This was one of the best interview experiences I ever had. I had two Interviews on two consecutive days. One was for NEW IIMs (CAP Process) and the other for a top B-School in the country.In the first interview, there were two panelists. Both were full-blooded professionals. After 20 minutes of smooth interview, one(P1) of the interviewers had taken out a cigarette from a pack of ten cigarettes and started smoking. I was astonished.P1 - Do you smoke?Me - No sir. I hate smoking.P2 - Oh C'mon buddy, don't lie.Me - Astonished..No sir, I don't smoke.P1 - Okay, That's absolutely fine. No issue.P2 - So, Saurabh. I have 10 cigarettes in this packet. After picking up one , I will be left with only nine. Is it fine?Me- Yes, sir.P2 - Now, you have to make them 10 again. How could you do it? You have to accomplish it by staying here only and you have no other option.Me - Hmmm.....Sir please let me think.After two minutes of continuous thinking, I had not come to any conclusion. I was wondering how could one make them 10 again?I asked another interviewer whether he had another packet. He replied that he had none.After three more minutes, I asked the P1 to give me the packet he had. He was surprised by my confidence but nevertheless gave it to me.Then, I spread all cigarettes on the table and started forming a random pattern, but was unable to strike upon a solution.For illustration, I have shown the matchsticks here in place of cigarettes .I arranged all the nine cigarettes like this.Me- Sir, What you think? Will I be able to solve it or not?P2- Your confidence indicates that you could do it?Both of us started laughing...Then after five to six trials, I was able to form a pattern as below and solved it.Controlling my emotions, I looked at their faces.P1 and P2 looked at each other and started laughing.Yes! Finally, you accomplished the task.You are the only candidate among the 15 who was able to do it.I smiled and thanked them a lot for their compliment and told them my lucky number was also 10. They started laughing again.After that, they asked me two to three more questions regarding my personal life, family etc.But, it was a wonderful experience that I would like to cherish for a long time.Verdict- Selected, but didn’t join.P.S- Can’t disclose the name of the Institute because of obvious reason.Thanks a lot guys for your upvotes. Also I want to make it clear that you have to utilize all 9 cigarettes to accomplish this task.Many are saying that if you break one cigarette into two parts then also it will become 10. Absolutely not, Still it will remain 9.

This happened with me during the 2nd round of interview with a top E-Commerce Giant. They were interviewing at my college for Software Engineer Role.After asking a lot of technical questions-Interviewer: You have a sheet of paper. As you can see there are two surfaces on it. You are locked in a room and have NOTHING with you. Convert this 2 surface sheet into a single surface.Me: I will paste in on the floor, then there will be only one surface.Interviewer: But you dont have any glue to paste it.Me: I will roll it in the form of a cylinder.Interviewer: But then there are 3 surfaces (top, bottom and lateral).Me: A sphere has a single surface. What if I make a sphere out of the sheet?Interviewer: But how will you make a sphere when you dont have anything with you?After thinking for about 5 seconds. I picked up the sheet and made a paper ball out of it. Just like this:​​​​​The Interviewer gave me thumbs up and said that is what he was looking for. Then he proceeded with some more technical questions and puzzles.Final result: Selected!Edit 1:A lot of people are suggesting that mobius strips is also an answer. It is a correct answer, but making a paper ball out of the sheet was much easier than making a mobius strip. Atleast you dont have to lick the paper during an interview.

“Why didn’t you submit my confession to your confessions page?”In the final moments of my interview during placements at IIT Bombay, I was asked this by one fairly senior member (and IIT B alumnus) of the prestigious firm I was interviewing with.For a bit of context - I had started a page called IITB Confessions that at its peak had 10,000 likes and more than a million hits in literally 4 days. It definitely went viral, and I had setup a Google form to submit “confessions” which I used to vet, make funny and anonymize people’s submissions. Few people knew I was the admin, and my “great reveal” happened post placements.Given that I felt it was a big deal, I had put it in my interests section, and it literally was the third last line of my CV. When I was asked this question - I was stumped. Was this a trick question?As I collected myself, I almost reflexively said “Posts were chosen purely on the basis of merit and quality, and there was no bias in the selection process”. I have no idea why I said this, though this was probably what I had been hearing during the entire placement process, when each firm informally described their own selection process. The mind has strange ways of working.The interviewer stared back at me, and for 30 seconds my heart was in my mouth. Had I insulted him? He soon began to laugh and said “Haha, I’m sure it was quite a terrible submission”.I was hired.
