We’re encouraged by the positive response of students who, through this exercise, learned the importance of analytical and reflective writing, essential skills for college and career success, while thoughtfully engaging with a variety of artworks. Entries were judged by 24 college professors of art history and composition who read over 1,600 submitted essays from the U.S. and 43 other countries. They were impressed by the intelligence and passion shown by students in describing their engagement with great works of art. This year’s winner, selected by a panel of College Board and Atlantic staff, is Thanh Nguyen, a student at Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted in Hanoi, Vietnam. His essay — on School of Athens by Renaissance artist Raphael — stood out for his rich interpretation of the painting and his thoughtful and engaging description of its relevance to his life in contemporary Hanoi. For his accomplishment, Mr. Nguyen was recognized at [Opens in New Window]The Atlantic Education Summit in Washington, D.C., on May 17th. Of the thousands of poets who must have submitted to the contest — no doubt many of them adults much wiser and more skilled than me — my poem had been chosen to be featured in an exclusive, hardcover anthology! And honored on a something-karat-gold plaque!Of course, I had to pay $50 if I wanted to see my work in print in the anthology, and I had to pay another $100 if I wanted the plaque. Those were the only “prizes.”Even as a pre-teen, I sensed a scam.Sadly, not much has changed when it comes to companies trying to take advantage of writers who want a chance at recognition and maybe a little bit of money. Google the term “writing contests,” and you’ll come up with approximately 7.9 million results. It can be hard for a writer to know where to start looking for competitions, and how to tell if they’re legitimate or not.So I’ve done the legwork for you. Here are 29 reputable, well-reviewed, free writing contests for poets, fiction writers, essayists and more. Some legitimate contests do charge a small entry or “reading” fee, but often a fee can be a red flag for a scam, so you may want to stick to free writing contests — and there are certainly enough of them.Fiction and nonfiction writing contestsReady to share your novel or personal essay with the world? He lived in New Bedford and Nantucket. He became one of the most important Abolitionists and one of the most important figures in American history because he was an advocate and articulator of American freedom. Douglass’ 1845 autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, became a bestseller.Douglass’ oratorical skills were so impressive that some doubted that he had been a slave, so he wrote Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. During the Civil War he assisted in the recruiting of African-American men for the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Regiments and fought for the emancipation of slaves. After the war he worked to protect the rights of the freemen. He was secretary of the Santo Domingo Commission, marshall and recorder of deeds of the District of Columbia, and United States Minister to Haiti. His other autobiographical works are My Bondage And My Freedom and Life And Times Of Frederick Douglass, published in 1855 and 1881, respectively. He died in 1895.Nothing speaks to the dehumanizing impact of slavery and the accompanying deprivations than a human being not knowing their own birthday. His several autobiographies begin with this question about this basic fact of his life: “I was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, and about twelve miles from Easton, in Talbot county, Maryland. I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it.”Frederick Douglass was one of America’s great articulators of the meaning of freedom, and the importance of understanding our past. How do I write a term paper on a thesis about sugarcane with the title "cultivation of sugarcanes in my country"? Actually, I am more confused about what to write in the "discussion" part.

A term paper in secondary grades might be merely a matter of organizing and showing information about a subject. However a THESIS for graduation studies in history, economy or geography should generally attempt to interpret facts. You should probably have some theory about your subject. Why did sugarcane cultivation get started? What was the initial market? Were there patterns of growth of the industry, declines, ups and downs, and how did they reflect what was going on in government, international relations, economy, transportation, labor- - and how did sugar cultivation affect society. I recall a book I read 30 years ago called “The White Death”. No, it wasn’t cocaine, but sugar. The author argued that sugar played a part in slavery, convict labor and revolution. The model was modified from a commercialBachmann brand flatcar, with superstructure and parts added toresemble photographs from "Fort Bend County Sesquicentenniel1822-1972", a historical picture book. It is painted with thename of the Sugarland Railroad, although it is not known forcertain if the cars belonged to that railroad or to plantationsin the area. The photos were not clear enough to tell if therewas lettering on the cars. However, the lettering andappearance are typical of cars from 1900 to 1920.The model is a narrow guage car to match the BachmannBig Hauler train set. Narrow guage trains had a "gauge" ofthree feet-- the measurement between the insides of the rails. The Sugarland Railroad was standard gauge-- 4 feet 8 and a halfinches between the rails...and what remains of the SugarlandRoad is still that gauge. This car is part of a story that started before Texasjoined the union, and which continues to this day. When Stephen F. Austin brought settlers to Texas in1822, when it was part of Mexico, he brought along a man toserve as his secretary, writing up legal papers and deeds forland. All official papers had to be in Spanish in those days, and the secretary who handled them was a man named Samuel MayWilliams. As payment for his work, Williams was given a big parcelof land near Oyster Creek, not far east of the Brazos River.Williams called his land Oakland Plantation. In 1840, Williams started growing sugar cane. Sugarcane had already been grown in Louisiana for 30 years before, and in the West Indies islands-- Jamaica, Cuba, since shortlyafter the arrival of Columbus.Williams plantation was bought by two other men in 1853and they started calling the plantation "Sugarland". SoSugarland was the name of a plantation before there was any townthere. The area around Sugarland and Richmond was becoming arich farming area with big cash crops of sugar and cotton. Thefirst railroad in Texas was started to connect that area witha riverboat landing at Harrisburg. That railroad was called the"Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado". It is the railroad thatruns along the highway now in front of the Imperial Sugar plantin Sugarland. The same railroad also runs along Griggs Road andgoes past the home of Walter and Sara Anthony at Telephone andTooke Street. That railroad was joined to other railroads to run allthe way across Texas to El Paso and then across New Mexico andArizonato California and the Pacific Ocean. The Amtrak "SunsetLimited" passenger train which runs across the entire countryfrom Los Angeles to Houston to New Orleans to Miami runs on thatrailroad through Sugarland. As the first little railroad joinedwith other railroads, it changed names several times. It becametheGalveston Houston and San Antonio Railroad, then theTexas and New Orleans Railroad, and finally, part of theSouthern Pacific Railroad.By the time of the civil war, in the 1860s, there weremore than 35 small mills in the area grinding cane to produceraw sugar.Sugar cane is like a giant grass, with each blade aninch or two around and six to eight feet tall. Inside the caneis a pulp like soft wood. When the cane is fresh, it is wet andsweet inside. When I was a little boy, over 40 years ago, wekids used to buy a chunk of sugar cane at the corner store for afew pennies and chew it for the sweet taste. When sugar cane isripe, it can't wait a long time to be processed if the mostsugar and best quality sugar is going to be gotten out of it.The cane is ground up and crushed with heavy round stones andthen the juice that comes out of it is cooked to concentrate itand make raw sugar. This raw sugar may be a syrup or powder. Itis not like the white sugar that you see on the table for peopleto put into their coffee. It is more like "brown sugar" butwith more impurities. Once the sugar cane has been made intoraw sugar, the raw sugar will "keep" and can be shipped longdistances to a sugar refinery to be made into high qualityrefined white sugar. The reason there were so many small sugar mills was thatthe ripe harvested sugar cane could not wait very long or becarried very far to be milled. So the sugar cane car would only be used for shortdistances, from makeshift tracks built out into the fields a fewmiles to the nearest small mill.Hansen Browne, who is my uncle, and also the uncle ofyour grandmother, Nancy Hanks, says this kind of car wassometimes called a "bagasse" car. "Bagasse" is a French wordfrom Louisiana meaning cut and crushed stalks of cane or similarplant material. Hansen Browne used to work for the SouthernPacific Railroad shops in Houston, where he was in charge ofordering and storing material for building and repairingrailroad locomotives and cars. He is now retired. The sugar cane could be piled high in the car, overflowing the top, because it was lighter than other kinds ofthings carried in open railroad cars, such as rocks or coal oriron ore.Harvesting sugar cane took a lot of cheap labor. Beforethe civil war, sugar plantations owned Negro slaves to do thework. Slavery was outlawed after the war. But one of theplantation owners made a deal with the State of Texas to "lease"convicts to work the sugar fields. Convicts were brought to thesugar plantations and housed there. In the 1880s, private railroad tracks were built on anumber of plantations in the Sugarland area for hauling caneshort distances. In 1890, the big Imperial Sugar refinery was started.Unlike the small cane crushing mills located on or near theplantations, the Imperial plant made raw sugar into fine purewhite table sugar. It started refining the raw sugar from anumber of small mills and plantations in the area.In 1893, a number of small plantation railroad trackswere joined together and chartered as a regular railroad, theSugarland Railroad, to run between the Imperial Sugar plant anda connection with the Santa Fe Railroad, and the Internationaland Great Northern 14 miles away. The short line gave ImperialSugar the choice of shipping by the Southern Pacific Railroad, which runs right by the plant, or by the other two trunk linerailroads. In 1902, Imperial Sugar started refining raw sugar fromthe West Indies, as well as raw sugar from the nearby farms andmills. The foreign raw sugar came into Texas through the portof Galveston, was carried by train to Sugarland and then therefined sugar was carried from Sugarland by railroads to thecities and stores where it was sold.In the 1920s, sugar cane growing faded out in theSugarland area, partly because of prices, cost of hiringworkers, plant diseases, and changes in regulation and taxing offoreign sugar. Sugar growing stopped. But the Imperial Sugarplant at Sugarland stayed in business, refining sugar from otherplaces, mostly from the West Indies, from Mexico and fromHawaii. The Texas prison system stopped the practice of"leasing" groups of convicts out as farm workers, and theprisons bought land for their own farms in the areas whereprisoners had been leased on sugar plantations. Some of theformer sugar plantation lands became prison farms in theSugarland and Angleton and Rosharon areas. The International and Great Northern Railroad, one ofthe connections of the Sugarland Railroad, was merged into theMissouri Pacific, and then the Missouri Pacific bought theSugarland Railroad and operated it as a branch, using it to shipcars to and from the Imperial Sugar Company. There was smallrailroad yard just west of the sugar plant as a terminal for theend of the branch line. The Sugarland Railroad, or Sugarland "branch" used torun across Highway 90 and across the Southern Pacific Railroadjust east of the Imperial Sugar plant. In the 1950s, there wasa highway improvement project on Highway 90. It would have beenvery expensive to make a safer crossing. Since there was onlyone train a day going to and from the sugar plant, it wasdecided to cut off the railroad where it crossed the highway. Most of the track of the Sugarland Railroad was abandoned orpulled up, leaving only the yard. The Missouri Pacific, or"Mo-Pac" made an arrangement with the Southern Pacific Railroadfor what are called "trackage rights". The Mo-Pac would run itstrains from a yard in Houston onto Southern Pacific tracks, andrun over the S.P. main line until it got to Sugarland. There iswould switch off the S.P. and run into the Mo-Pac yard. So theMo-Pac had a railroad yard in Sugarland without having their ownline to get to it.About 1980, the Union Pacific Railroad bought the Mo-Pacand merged Mo-Pac into Union Pacific. The yard at Sugarlandremains, and to this day, Union Pacific trains run over the S.P.to take cars to Sugarland and pick up cars going out fromthere.

It's a great software to create files in PDF format, from any other software. Works perfectly with the software that I use. Easy to create the files. Works like a printer, just is like a digital printer.
