Why do we use multiple choice questions?

When I first became a faculty member at a medical school, I was horrified to see that the exams were all multiple choice. I thought MCQs were a cheap and inferior way to test.Of course this is true for bad questions, but I have learned that a well constructed MCQ has advantages over an essay question. A typical good question in medical education involves a fairly lengthy “stem,” describing a clinical case to diagnosis. and then 5 answer choices.Suppose 5 pieces of clinical information are provided that include signs, symptoms, and lab tests. The final sentence of a biochemistry MCQ might be, “What is the most likely enzyme deficiency to explain this disorder?”Notice the key phrase “most likely.” All MCQs come with the instruction to pick the “best answer.”A well constructed set of five answer choices for this question would all seem plausible, but only one of them is consistent with all five pieces of data. The others can explain only part of the data.If this were an essay question, a student might jump to a conclusion and pick an enzyme deficiency that explains four of the five pieces of data, without considering other options. The grader would be forced to give partial credit. But if the student is forced to choose between many possibilities, the job of picking the right answer becomes more difficult and I think a better test of knowledge. For instructors who still object to MCQs, you can always require the students to explain their choice of answer.

Any experiences with nimitta or omens in astrological consultations and predictions?

Omens ( Auspiscious or Inauspiscious happenings in environment) are clubbed in astrology and Shakun Shaastra is a part of astrology .The planetary astrology is based on mathematical calculations and that throws many possibilities like in a multiple choice type questions and astrologer is confronted with choosing most likely one from those options and tell the client . Here the omens come to the rescue of the astrologer . If astrologer is not aware of those omens , his calculations and selecting one of the theoretical results can totally go wrong .If astrological chart is like pathological blood test report , then omens are like the practical symptoms of the disease. For example , a person can get a wrong blood sugar report because of typing error which shows that patient has no diabetes but practically he has all symptoms of diabetes so symptoms will prevail over blood sugar report .Not every one may be well versed in planetary astrology as that will require , calculator , software , planet degrees , ephemeris and then an expert astrologer to interpret them as per classical text and then find out the possibilities. That becomes a task similar to an MBBS doctor’s work while an experienced nurse can declare and diagnose the diseases correctly in many cases , just by observing symptoms by her experience and that is like omens based predictions .That is why, every old religious text in Hinduism , Buddhism , Jainism , Islam and Christianity has plenty of omens based predictions .The most famous modern book which has a story based on Omens is THE ALCHEMIST by Paulo Coelho, the famous Brazilian author and I think every astrologer should read it .Problem with omens is that you can observe them only when you are at peace with yourself, so it is not cup of tea for everyone . It is based on intuition and unless you are pure hearted , you will not be able to observe, interpret and act on them .Omens are used mostly in horary ( prashna astrology ) . I remember one story on omens .Once an astrologer was teaching astrology to his disciples . Then a farmer came to consult the astrologer . The farmer said that his wife had eloped with a person from other village few months back . He wanted to know whether his wife would return or not . Before astrologer could take up the question , astrologer’s wife entered the classroom and told her husband that while pulling water from well , the bucket rope got snapped and bucket fell into the well .Astrologer had to leave the class to retrieve the bucket but he instructed to his students to apply omens theory to answer the farmer’s question with horary chart .After astrologer Guru came back , he asked the students to answer . Most students answered that since bucket had fallen into well, so farmer’s wife will not return . But most intelligent student , after matching it with Prashna chart , said that farmer’s wife should return back soon .He explained that water in the bucket , which was being separated from the rest of well water had so strong pull , that it broke the rope and the water in bucket went back to where it belonged . So farmer’s wife should return to farmer to whom she legally and socially belong . Also the bucket has also been retrieved by husband astrologer .The Guru agreed with this explanation .So, sometimes , even without any chart or calculations , omens are strong enough to dictate future outcome . I have myself done many such predictions based on omens and always use them wherever possible . The Alchemist book also supports this theory . Ignoring omens means ignoring great hints given by environment for accurate predictions .

Are there any tips and tricks for IELTS Reading?

Hi !Reading and writing are considered as tough sections as compared to listening and speaking. In order to score well in the reading section one needs to know it well. Let’s get acquainted with IELTS reading !This test is designed to assess a wide range of reading skills, including how well youunderstand the general sense of a passageunderstand the main ideasunderstand some specific detailsunderstand inferences and implied meaningrecognise a writer’s opinions, attitudes, and purpose.IELTS READING QUESTION TYPESAll reading questions can be divided into 5 distinct categories :1. Completion tasks: You will be asked to fill in a sentence or a part of it with some missing information.• Complete the flow chart.• Complete the sentences.• Complete the notes.• Complete the table.• Complete the summary using list of words.• Complete the summary.• Label the diagram.2. Answering Questions: You have to give a short answer to a question. Word limit for the same will be mentioned.3. Multiple choice: You will be given a statement and several options to choose from; you have to choose either the correct answer or some statements that describe something you are asked about.• Choose the correct letter, A,B,C or D.• Choose X number of statements that are true for something.4. True/False/Not given or Yes/No/Not given: Here the task speaks for itself.• Identify if the statements are true, false or not given.• Identify if the statements agree with the claims of the writer: yes, no or not given.5. Matching tasks: Again, here the task speaks for itself.• Match each statement with the correct person/date or something else.• Match the person with the statement.• Match each statement with the correct ending.• Match each statement with the paragraph.• Choose the correct heading for each paragraph from the list of headings (I absolutely hate these ones!)Let’s get started with tips and tricks to solve the testHow to save time and get more correct answers ?You should always find and circle the KEYWORD(s) in statements or in the questions.• What are keywords ?These are the words that fully reflect the meaning of the statement. No matter how long the statement is, there may be one or two words that will present the meaning of the whole statement . Find these words and circle them. Try to mark as few words as possible because if you circle every second, all of them will dance before your eyes, and you won’t be able to concentrate.• How will this strategy will help you ?If you don’t have extraordinary talents, like all normal people, you will not remember the meaning of each statement. While doing a reading test, you will have to read each statement several times. If you don’t, how will you know what information to look for ? If you circle keywords in statements , you’ll just need to look at those keywords or their synonyms, which will take a second to recall what the statement was about.• Is there just one keyword in a statement ?You’re lucky if you can circle just one keyword, but usually this won’t be enough. You should circle 2 keywords in order to avoid confusion.Always remember solving this section is not the problem, but solving it in 60 minutes is surely is !Here are some important tips and tricks to solve every type of reading question:1. True, false or not given/ yes, no or not given :Instructions:Start with reading the questions first.Identify a keyword or keywords in the questions.Read the passage and find the sentence containing these keywords or their synonyms.Compare this sentence with the statement in order to decide if it’s true, false or not given. Some very important things to remember here:Never write short forms. DON’T write T, F, NG for True, false or not given respectively.Remember to read the question very carefully. Read carefully what the question is asking for. Don’t write true, false or not given in place of yes, no or not given and vice versa. They are not the same. Yes, there’s a difference! When the statements are about facts in the passage, you'll be asked to decide whether the information is "true, false or not given". While in the “Yes/No/Not given” questions, you are asked to look for the writer's claims rather than the actual information .There’s a difference between making assumptions and using common sense. Don’t make assumptions. Read the information or the claim and answer the questions. These questions always come in order.Write true if the question statement agrees with the information given in thepassage.Write false if the question statement contradicts the information given in the passage. When the information from the question in not mentioned in the passage at all ,or some important part of the information is missing, mark it as not given.2. Which paragraphs contain the following information.Instructions:Read the question statement and circle the keywords.Read the paragraphs given A,B,C etc. Read the whole paragraph if it’s short, or read first four and last four lines if it’s a long one.Choose the paragraph which has the same idea as information given in the question.3. Complete the notes or complete the summary using words from the box/list.Instructions:These questions are the easiest out of all. Always circle the word limit given in the question.Read the question statement, but don’t read the words given in the box/list. Try to find the idea of the statement in the paragraph. Now look at the given options.Choose the option that fits the best. If no options are given, focus on the word before and after the blank.Don’t try to match words in the question with exactly the same words in the reading text. Instead, you should be looking for words that mean the same thing i.e. paraphrases and synonyms. The answers appear in the same order as the questions. The answer to number 1 will be above number 2, and the answer to number 3 will be below the answer to number 2.Remember that your answer should be grammatically correct. Check the type of word. Is it a verb, noun, adjective or adverb ? This will help you answer the question correctly.4. Choose the correct letter, A,B,C or D.Instructions:Read the question, but DON’T read answer choices A,B,C or D. We call it the DON’T LOOK DOWN technique.Identify keyword or keywords in the question.Read the passage.Find the sentence containing the same keywords as you circled in the question, or their synonyms.Try to figure out what the main idea of the sentence is.Start reading the answer choices (A,B,C,D) one by one; each time circle a keyword and choose the one which has same main idea as the sentence in the reading passage.Mark your answer.5. Match each statement with the correct person or date/ Match the person or date with the statement.Instructions:Scan the text until you see the name or date.Check if this name is on the list of answer choices A,B,C etc.; if no, continue scanning. If yes, read the text to find out what this person says; try to understand the main idea of his or her message.Compare this idea with each statement and choose the one which has the same idea as the message in the text but is written in other words.Write the letter which refers to this person (A,B,C, etc) next to this statement given.6. Choose the correct heading for paragraphs or match each statement with theparagraph.Instructions:Read the whole paragraph if it’s short, or read first four and last four lines if it’s a long one.Identify some meaningful points or ideas.Read the headings one by one and each time compare the idea that this heading has with the main points of the paragraph. This is known as elimination.Choose the heading which has the same idea as some sentence (or rarely several sentences) in the reading passage, but is written in other words. Some hacks you need to know to survive IELTS:Be sure to carefully read and follow the instructions in this section of IELTS.Pay attention to the number of words you can use in your answer. For example, you can use one word AND a number. A similar version is one word AND/OR a number. This means several options are possible depending on the questions. 1. One number (eg. 2)2. One number and/or one word ( 2 chairs/ 2/ chairs) 3. One word ( chairs )Make sure you don’t overlook the following phrase “ You may use any letter more than once”. NB : This is an abbreviation for the latin phrase NOTA BENE, which means note well.Hyphenated words count as one word, for example, mother-in-law.All articles and prepositions are included in the word limit. For example, on the chair (3 words).A contracted title or surname count as one word. For example, Dr. Walter.Leave difficult questions for the end: If you spend a lot of time on questions that you find difficult, you’ll be wasting valuable exam time. You won’t be able to answer all the easier questions and you’ll lose points! If you don’t know the right answers to some questions, leave them and move on. This way, you can focus on all the questions you do know the answers to. You can return to the difficult questions at the end if you have the time.Even if you don’t know the answer, make sure you attempt every question. You might get lucky and you have nothing to lose.Remember that this isn’t a vocabulary test: Don’t panic if you come across unknown words. Try to understand the overall idea of the text. You can understand the meaning of a sentence or paragraph even if you don’t know every single word !There’s only one way to do this and there’s no hiding from it. The more you read, the better and faster you get at reading. Also, keep reading novels and articles. General reading helps ! A lot ! Make sure you practice at least 60 sets of reading before appearing for the exam. The more you read the more stronger your interpretation gets. All the best :)

Comments from Our Customers

Downloaded software, did not work. Refused to refund money. Disputed on PayPal, they declined, then charged me again, a year later for something I do not have. Disputed for a full refund, waiting for reply again. Do not recommend any software purchases as they do not stand behind it or reply to requests. Worst software company I have dealt with in my life, and very poor management.
