Pandemic ReliefDoug Ford did virtually nothing for the people in Ontario who have lost their jobs, are facing pandemic-related price hikes to essential goods and services (and some who are receiving disability allowances at no more than $1100 per person). I watched numerous persons with disabilities throughout this pandemic due to Ford’s poor handling and ignorance of the impact it had on people with disabilities, where more have been turning to Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD). This is an invisible human rights crisis, because people with disabilities have been denied a voice under Doug Ford’s cabal. They are not even getting priority under Ford’s vaccine distribution chain. When this was raised to Ford during the summer, he said that if people receiving ODSP wanted more money, they (quote) should just get a job (unquote). We all know of the massive job losses during the pandemic. Industries impacted tend to affect most entry-level jobs that some people with disabilities might be able to seek to work part-time, but those jobs are gone. To imply that people with disabilities, many of whom cannot work at all, should just get a job in the midst of a global pandemic if they need more money to pay skyrocketing grocery costs, etc., is a very ignorant and selfish thing for a Premier to say, particularly when he is supposed to be a Premier of all the people of Ontario, and not just those that are doing well.Small BusinessFor a Premier that seems to want to support business so much, small businesses in the province are dying off quickly as a direct result of lockdowns and the virus. His late support for the small business grant only goes to a small sliver of the small business population and is not going to last, even for these businesses that are eligible. For businesses that are essential, many of them are not eligible for even this grant, but have lost a lot of money anyways due to the pandemic’s effect on the overall economy. When the eviction ban was put on Ontario, it took Ford several months to even put a pathetic effort to assist small businesses that are facing evictions from their commercial landlords.Poor Pandemic ResponseAnnouncement of public health measures, mockdowns and other rules have often come too little, too late. I do not know about you, but if you are told to shut your business down, or to only work at home (if able), the costs of this should be covered, or else many of these businesses would not be trying to open up against public health regulations. There are underground salons, nail manicure places, even bars, that are operating out of people’s basements throughout Ontario. The number one reason for doing this is because the business owner felt they had not choice, other than to do this, or lose their homes, etc. These places are often not requiring masks, social distancing, etc., and the virus spreads. Many of these same businesses, when operating above ground, were very careful in their operations, limiting the number of people served, socially distancing, using masks, etc.People who are angry at all of this are falling for the “anti lockdown” and “anti mask” movements which frankly have been co-opted by alt-right interests (that do not have any interest in the fate of small businesses, people with disabilities, access to vaccines, etc.). These people tend to gather unabated and in larger and larger groups, to openly defy public health guidelines, yet Ford and his government have no plans to manage these gatherings, even though there is evidence that most of these events were super spreader events that have contributed to the ICU shortages.Ford has been pressured and asked over and over again about the implementation of some type of sick leave program for workers in workplaces that Ford and government deemed to be essential. When people do not have sick pay, they will come to work sick, regardless of the impact they may have on their coworkers and others in the workplace. Many are afraid to approach their employer about not working in a situation that might put them in danger of catching COVID (as they cannot afford to lose their job). Ford’s government has done zero for this group of people and COVID cases are rising among these essential workplaces, e.g. 600 at Amazon fulfillment centre, hundreds at Mississauga postal sorting station, etc. Where does Ford think many of these workers are ending up?Policing Stay-at-Home OrdersSeems that Ford would rather have police chase after any ordinary person or family going for groceries or for a walk at the beach, than to try to put controls in places where the virus really spreads. Telling everybody to work from home is not going to do it either, as not everybody has the facilities and space to do their work from their homes, even if their jobs can technically be done remotely. People in these occupational groups are not a large spread for the COVID virus either, as these essential offices often take very proactive steps to keep numbers down and people inside safe while they are working. I personally have not heard of any cases of COVID19 coming from accountants and law offices, as these places basically do a lot of precautions of their own.Increasing police powers to enforce this order is only going to land on racialized minorities, homeless and poor people, who already get a high degree of harassment from the police. Instead, police should only be using this power under “reasonable grounds” to determine people who are participating in large gatherings, anti-mask protests, so-called “freedom walks”, and so forth, where social distancing, masks and public health precautions are flouted openly. Workplace inspections should be focused on employers that should be adding protections for workers that work close together for long periods of time, are put into positions where they are forced to work without proper PPE, etc. Public transit vehicles should also be set up to support social distancing, but instead are continuously packed. None of these things are being addressed by Ford.VaccinesIt seems that vaccinating populations works. Folks older than 70 and people of aboriginal backgrounds have largely been vaccinated and we are seeing a substantive drop in cases, hospitalizations and deaths in these groups. However, we are noting younger groups of people ending up in the ICU, deaths in some young people, as well as outbreaks in large workforces. Contact tracing needs to be done and where there appears to be large outbreaks, should be where the vaccines are going.Sadly, it appears that vaccines are not necessarily going into the arms of people who are public facing, have underlying health conditions that can make COVID-19 difficult/severe for them, or are low income. Public health officials know these are the populations that these kinds of pandemics hurt the most, and also contribute considerably to the spread in the community.Under Ford, it appears people residing in OPC-held ridings where a large number of them are highly paid and work from home are getting their vaccines before the former category of people. This was exposed from a number of sources, until Ford was shamed into the possibility of using mobile units to visit some of the more hard hit areas.On the supply issue, Ford always pointed to the federal government for not giving Ontario enough vaccines. Others here have pointed out that approximately 1.4 million more vaccines were issued from the federal government than were injected in people’s arms. When confronted on this, Ford said he needed a “buffer”. This lies against the whole issue of vaccine centres closing up for lack of supply, appointments being cancelled and people not being able to get in for their vaccines. Why isn’t this “buffer” being used for these places that seem to be running out? Esp. given that the federal government is getting millions of extra doses from Pfizer soon.ConclusionsI am not pleased with how the Ford government handled this pandemic. At first, when it first hit us, it was not bad. I can hardly wait until next year’s election to toss him out on his ear, because many of the COVID deaths I am aware of, could have been prevented, had it not been for the incompetence of this government.
