You are not correct that there is any rationale behind a short haircut, other than gender norming.That being said, in my time, female Navy recruits in the United States were given one short haircut (to above the earlobes) when they arrived at boot camp.If I were to hazard a guess as to why heads aren’t shaved (other than the fact that it’s explicitly prohibited by regs—again, gender norming), it’s that the DOD at some point must have done a cross-sectional study and determined that the loss of potential female hires in reaction to enforced headshaving far outweighed any perceived benefit from headshaving to esprit de corps.

I spoke with a 5th Group guy that worked with the Kurds around the time of the Desert Storm. He said that his ODA was supplying aid and training for the Kurds and as the team’s 18D (Medic) he was treating several wounded and civilians. When they received the order to leave the 18 D told his Teammates that he was staying because he had several patients that would die without his care. The Team’s commander sympathetic with his feelings but told him to come by choice or they would tie him up and load him on the chinooks that were being sent to take the ODA out.while serving on A-401 we broke a lot of rules/regs when a boy of 12 was brought into our camp. He had wounds as such that were indicative of a VC setting an IED that went off while he was setting it up to kill team members. So we didn’t turn him over to the authorities but rather dummied up false paperwork that he was a dependent of one of our Cambodian troops. He was treated in the US Army 3rd Surg Hospital And returned to our area. He was the enemy but he was also just a kid 12 yo.
