FOR A BEGINNER, Consider a second-hand radial arm saw.FOR A PRO, Consider a new one.(Maybe a band-saw, or table-saw).Why a radial arm saw?They are very versatile and fun to learn and use.If you are a beginner you may be reluctant to spend too much money, and possibly not have a great deal of storage room for various types of machines, so consider second hand.Radial arm saws can be stored and operated against walls. (Not in the middle of floor space)It can do anything a good saw should, and safely. Although the reasons for a guard are obvious. A riving knife is a big must, on any saw.If you see the need for a track saw or table saw later, the radial arm saw will still be an asset in any wood-shop, even if it just used for a docking saw.For a woodworker, a band saw opens up a lot more of project opportunities, and like the radial arm saw it can be used as a stand-alone sawing machine, without the other machines I have mentioned. And again if you see the need for other machines, the band saw will unlikely become obsolete either.unless you intend to make predominantly projects that involve a lot of curved cutting, as in toys, I would suggest you obtain the radial arm saw first, as it cuts straight and clean.If you have room for a table saw, then this is the most popular type of saw to buy, particularly for smaller projects. However remember never take the safety equipment, (guard and riving knife) off the machine as a huge amount of people do. The most popular way people cut wood to size is with a pencil mark. Unfortunately with table saws, it is difficult to see the mark because it is obstructed by the safety equipment.If you are going to use this type of saw, never remove the safety equipment to replace it with a homemade sled, to solve the problems. They are generally inaccurate and dangerous.If you need to do some trenching with a table saw you have no choice but to remove both the guard and riving knife, so do not neglect to refit them when you are finished. (Yes I know it is a fiddly cramped long process with Allan keys)You do not have these problems with radial arm or docking saws.But!…Keep in mind all saws need dust extraction, and this particularly applies to radial arm saws when ripping. As the vision of what you are doing, while rip cutting, and trenching, is an advantage, the radial arm saw throws sawdust upward, Yes, in your face and all over you, This problem does not occur with cross-cutting as the saw throws it downward.This is the only downside of a radial arm saw. So use the riving knife, (always down hard on the bench) and a vacuum cleaner type dust extraction unit.Cross-cutting. (In answer to what is the best kit for woodwork.One of the the best professional and semi professional woodworking power tool systems I have come across would be, the Festool power tool and accessory range.Festool utilize their power tools, with accessories, effectively turning them into innovative woodworking machinery.Although, Festool equipment is expensive they have the reputation of quality, and well suited for small workshops, and if you have to work on site, you can take portable set ups with you. You cannot do this with normal machinery. The other part of the value equation is their machines take up less area in a work space, in particular the track saw system used for cutting down large sheets to smaller sizes.Examples of their equipment.Track saw.Cutting large sheets clean and accurate is always a problem for small underfunded workshops. (See update at bottom of the page).The best hand and power tools you need in woodwork, depends on what you are building, how you you want to make it, what materials you intend to use, how much can you spend, and what expertise you have to produce it.The more you do and learn about woodwork, the more you can make decisions on what to include in your kit.That said its probably not good to overthink it, and just buy it and get started. (And maybe not, see update at bottom of page).If you do desire to think it out more you could work out your own best kit by searching with Google images.I will get you started by giving you a link to Google search images with a search I think might be appropriate.
