PDF Editor FAQ

Why is Chennai called the Heritage City?

I guess you've asked this question citing the article in The Hindu. Chennai, the Heritage cityAnyway to answer the question Chennai is just like any other ex-colonial city like Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi. But what makes chennai more unique is the old homes that's still existent here. Whereas in all other cities I guess the old buildings (houses) have now been converted into apartments, or some other buildings of a greater commercial value. So, in order to answer the question in a more better way we've to sit and analyse the buildings in that locality. Let me first start with the Agraharams in chennai.Agraharams are nothing but a place surrounding the temples where usually Brahmins resided. Basically Brahmins had their houses surrounding the temples because in the past most of the Brahmins were occupied as priests in the nearby temples. But now, it's very difficult to see Agraharams in the city. And the only place that I know of that sort is the locality surrounding the Kapalesswarar temple in Mylapore. A small walk within Mylapore can get you know a lot about the architecture of Agraharams as well as the colonial architecture (see the house near rasi silks).Anglo Indian houses- Although the population and the number of Anglo Indian houses is fast dwindling in Chennai, you can still see a few houses in the localities of St.Thomas mount, Royapuram, Vepery as well as Pursalwalkam (just a few). For further reading on this regard you can read this article The Anglo Indians of ChennaiBritish Bungalows- Usually in Chennai most of the government quarters are British bungalows (eg) the quarters for the regional medical officer in egmore etc.If you want to see some private owning British bungalows then you have a choice too- that is nothing but the 250 years old luz house situated in the bustling location of Mylapore. To know more about it and its architecture you can read this article Madras week: Luz House, a heritage bungalow that whispers stories of yesteryear MadrasVivekananda house- This is not a spritual site but also an example for Victorian architecture in Chennai. Before the construction of the house there was an ice house where the Britishers lived. As the name suggests the Britishers imported Ice from North America for about 30 years before the house got demolished. Vivekananda House in Chennai: A Pilgrimage for Swami Vivekananda’s FollowersGovernment Offices- There are so many government offices from the British era that is still used as government offices. Eg: Fort St George, General post office- Rajaji Salai etc, Ripon building.Churches- There are so many old churches which are about 400 to 80 year old. (Eg) Anderson Church- Parrys, Luz church- Mylapore, Advent Christian church -Velachery, 17th century St.Mary's Church-Rajaji Salai, Santhome Cathedral, Armenian Church of 17th century- Armenian Street, 120 years old CSI holy cross church - Perambur, Velankani Church -Eliots beach, St Andrews Church- Ponamalee high road, St Thomas mount Church -Parangimalai, Descanso Church of 17th Century- St.Marys Road, St.George Cathedral built in 1815-Gopalapuram, St.Patricks Cathedral- Butt road,St Thomas mount, and many more.Temples- Marudeswarar temple built in 50BC (approx), Kapalesswarar temple built in 7th century AD, Thiruneermalai temple built before 8th century AD, Parthasarathy temple- Triplicane which was built in 8th century AD, 1000 year old Dhandeswarar temple in Velachery and a lot more. (Someone who visits temples often can give me some suggestions to add more).Schools- Lady Wellingdon School built in early 1900s located in Mylapore, St.Patricks School in Adyar built in 1875, Church Park, Thousand lights built in 1842 and many more.Masjids- Triplicane Big Masjid built in 1795, Thousand lights Masjid completed in 1810 and a lot more.Colleges- Pachiyappa's college-1842, Loyola college-1925, Presidency college-1840, Queen Mary's College- 1914, Madras Christian College-1837, WCC- 104 years old, Madras medical college- 1835, Stanley medical college-1920, College of engineering, guindy- 225 years old,Dr. Ambedkar Govt law college-1891, Music School In TTK road and a lot more.Hospitals- Rajiv Gandhi Government hospital(1800s),Stanley hospital (early 1900s), Government Eye hospital egmore,St.Isabel's Hospital(1910s), Kasturibai Gandhi Govt hospital, Royapettah government hospital, Tambaram TB sanatorium (1800s) and many more.Library and book shops- Connemara library(1896), Highinbothams(1844) etc.Railway Stations- Central station (1873), Egmore railway station(1905), Tambaram railway station (1900s), Royapuram railway station (1856).Business Centres- Old curiosity shop(more than 80 years old), Mercedes Benz showroom - Titanium motors (1916), EID PARRY company (1788), The Hindu office etc.Port trust, Light house, Govt museum, Govt art gallery, Victoria hall, Chepauk cricket stadium are also some of the well maintained buildings from the British era. Many buildings in Parrys, George Town, Flower bazzar, Anna Salai and Nungambakkam might interest you too. Moreover there a lot of UNESCO heritage sites in Chennai too which adds another feather to the hat.I've tried to cover almost all the points but still if you feel I've left something do let me know via the comments section or through edits.TIP: If you want to discover a lot more about Chennai's heritage by visualising the architecture please take a train from Velachery to the terminus and sit in the window seat. Note down all the places that interests you during the journey and visit it on a separate day after googling and learning about its history.P.S: To learn a lot more Chennai's culture, architecture and heritage you can enroll yourself for Madras musings subscription.I've put in a lot of efforts to write this answer so small words of encouragement from your part will help me to keep my enthusiasm alive. Thank you!Comments and edits are welcome.

What are some impressions from Week 12 of the 2011 NFL season?

Warning: This is an Ndamukong Suh edition -- we're going to stomp everyone for no particular reason.#13 Stevie Johnson 8-75-1 whipped The Great Darrelle Revis all day, putting a drink is his hand and his toes in the sand on Revis Island, and had the gutsiest TD celebration in a road stadium since T.O. danced on the star in dallas. For any who missed it, Johnson mimed shootinghimself in the leg (to diss Plax Burress).. and crashing a plane (to diss Santonio Holmes and his "Jets Flight Boys" idiotic TD routine). http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d824802ec/Johnson-5-yard-TD-catch. Yes, the excessive celebration cost Buffalo 15 yards.. setting up a scenario in which our replacement kicker flubbed the kick/missed most of the ball to put the Jets in business at the Bills 30.. and setting up a jets drive that tied the game 14-14. Yes, Stevie also dropped a sure TD pass with 35 seconds to play while wide open at the Jets 15. That said: although the Bills (5-6) predictably and inevitably lost, Johnson did NOT call out God on Twitter after the game (see: http://articles.nydailynews.com/2010-11-28/sports/27082582_1_god-twitter-steelers) -- so he's clearly maturing. And you had to love Holmes calling Johnson "childish" and "selfish" after the game -- particularly after his own Flight Boys routine/jump into the stands after catching a pass to put NYJ up 28-24 with about a minute left, Stay classy, Tone, you hater! Now for the Sanchise, who came into this game having led the Jets to 27 offensive points on the team's last 27 possessions (not good). Give him this: that was a wonderful, late TD drive to beat the Bills, 28-24. Even if Burress bailed him out with a "you've got to be kidding me, except this always and only happens to the Bills," catch with about two minutes to go on third and 11, a catch the Jets Calvin Pace said "saved our season." But really: 17-35-180-4-1 at home against the Bills (who have no pass rush, and who totally loaded up to stop the run)? A terrible INT on your own 19? I'm still not buying. Ryan Fitzpatrick (26-39-24-3-0) was, by far, the better QB on Sunday. And for the Jets to be in a life-and-death struggle at home against a Bills team missing RB Fred Jackson, DT Kyle Williams, LB Shawne Merriman, C Eric Wood and CB McGee.. well, it shows the Jets aren't ready for takeoff -- that stands even if they get to 8-5, which they should (@WAS, home vs. KC next two weeks). http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112700/2011/REG12/bills@jets#menu=highlights&tab=recapChargers (4-7): You got Tebowed! T2 carried 22 times in this game -- the most by a QB since 1950. I can't explain it, but Denver is now 5-1 under Tebow (6-5 overall). Tebow ran 22-67, threw 9-18-143-1-0, and the Broncos stopped the Bolts in OT 16-13, in San Diego, to send Norvelous Norv Turner and the Chargers to their sixth straight loss. Chargers kicker Nick Novak missed from 48 (in 4th quarter) and 53 (in OT) late; but with Ryan Mathews 22-137 running well, and against a so-so (at best) Denver D, Philip Rivers needed to do better than 188 yards on 36 throws; I still think he's playing through some unannounced injury. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112710/2011/REG12/broncos@chargers#menu=highlights&tab=recap"Brett Favre.. this is the Houston Texans calling. Want to play? Can we text you the contract -- wait, wait, wait, we'll fax it to be safe." C'mon, the Texans are 8-3, have a terrific rushing attack and defense, and desperately need a triggerman now that both Schaub and Leinart are down for the count. Make the call. Do it for Chris Berman and everyone at ESPN, who have had to live without Brett Favre all season. Do it for Suzy Kolber, so she can say, "Brett Favre just loves to play football, he's like a little kid out there," one more time. Do it so Ron Jaworski (and/or) Jon Gruden can say, "Brett Favre is a great thrower of the football, and in this league, you have to throw the football, because championships are won from the pocket. Brett Favre is a playmaker, who loves to make plays." Or at least call David Garrard (who still doesn't have a job?). Unless T.J. Yates is truly The Truth. The Texans beat the Jags 20-13, and got Jags QB Blaine Gabbert benched for non-performance late (13-29-136-0-1). CALL FAVRE NOW. For the media circus alone. For Wrangler. Make the call. Or at least call Jeff Garcia. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112702/2011/REG12/texans@jaguars#menu=highlights&tab=recapNew England (8-3) is going to be a tough out, and I suspect they'll face the Steelers #1 pass defense (5.83 yards/attempt) in the AFC Title Game -- apologies to the Ravens and Texans. Tom Brady destroyed the (4-7) Eagles for 361 yards and three TDs in a 38-20 Pats win, in Philly, before a crowd that was rather lubricated and "ready." Yes, New England gave up 400 so-what passing yards to Vince Young (!). Pats came from 10-0 down on the road here to pretty much stick it to the Dream Team. Next up: "Andy Reid, this is Bill Polian calling, have you ever thought about coaching in Indy? Not interested? Should I call Norv Turner?" http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112709/2011/REG12/patriots@eagles#menu=highlights&tab=recap#13 Stevie Johnson 8-75-1 whipped The Great Darrelle Revis all day, putting a drink is his hand and his toes in the sand on Revis Island, for real, and had the gutsiest TD celebration (feigning shooting himself, to diss Plax Burress, AND crashing a plane, to diss Holmes and his Jets Fly Boys idiocy) in a road stadium since T.O. danced on the Dallas star as a Niners WR. And although the Bills (5-6) predictably and inevitably lost, Johnson did NOT call out God on Twitter after the game (see: 2010). Quorans know I have been down on Sanchez -- and yes, as a long-suffering Bills fan (or just "Bills fan"), that crow is NOT yummy this week -- and give him this: that was a wonderful, late TD drive to beat the Bills, 28-24. Even if Burress bailed him out with a "you've got to be kidding me, except this always and only happens to the Bills," catch with about two minutes to go. And you can expect the NYC media to write how he's matured, how this was his version of The Drive, or at least, a Tebow-like moment, etc. But really: 17-35-180-4-1 at home against the Bills (who have no pass rush, and who totally loaded up to stop the run)? Wild all day? A terrible INT on your own 19? I'm still not buying. Ryan Fitzpatrick (26-39-24-3-0) was, by far, the better QB on Sunday. And for the Jets to be in a life-and-death struggle at home against a Bills team missing RB Fred Jackson, DT Kyle Williams, LB Shawne Merriman, C Eric Wood and CB Terrance McGee.. well, it shows the Jets aren't ready for takeoff -- that stands even if they get to 8-5, which they should (@WAS, home vs. KC next two weeks). http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112700/2011/REG12/bills@jets#menu=highlights&tab=recapSpeaking of not ready for prime time.. I'm talking about you, Lions (7-4). Ndamukong Suh lost his cool (and his mind?); Matt Stafford lost his touch; and the Lions lost, badly, to a (now) 11-0 Packers team. Green Bay at Giants this week is a land mine for the Pack.. but I'm out of superlatives for Aaron Rodgers. If he's going to play like this all year, everyone else is playing for second. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112400/2011/REG12/packers@lionsDallas (7-4) keeps winning, but golly, they don't make it easy. Edging DC in OT and Miami (3-8) on a last-second FG, in a home game in which they were frankly outplayed, doesn't scream"juggernaut" to me. Matt Moore and Rex Grossman have looked good throwing against Dallas the past two weeks. Exactly how might Aaron Rodgers look? http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112401/2011/REG12/dolphins@cowboysBaltimore (8-3) stopped and exposed the Niners (9-2) in a game that featured one touchdown and 14,658 reaction shots of the Harbaugh Boys, who coached against each other. The Ravens have two big problems: the don't run it very well (even with Ray Rice); they have Joe Flacco at QB. For the Niners, Alex Smith 15-24-140-0-1 looked awful all night, and was sacked and battered nine times by a Ravens defensive front that totally physically manhandled the SF O-line. The Niners D is for real -- it's easily the best in the NFC, and hasn't yielded a rushing TD all year, which is amazing. But the offense isn't adequate enough to hang with the Packers and Saints among the NFL elite, IMHO.. at least, not yet. Flacco in this game was like Mark Sanchez in the Buffalo game; he looked great at times (like on the TD drive when he his seven different WRs), and like a developmental QB a lot of other times in the game. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112402/2011/REG12/49ers@ravens#menu=highlights&tab=recapAtlanta (7-4) is an off the radar, gathering storm. If their coach hadn't gone for it on 4th and 1 from his own 29 in OT vs. New Orleans (they were stopped, and Brees drove N.O. 8 yards for a game-winning FG), we'd be talking about an 8-3 squad that has won six straight games. BUT. Atlanta cannot keep giving up 39 yard TDs on 4th and 13; or giving up 104 yard KOR. Percy Harvin scored on each of those for an Adrian Peterson-less Vikings (2-9) team, that made this closer than it should have been. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112703/2011/REG12/vikings@falcons#menu=highlights&tab=recapCincinnati (7-4) struggled to beat Cleveland (4-7), 23-20, in a game the Bengals never led until 38 seconds remained (thanks to another ridiculous A.J. Green 3-110-1 catch). Cedric Benson pounded the rock for 106 yards and a TD, and Cleveland botched ANOTHER late FG snap (albeit on a 55 yard try) to give Cincy a window to win -- and the Red Rifle (Andy Dalton) responded. The Browns have a D; they just need more offensive firepower. But again: the Bengals are 7-4. Anyone else want to see them play Palmer in Oakland in round one of the playoffs? http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112701/2011/REG12/browns@bengals#menu=highlights&tab=recapCarolina (3-8) beat Indy (0-11), 27-19.. OK, NOW the Colts may actually do this, and go 0-16. Cam 20-27-208, 9-53-1 running, to lead Carolina to its first road win after 12 consecutive losses dating to 2009. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112705/2011/REG12/panthers@colts#menu=highlights&tab=recapBeanie Wells ran for a franchise-best 228 yards in leading Arizona (4-7) over the St. Louis Rams (2-9), 23-20. Suddenly, that 253 DeMarco Murray hung on the Rams doesn't look like all that (kidding). Cards rookie CB Patrick Peterson may be the new Devin Hester -- he took his fourth punt back this season for a TD in this game. Cards QB John Skelton looks overmatched; Rams QB Sam Bradford needs to start winning games like this, although his D is a disaster: http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112704/2011/REG12/cardinals@rams#menu=highlights&tab=recap245-pound RB LeGarette Blount hurdled a defender during an awesome first quarter run for the (4-7) Bucs, and rampaged for 103 yards. And he wasn't even close to the best back in this game. That was.. CJ2K, Chris Johnson, who FINALLY detonated on someone for the (6-5) Titans, running 23-190 and looking terrific for really the first time all year. Nine turnovers in this game (five by TB, four by TN). But the Titans are somehow 6-5, in the playoff race, and in the neighborhood if 8-3 Houston can't find a QB (Schaub and Leinart apparently are both done for the year now). I hate the Titans on General Principle, because of Home Run Throwback/Music City Miracle on January 8, 2000 (not that I remember the date, or that it was on an illegal forward lateral play, or anything), but you've got to give it to them -- they are 6-5 and CJ2K is just starting to heat it up. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112706/2011/REG12/buccaneers@titans#menu=highlights&tab=recapSebastian Janikowski kicked six field goals to help Oakland escape Chicago 25-20. Both teams are now 7-4. Carson Palmer couldn't finish drives with TDs against a tough Chicago D, but he did throw for 301 yards. Caleb Hanie went 18-36-254-2-3 in his first start for the Bears; he needs to be a lot better in Chicago is going to stay in the NFC Playoff race, absent Jay Cutler. I ripped the Raiders when they dealt for Palmer; they've only been winning pretty much ever since. Maybe Hue Jackson knew what he was doing (especially if the alternative was Kyle Boller..) http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112708/2011/REG12/bears@raiders#menu=highlights&tab=recapSeatle (4-7): what's up? How can you blow a 17-7 lead in the fourth quarter at home to Rex Grossman at the Skins (4-7), who had only lost their six previous games? Grossman was 26-35-314; he's been pretty hot since halftime of the Dallas loss a week ago. Attention, Fantasy Footballers: Mike Shanahan finally has a #1 back, Roy Helu 23-108-1. Marshawn Lynch ran 24-111 for Seattle in this loss. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112707/2011/REG12/redskins@seahawks#menu=highlights&tab=recapSteelers (8-3): not pretty, but it is a W. Polamalu injury bears watching. Chiefs haven't scored a TD in 45 possessions -- an incredible string of ineptitude -- so not sure if the Steelers D is this good, KC's O is this bad, or a bit of both. http://www.nfl.com/gamecenter/2011112711/2011/REG12/steelers@chiefs#menu=highlights&tab=recapNYG-NO on MNF. Saints 0-11 in coin tosses (including one OT) this year, so keep an eye on that for fun.Best Best for Super Bowl after 12 Weeks:Patriots vs. Packers; Pack winning.

I had got my OS crashed and had to get video editor license migrated. I have raised request on support portal explaining my circumstances and got email from support team within few mins. They addressed my concerns really fast that i haven't expected since it was my first experience with support in year after purchasing software.
