In the aftermath of the deadly 26/11 Mumbai Attacks , a need was felt to raise Specialized Local Units to combat terrorism and crime , modelled on similar lines as the popular Western Concept of Special Weapons and Tactics Units aka SWAT. Thus various SWAT and Commando Units were raised in almost every state of India , modelled on similar lines as the Western concept of SWAT and were imparted training and equipment knowledge by Army and NSG in the process.Uttar Pradesh Police SWATThese local units are trained to combat terrorism , extremism , crime and handle typical situations like Hostage Rescue and Room Clearing Jobs where they can storm terrorists and armed groups safe houses independently without involving Army or NSG at upper levels who would take longer to arrive.Maharashtra Police has its own dedicated SWAT unit named Force One which is deployed in all major cities of Maharashtra. During the Bosnian War, my unit was engaged in a battle near the town of Mrkonjić Grad. We were told that the paramilitary Serb Volunteer Guard commanded by a criminal named Željko Ražnatović (nicknamed Arkan) was fighting on the other side.However, we never came close to Arkan’s so-called “Tigers”. Later, the Croats brought in another brigade from Croatia to help us. This one was the 1. Guards Brigade (Croatian Army), the so-called Croatian “Tigers”.I remember that some journalists mentioned the fact that on both sides a unit named “Tigers” was fighting. They called it “tigers against tigers”.My unit during an operation near Mrkonjić Grad. I’m the guy sitting on the right.The battle ended with a decisive Croatian victory. Arkan admitted on Serb television that he had lost more than eighty soldiers. They are called Ghatak commandos. Based on army's profile, ITBP units are similar to infantry battalions. All units have their special course qualified commandos which are trained a Mussoorie. ITBP commandos are the only one who are also recognised by Army.
