The Las Vegas Valley has been inhabited by humans for thousands of years. Paleo-Indian cultures from the end of the last Ice Age were the first ones to settle there. The reason was it has always had a steady source of water. The aquifer that bubbled to the surface 10,000 years ago still does so today. In a hot, dry desert a steady supply of water is the basic reason people do and have always lived here.The name of the local tribe, the Paiute, literally means “water Ute”. Any name in the region with the prefix “pai” or pah” is based on the Paiute name for water. The nearby town of Pahrump is derived from the Paiute name pah-rimpi which means “water rock” due to the number of artesian springs in the area.Paiute family 1906In 1829 a Mexican scout, Raphael Rivera, became the first European to discover the valley. Because of the grassland, abundant game and desert springs he called it Las Vegas or “the Meadows”.In 1844 famed explorer John Fremont entered the valley and wrote glowing reports. This in turn drew settlers to the valley. In 1855 Mormons built a fort and attempted farming in the region. The soil proved poor and agriculture never took off though ranching is still a common industry in the region.Old Mormon FortIn 1890 the Union Pacific Railroad decided to build a line between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. Las Vegas was determined to be the ideal spot for a hub because of it’s water supply (steam engines needed a lot of water). The line made it to Las Vegas in 1904 and one year later Las Vegas officially became an incorporated city. It also became a major transportation hub serving the many new mining towns and lines connecting to Tonapah (Shoshone for “small water) and Reno/Carson. Clark County is named after William Clark, a US senator and a major investor in the railroad.Las Vegas 1905 (UNLV)In 1910 Nevada made gambling illegal following a trend prevalent throughout the west. During the boom years of the 1920’s the local economy, still based in large part on mining started to take a hit. The price of gold and silver declined at the same time as the mines were being played out. Many towns started to see a serious decline which of course hurt the Las Vegas economy immensely. When the 1929 crash happened some of these towns experienced a shot in the arm as rising gold prices once again made extraction economically viable. In 1934 FDR’s Gold Reserve Act, which basically made private ownership illegal, became the coup de grace for the few remaining gold mining towns.Train Station at the end of Fremont Street circa 1920 (UNLV)In 1931 when the work on the Boulder Dam (now named Hoover Dam) started the population swelled from around 5,000 to 25,000, the vast majority being men looking for work. Needless to say those men had certain “needs” and Las Vegas was the place to purchase them. 1931 was also the year that Nevada once again made gambling legal. This was during Prohibition so officially drinking was not an issue. However Las Vegas, and most of Nevada, pretty much openly ignored the 18th Amendment. After a number of workers showed up at the dam with alcohol on their breath when a Federal VIP was inspecting the site Washington DC ordered the workers to be housed on site and thus Boulder City was born. They actually prohibited workers from visiting Las Vegas. Which of course created a new industry designed to smuggle workers into the city.Construction Workers, Hoover Dam (UNLV)With the completion of the dam in 1935 Las Vegas became the first city to receive electricity from the project. The casinos on Fremont Street soon took advantage of this and started to decorate their business with more and more elaborate (and gaudy) neon displays. Fremont Street soon became known as “Glitter Gulch”.Glitter Gulch (Fremont St) in the 1940s (UNLV)Prostitution itself was never officially made illegal in Nevada but the first regulation of it happened in 1937 when the state passed a law requiring a weekly medical checkup for the “sporting girls”. That law still stands.Police raid Roxies Brothel in 1954In 1941 the US Army Air Corp built a gunnery range (now Nellis Air Force Base) north of the city. Due to pressure from the Dept. of Defense prostitution was made illegal in Clark County. This law still stands today.The US Military became an important source of revenue for the city. Revenue from gambling was still from the locals or people passing through to somewhere else. Las Vegas was not yet a destination but still just a waypoint.During the 1950s and up until the 1963 Atmospheric Test Ban, Las Vegas promoted atomic bomb tourism. Party all night and watch the mushroom cloud in the early morning hours. Good times indeed.Mushroom cloud from Fremont StreetAfter the war organized crime started to take a serious interest in Las Vegas. For numerous reasons. First of all gambling is a cash business and gambling was legal. This makes it a easy solution to the problem of making dirty money clean. Profits from the rackets back east could be laundered through the casinos. The first major inroads by the mob was the New York mob under the leadership of Lucky Luciano. Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was sent to Las Vegas to build the first modern, Monte Carlo style casino south of town. This was the beginning of modern Las Vegas. Bugsy had a dream of turning Las Vegas into a adult Mecca. Armed with Mafia money he started construction of the Flamingo (legend has it was named after his girl friend Virginia Hill whose long legs earned her the nickname “Flamingo”). Due to cost overruns, delays and suspicions he was skimming money the Mob had him killed in 1947 in Virginia Hill’s Beverly Hills home.Showgirls at the Flamingo 1950sIn the late 40′s and 50’s the Mafia had invested heavily building casinos in Havana Cuba. For the same reason as in Las Vegas. Gaming brought revenue, it was legal and a great way to laundry money.That all went wobbly when Fidel Castro seized power in 1959. So once again the mob focused on Las Vegas. Not just by the New York mob but the St Louis and Chicago mobs also. Eventually it was the Chicago Outfit that became the predominate player in the city. At the time the Outfit was ran by Paul Ricco and Tony Accardo who were once Al Capones #1 and #2 men. Loaded with cash, laundered through labor unions pension funds (most notably the Teamsters) they built the Las Vegas Strip.Tony AccardoDuring the 60’s and 70’s the mob had the lock on gambling in Vegas. The mob hired the top acts of the day and that attracted millions of tourists. The casinos in of themselves became the money maker and not just a way to laundry other ill gotten gains. Of course the cash nature of gambling also made it easy to avoid income tax. The “Skim” was elevated to an art form. Everyday suitcases of unreported cash was carried by couriers to the mob bosses back east. The gangsters tried to portray themselves as respectable business men and in a sense they were. They were not breaking any Nevada laws and they donated a lot of money to local schools, charities and municipal projects such as parks and museums.Louis Campagna and Paul Ricco in a Police lineup.There was one thing that these gangsters knew how to do better than anyone else. That was how to throw a party. Decades of running illegal gambling operations,, supplying liquor during Prohibition, operating illegal gambling clubs and brothels taught them a deep understanding of what the customer wanted and how to get it to them. In Las Vegas this could be done in the open and with the blessings of the local government. I have a elderly neighbor who was a “entertainment coordinator” for the Sands during this time. She has some amazing stories.During that time Las Vegas was one of the safest cities in America. The Mafia did not allow petty street crime. Anything that could discourage the tourists was not tolerated. Anything that brought attention to them, or painted them in a negative light was dealt with swiftly and brutally. The local police and Sheriff’s Dept. gave them a lot of leeway in policing themselves. Incidents that happened in the casinos was considered casino business. Even crimes like extortion and the protection rackets, ones that would have been encouraged in New York or Chicago, were strictly forbidden in Las Vegas. Gangsters that disobeyed those rules were dealt with harshly. More than a few were given a one way ride into the California desert. The mob bosses preferred that the bodies be disposed of outside of Nevada. Again they wanted to be perceived as legitimate business men. Some, like Meyer Lansky, probably even desired to be accepted in normal society.Frank Sinatra & FriendsOf course those glory days were short lived. Federal law enforcement did not view them as respectable citizens and the pressure was increasing. Jimmy Hoffa of the Teamsters Union was jailed. Tough laws like the RICO Act made it easier to convict and seize assets. Technological advancements made eavesdropping easier. More and more bosses back east were being convicted. The Federal government started to put pressure on local and state politicians. The bought and paid for Nevada Gaming Commission was reformed. The smart bosses like Rico and Accardo saw the writing on the wall and started to disinvest. Slowly, starting with Howard Hughes, large corporations stated to buy out the mob ran businesses. The Vegas you see today is result of that.Vegas had become a destinationLas Vegas also tried to change it’s image. The large theme hotels actively tried to offer more family friendly entertainment. The amount of floor space dedicated to gambling was greatly reduced. The inexpensive shows, the cheap dining and free drinks, things that were designed to get you into the casinos to gamble became the money makers. It now appears that the trend toward family friendly entertainment may have ran it’s course. A few years back the casino developer Steve Wynn stated “we need to put the sin back in Sin City”. His casinos actually discourage children.The one thing Las Vegas has always done is reinvent itself.

Yes - also will also limit your access to certain types of talent (design, engineering, and product management - if you're building a technology product, especially for consumers) as well as capital.There are very talented people working in startups in the Philly Area (I know a few), but the area lacks the easy access to risk-tolerant Angels and established VCs that startups have on the West Coast, and to a lesser degree, NYC.I also think your industry would be highly relevant. Philly has some banking, lots of Pharma, some big media (Comcast, NFL Films). There are definitely startups there, but not like the Bay Area, and not in the same sort of wild, consumer plays you see out West.I made the move from the Valley to the East Coast a few years ago, and recently returned to the West Coast (Seattle this time) because it was hard to find the same kind of batshit-crazy thinkers that make the West Coast what it is.We initially wanted to move to Philly, but ended up in North Jersey because I realized my career in product/UX would likely die in Philly compared to my previous jobs. There was more going on around New York, but not nearly to the same degree as the Valley, Seattle, etc. That was a common story from lots of people who made the same move. Many of us have since moved back west.If you're willing to consider other markets, take a look at Boston, Seattle, Austin and Boulder. Not as expensive as SF or NYC, but a deeper talent pool and startup community than Philly.
