There are anachronisms at every level:Archeological: There is zero evidence of what are now basic “barnyard animals" in the Americas prior to their introduction by Europeans, but BoM describes them as being abundant. BoM also describes mass production of iron and steel in the Americas by people who left Jerusalem in about 590 BC. Steel was unknown at that time, and no civilization has ever lost the skill to make iron after having acquired it, yet no on in the Americas got further than bronze before the European arrival. “Nephi" complains that they cannot hunt (apparently in Arabia) because the steel for their bows is broken, but metal bows, in the form of crossbows, were a medieval invention. Weapons described include scimitars (invariably misspelled), also medieval. Finally, remains of the cities described are nonexistant.Genetic: Modern genetic studies clearly show that American Indians are descended from Oriental Siberians, not ancient Hebrews.Literary: The literary style is a basic 19th century American. That is obvious even to me, and I am no English major. Also, the writing style is identical throughout books that supposedly had different authors over a span of 1,000 years. Individual quirks and follies that are found throughout the Bible are absent. The “authors" complain about having limited room to write on the “gold plates,” yet about half of it (at least) is verbal “padding" (all in Smith's idea of King James English). And the theology is mostly standard 19th century American Evangelicalism (the squirrelly stuff in Mormonism was from Smith's later writings). The actual theological verbiage is taken directly (often word for word) from an 18th century King James Version of the Bible (including translation errors that were corrected in later KJV editions).Cultural: The BoM describes the creation of a Republican form of government virtually identical to the 19th century US, and describes concepts of personal freedom designed to resonate with Americans. These concepts were unknown in 590 BC. Also, “Nephi" balks at God's direct order to kill a man due to his regard for the sanctity of human life. That concept was very much a part of 19th century America, but in 590 BC it did not exist.Linguistic: Smith claimed the (nonexistent) “gold plates" were written in “Reformed Egyptian,” a language that never existed. An incredibly gullible man named Harris got Smith to give him a sample of what “Reformed Egyptian” looked like, and he took it to a history professor. In later years that professor described the writing as a random collection of symbols from multiple unrelated ancient languages, plus some reversed English letters.Corrections: Smith dictated the whole mess, and kept obviously having to correct mistakes (such as naming Jesus, “Christiams,” etc. centuries before Jesus' birth). And the Mormon Church has made 6,000 to 10,000 (depending who is counting) “corrections" in the BoM (and then they have the gall to brag about how self-consistant it is).The BoM is an amalgam of View of the Hebrews, 1823, by Ethan Smith (no relation to Joseph Smith, Jr.), an unfinished book called Manuscript Found by Solomon Spalding and the aforementioned 18th century KJV Bible, put together by a convicted con man.
