During my college years, I grew tight with my then roommate. He was a couple years old than me and I did seek for his advice on a few matters. To put it in a better perspective, there were 6 of us in a house and we were all students. Both of us became close and one day, I introduced my classmate to him. They hit it off and became a couple few weeks later. I was cool with it. That was the purpose of me introducing the girl to him anyway.Then a few months later, I got a gf myself and my roommate and I hung out less after that. For some reason, his gf didn’t mesh well with other housemates and my gf did. Since both our gfs stays in the same house a lot of the time, I felt it would be fair to share the utilities equally among us. I offered to pay the part of my gf and it is up to him to do what he wants. He didn’t pay for his gf and we just left it at that. As time goes, animosity grew between us and my roommate and his gf. Habits and little things start to accumulate. Things such as them not cleaning the kitchen after cooking, extended time showering together in the shared bathroom hence hogging precious bathroom time in the morning, etc. etc. Things got bad after a while and arguments broke out and everybody made it clear that his gf needs to leave the place and help keep the place clean. Unfortunately I was put in a position where I had to take sides and I leaned away from my roommate and his gf. This pissed him off and we are not in good terms after that.Money was tight as we were all students and my roommate took a part time job in Carrefour. He works as a cashier and one day, he came back with all kinds of groceries and CD sets which I’m sure he can’t afford to buy. Later, we found out he got his gf to go buy all these stuff and queue on his lane and he would just pretend to scan the items.I minded my own business and when the time comes to end the lease, my roommate decides to leave the house. Few weeks after he left, the phone bill arrived and that asshole racked up the phone bill making international calls and the bill is under my name. I got stuck paying for it.With that wound on my back, I decided to call Carrefour and gave Carrefour the details of my roommate and informed them of their Modus Operandi.Called Carrefour back a few weeks later and the manager got on the phone and told me they caught him red handed. They thanked me and told me he managed to get his family to wire him some money and pleaded to let him go, which unfortunately, Carrefour did let him go and terminated his employment.

The biggest threat to American freedom of speech is the narrow concept of freedom held by most Americans.To most Americans, "freedom" means "freedom from government interference". Now, that's a very valuable kind of freedom, one that Americans should feel lucky to have and one that Americans should defend vigorously.But having freedom from government interference doesn't mean you shouldn't be concerned about other kinds of freedom. Most conservatives totally fail to recognize this. Many liberals recognize this but apply it inconsistently. They realize that the citizen trapped in generational poverty has limited freedom. What they don't see is that citizens who must censor themselves to avoid massive backlash that destroys their social and economic lives are likewise not free.Educated Americans such as many popular Quora writers love to say, "freedom of speech only means the government can't punish you for your speech, it doesn't mean you can say whatever you want without consequences". These educated Americans pat themselves on the back for using this thought-terminating cliché. This is the biggest threat to freedom of speech in the USA in 2015.The very notion that negative consequences do not reduce your freedom is laughable. If every employer refuses to hire you on account of your religion, how could anyone say that you have religious freedom? And if every employer refuses to hire you on account of an insensitive remark you once made on social media, how could anyone say that you have freedom of speech?For those of you who would construct a strawman, please note that I'm not saying employers should be obligated to hire candidates who make insensitive remarks. My point is that freedom is partially determined by the social environment rather than being entirely determined by law. Few laws in the United States encroach upon freedom of speech. Conversely, Americans are also empowered to expand or contract freedom of speech in the United States without writing or repealing a single law.Americans who insist on doling out vigilante justice to people who express the "wrong" views, including in many cases phoning or emailing their otherwise employers and pressuring them to fire the "offender", threaten freedom of speech. Americans who gleefully plaster the offender's name all over the Internet in an effort to extrajudicially ostracize them from American society threaten freedom of speech. As much as Americans love to congratulate themselves for how much legal freedom of speech they have, they are second to none (or perhaps second only to Canadians) in their zeal for destroying social and economic freedom of speech.If this post makes you angry about what's happening to the United States... good.
