PDF Editor FAQ

What are common scams in India?

Scams by Insurance AgentsMy late father was a Property Valuer with a leading private bank. And the bank was also a Corporate Agent for a leading Life Insurance Company. The Bank Manager, saddled with target for selling insurance policies, canvassed my father for a Pension Plan in the guise of enrolling him for a health insurance policy. The Bank manager sent an Agent to our home, and my father trusting the Agent and the Bank Manager signed on the blank Proposal form. (A costly mistake). Now comes the major part of the story. When my father passed away in 2013, we realised how the Agent had tampered with information, and committed forgery on an unsuspecting senior citizen.1) The Nominee entered by the Agent in the Proposal form was my late Grand Father. Remember, the policy was taken by my father in 2010, and my Grand Father expired in 2004. Do you know how the Agent got my Grand Father’s name? He checked my father’s Electoral ID Card, from which he got my Grand Father’s name. He never bothered to cross check whether my Grand father was alive or not. Neither did he bother to ask my father as to whom he wished to nominate. (I don’t think that my educated father would have been so foolish to nominate an already deceased person as his nominee.)2) The address entered in the Proposal form, including the Pin Code, was incorrect. This was done deliberately to make sure that the original policy document remained undelivered. The letter to me from the Courier Company clearly mentioned that the consignment containing the original policy document was returned to the Insurance Company, as the address mentioned on the envelope ( and policy document) was incorrect3) The phone number mentioned in the proposal form did not belongto my father either. This was also done deliberately to avoid anytele-calling verification from the Insurance Company’s Call centre. (If my father had got a call, he would have understood that he had been taken for a ride)4) The Date of Birth of my father entered was completelyincorrect. If the original age had been entered, he would have been very close to the maximum age possible to take the policy. This too was done deliberately. Otherwise, the Agent might have lost his sales.5) Further, the signatures on the copy of the address proof and the Benefit Illustration were forged. This was done with deliberate intentions to avoid my father ever coming to know that the policy sold was a Unit Linked one.I explained the matter to the Asst Commissioner of Police. He told me that it would be better if I file a case in the Court. I then approached the City Police Commissioner. He was of the view that I was wasting his precious time, and asked me to file a complaint with the local police station.I approached the Insurance Ombudsman. One of the officials in the Ombudsman’s office, after going through the records, opined that I should approach the Civil Court (as it was a case of cheating). He also told me that such cases are usually won by Insurance Companies in Ombudsman forum. We wrote multiple times to the Insurance Company and the bank, IRDA, Finance Ministry, logged a call in Integrated Grievance Management facility of IRDA. We even wrote to Rashtrapathi Bhavan’s helpline. Everything was in vain. Finally, we collected whatever the company gave us. We were already tired, and didn’t want the fight to prolong further. (Leave alone the interest for what my father paid as premium, the death claim amount the company gave us was much less than what he had paid.)So, for all of you who wish to take Life Insurance policies, I have a few suggestions:1) Don’t make others fill your Proposal form. DIY (Do It Yourself)2) Don’t leave any column blank. And fill every column properly. Take your time to fill the Proposal form. The skies won’t fall if you take a day more to complete the Proposal form. Remember, the Agent can fill in anything in those blank columns. If the Agent says that he’ll fill the Proposal form later, and asks you to just sign on the form, politely ask him to shut up.3) If you don’t understand a few clauses or terminologies, research on the web, or ask your friends or well-wishers. Don’t trust what the Agent says.4) The Agent will force you not to disclose your medical history. Listening to this crap might even lead to repudiation of your death claim. When you pass away, do you want your spouse to run from pillar to post to get your death claim? So, fill the Proposal form honestly. Honesty is the best policy, always5) Once the policy has been issued, collect the Policy document. If you don’t receive the document, follow up for the document. Rest only after you receive it6) Once you receive the Policy document, go through it properly. Insurance Companies are mandated to send you printouts of your signed Application form and Benefit Illustration. Usually, they attach them along with the original Policy document.7) If you find anything amiss, please go ahead and cancel the policy under ‘free look period’. To know more about ‘free look’ option, google it. Remember, once you cross your ‘free look’ period, no one will be bothered about you and your policy. So, take care! Wish you Safe Investing![Apologies if you find any typos or errors. I was so enraged typing this, that I didn’t want to edit the document.]Edit 1: Thanks, never thought that the answer would garner 170+ Upvotes. Wish people choose life insurance policies, agents, and banks more carefully.

Why do some gun rights advocates believe that wanting to ban assault weapons is just a first step in a much bigger plan to take away all guns and even all individual freedoms?

Why do some gun rights advocates believe that wanting to ban assault weapons is just a first step in a much bigger plan to take away all guns and even all individual freedoms?Take some time to read the proposed “Assault Weapons Ban of 2018” (H.R.5087) the way a lawyer, a judge, or the Supreme Court would read it. If you're not a lawyer, then get a lawyer to read it and explain it to you.The bill, in its present proposed form, would make ALL semi-automatic firearms (pistols, rifles, you name it) - and almost every other gun of any kind - illegal. It is so full of legal gymnastics and vague language that you may not realize it would eviscerate the Second Amendment and trample all over your rights with the finesse of a stampede of elephants. In fact, the legal hoodwinking in this bill would make Machiavelli proud. After you read the bill and have a good, solid grasp of what it’s really saying, then explain to me why I should believe it is anything other than a complete gun ban. Here's a link to the proposed bill: Text - H.R.5087 - 115th Congress (2017-2018): Assault Weapons Ban of 2018
