PDF Editor FAQ

Will San Jose State University accept transfer students from other nearby Bay Area community colleges? I will attend Ohlone College next year in Fremont.

Yes, you can go to your transfer center at Ohlone. And you can also read Welcome to ASSIST for transferrable courses to the major, as well as read the IGETC requirements for general education. You should focus on your major pre-requisites at Ohlone, take the general education by area and specific courses that are offered, and prepare your transfer application with a good purpose statement. You apply to any college at CSU or any college at UC, so you may want to focus on how your application meets the needs of that college in each system, as well as knowing your major and if it is offered at that college. You don’t need to know much about the colleges on each CSU or UC campus, unless you are investing in that university and want to know more about the academic categorization of disciplines, departments, and resources.

What was your final grade the first time you took calculus?

I took 4 courses in calculus. The first was Calculus with Applications - 1st Course. I received an A- there. That was on differential calculus in a single variable, which included limits, basic graphs, deriving functions and polynomials. The second was Calculus with Applications - 2nd Course. I received an F the first time when I stopped going to class and decided I would retake it. I took it during summer that year and received an A. That was on integral calculus in a single variable, integrating functions and polynomials, basic graphs. The third course was Calculus, and I received an A. It was on sequences and series, and infinite sequences and infinite series, and some multivariable calculus. The fourth was Multivariable Calculus with Analytic Geometry. I received an A there. It was on multiple integration or integrating 2–3 variables, analytic geometry, working with surfaces and volumes, partial differentiation in 2–3 variables, and vectors used in differentiation or integration. It also included some work in mechanics, working with objects or projectiles, and interpreting position, velocity, and acceleration. These courses were taken at UC Santa Barbara for the 1st and 2nd, De Anza College for the 3rd, and Ohlone College for the 4th. These are all public schools, the first in the University of California, and the latter in the California Community Colleges. I have never considered myself particularly great at calculus reasoned in theorems and proofs, and more focused on the computations and concepts we are studying. If a part of a course I would be able to start reading the formalism of a theorem and proof and seeking to articulate it myself, though that has never been called from me. My multivariable calculus teacher wrote in my recommendation letter that he believed I could pursue or complete a PhD degree if I wanted, if that was my desire.

How competitive is respiratory therapy at a 2-year college?

I can’t say for certain about other programs, but the program I got accepted to at Ohlone college in Fremont, CA was pretty competitive to get into. I was super lucky in that while I did qualify in terms of grades and prereqs, there were only about 24 spots or thereabouts, and there were at least double or more that many applicants. I was able to get in because a couple of applicants who got accepted withdrew at the last second. The program itself was pretty intense too, very little time to go out and relax. I would compare it to spending 2 years at sea in that in order to make all the necessary time for studying you will have almost no time for friends and family unless you’re exceptionally good at managing your time. It’s only been a year since I graduated so I don’t think The standards have changed, but the passing grade for almost all the courses is a high C. The director of my program went into say that while you should always try to do the best you can in the program, some of the best therapists he saw go through his program ended up being C average students in his program. During the course of the program we did have a couple dropouts as well who tried to come back in later semesters to finish up the program.
