Why do most US colleges limit students to working only 20 hours a week?

I think it is to enforce an "academics-first" policy, that students should be students first and employees second. Also, if a student is employed on campus under the Federal Work Study program, there is a limit of 20 hours a week. Finally, at many universities, anyone working over 50% time qualifies for benefits, such as sick leave and holiday pay. Many universities allow student employees to work up to 40 hours a week when classes aren't in session.

Have you looked at the $1.9 trillion stimulus that passed the House and soon the Senate? Will it change America with a form of UBI for women with children and so many other payments? What is next from the Democrats?

I am not an expert but from what I have been reading and listening to, the $1.9 trillion stimulus is a game changer. You can read it if you want, I want to make a specific point about the stimulus, THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING AND I MEAN EVERYTHING.In combination with the 900 billion in December, the vaccination progress, the drop in CV19 deaths and cases, this is historic.Repeat, Historic and Biden hung in there, he was correct and he will be seen as the 1st President since FDR to blow open an economic recovery in a massive way. And it is across the board, it has a unique provision that is a form of UBI (Universal Basic Income) through so called child tax credits where you get the money even if you don’t make any money. So even if you are unemployed you get cash. The USA just made its first major push back against Republican cuts to the social safety net in 40 years. You can laugh at Joe but do so at your peril. Indeed for millions and 10s of millions of Americans, this is the 1st step of Happy Days are Here Again.Joe, policy wonking on the stimulus, we get it, the American people thank you.Stimulus ChecksThe plan includes a central promise of Democrats: boosting direct payments to individuals to $2,000 for most Americans, on top of the $600 that Congress approved in December.Vaccinations, TestingBiden’s plan includes $20 billion to create a national vaccine distribution program that would offer free shots to all U.S. residents regardless of immigration status.State AidBiden is pushing for $350 billion in funding assistance for state, local and territorial governments plus $20 billion for public transit systems. Many Republicans have chafed at more money for local governments, however, saying it amounts to a bailout for mismanaged government budgets.Unemployment InsuranceBiden’s plan would extend and expand unemployment benefits that are scheduled to run out in mid-March. The proposal increases a weekly federal benefit to $400 from $300 and extends it through the end of September.Minimum Wage - $15 per hourThis is out in the Senate but did make it through the House. So forget about it.Paid LeaveThe Biden plan would create a requirement for employers, regardless of size, to offer paid sick leave during the pandemic to workers -- a change that the transition team said would extend the benefit to 106 million workers. Parents and family members caring for sick relatives or out-of-school children could receive more than 14 weeks of paid sick and family leave. The plan would provide benefits of as much as $1,400 per week and tax credits for employers with fewer than 500 employees to reimburse them for the cost of the leave.Tax Credits, ChildcareBiden would expand tax credits for low- and middle- income families and make them refundable for 2021. He is proposing to expand the child tax credit to $3,000 from $2,000 for each child 17 and younger. Children under age six would be eligible for $3,600.Biden is also requesting $25 billion for a stabilization fund to help open child-care centers and $15 billion in grants to support essential workers in meeting childcare costs.SchoolsThe plan is also calling for $170 billion to help schools to open -- something Biden has said would allow many parents, especially women, to rejoin the labor force after they dropped out to care for children learning at home.About $130 billion would go to K-12 schools to help them hire additional staff to reduce class size, modify spaces and purchase resources to help meet students’ academic and mental health needs. The plan would also direct $35 billion to colleges and universities and create a $5 billion fund for governors to direct help to schools most hard-hit by the virus.Rental AssistanceThe proposal would extend the eviction and foreclosure moratorium through September. It would also provide $30 billion to help low-income households who have lost jobs pay rent and utility bills. The plan would also provide $5 billion to states and localities to offer emergency housing for families facing homelessness.Small BusinessesBiden is proposing to leverage $35 billion in government funds into $175 billion in low-interest loans to finance small businesses. He is also calling for $15 billion in grants for such employers. He is proposing to use laid-off restaurant workers to partner with federal nutrition programs to get those employees working again.Source: Laura Davison, Bloomberg News

How much do scientists and researchers get paid?

I can give you some answers for scientists and researchers working for the public sector in Australia. At each dot-point, I’ll begin by stating the level, and then give the bottom of the annual salary range at that level at a few organisations as at 2018. Numbers (“level 4/5/6….”) refer to levels in federal government research organisations (in particular, CSIRO and the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS)) and letters (“level A/B/C…”) refer to levels in academia, at Australia universities. On top of the base salary, Australian universities generally pay 17% superannuation (i.e. contributions to a retirement fund) while government research organisations typically pay up to 14%. Australian workers, including academics, are usually entitled to four weeks of annual recreation leave plus sick leave and parental leave when needed and, eventually, long-service leave. AIMS employees get five weeks of recreation leave each year. Figures below are of course in Australian dollars (as I write this, 1 Australian dollar is worth 0.79 US dollars, 0.64 Euros or 51 Indian Rupees).Postdoctoral Research Associate / Associate Lecturer/ Level 4 / Level A(A newly graduated PhD working under the supervision of a more senior scientist)CSIRO: $83,487AIMS: $83,803UNSW: $91,743CDU: $81,523ANU: $86,646UniSA: $83,265Research Scientist / Lecturer / Level 5 / Level B(Usually a scientist with a few years of post-PhD experience, though in some high-demand fields, new PhDs may start here)CSIRO: $95,369AIMS: $101,601UNSW: $103,047CDU: $92,117ANU: $94,287UniSA: $94,085Senior Research Scientist / Senior Lecturer / Level 6 / Level C(A scientist with a few grants behind them and a well-established publication record and national reputation in their field.
