used to take 2 months.
