Turn your class projects into mini-research projects, especially if you are pursuing a MS CS in the U.S.. Say you are taking a class on compiler design at a reasonably competitive CS graduate program, you will have to develop a solid compiler for your class. Ditto for classes in OS, computer architecture, and the like. Your code base for your class project becomes the initial framework or seed code base for implementing other existing or new (developed by you and your teammates) algorithms.Compete in research-based programming contests, such as the ISPD programming contest (for the International Symposium on Physical Design), SAT competition (for SAT solvers), SMT competition (for SMT solvers), and TAU Workshop programming contest (for VLSI power grid simulators). Say if you have taken a class on circuit simulation, you can modify your code for power grid simulation and take part in the TAU workshop and benchmark your EDA tool against industry-grade benchmarks. Ditto for SAT and SMT solvers, in which you can compete against researchers from Microsoft Research and the like. It is your chance to be David and kill the Goliaths (e.g., Intel Research, Microsoft Research, or IBM Research) in your chosen topic (say VLSI power grid simulation or SAT solving).Do research, even if you have to pay the university to do so. By unpaid research, I am referring to "directed research" classes in universities where you pay the university to do research with a professor who has agreed to mentor you for a research project. SIGDA has travel grants for EE/CS graduate students to compete in its CADathlon programming contest at ICCAD, and travel grants for participating in the SIGDA Design Automation Summer School (DASS). You can meet students from different countries at the CADathlon and DASS.Engage in other activities that you have been doing for a while, you have yet to try, and/or you love. These may include being a student-athlete, a resident advisor at a residential college/hall/dorm, and participating in student societies/organizations.Create a start-up, or at least take part in startup competitions. Or take part in competitions regarding innovation, such as the Invent Now's Collegiate Innovators Competition (http://invent.org/).Meet as many students as you can who are different from you, and have deep and meaningful conversations with them.
