A Kleenex box.Earlier this year, my MIL brought gifts for her grand kids for some obscure holiday. She happily pulled out gifts for my niece (10) and nephew (7) - chocolates and toys. My daughter (10) was given a small set of doll accessories.For my son (12), my MIL pulled out...an empty, dirty, used Star Wars-themed popcorn box from the movie theater and a small Star Wars-themed box of Kleenex.To his credit, my son did his best to hide his disappointment. He thanked his grandmother, but it was a difficult ride home to be sure.My MIL isn't that old, by the way. She's not even yet 65 years old. I can't even make an excuse for her.She does the same thing with my SIL and husband. She’ll shower my SIL with expensive concert tickets and “puppy grams,” despite being on a very tight fixed income. Meanwhile, she’ll give my husband a pair of mismatched socks covered in dog hair that are two sizes too small for his birthday (when she remembers).(Note: We really haven’t done anything but support both of them when my SIL’s marriage fell apart (thanks to her infidelity) and my FIL passed away 5+ years ago. We saved my MIL’s house, worked on her house and yard, cooked dinners, etc. After 6–9 months of this with no thanks from her, we realized she expected it from us while going out to “play” and have fun with my SIL. We slowly scaled back our efforts.)When it comes to her grand kids, she feels she needs to spoil my niece and nephew. That's what grandmas do, but I've never seen someone do it in such an unbalanced fashion.My kids noticed a few years ago, and there would usually be a lot of tears on the way home from her house.One time, my daughter gently asked her why she would give her other grand kids unlimited candy and toys, including 5+ American Girl dolls, while not doing it for her (and her brother).My MIL's response: "You have a daddy. They don't."Sigh.It's a terrible reasoning to give a child, especially when my former BIL has partial custody of his kids We had a huge blow-up not long after that conversation (for a variety of reasons), and the relationship between our family and my MIL/SIL has never really recovered.I suppose we should be happy that she at least knew my son loves Star Wars. It was also a good way to begin teaching our kids that 1) life isn't fair, 2) forgiveness isn't easy, and 3) sometimes people confuse material things with love.

2 totally different situations.One woman, after the visit, opened the cupboard under the exam table and was taking multiple small boxes of kleenex and packing them into her bag when the medical assistant and I came back into the room for something; the door was ajar.The other, quite different, was a situation where a family had one child after another within a few days with test-positive whooping cough (in older children it may not present with a whoop so much as a bad cough which may lead to vomiting after an initial illness with runny nose. It is quite contagious. Public Health contacted her, advised to keep the children home for a period of time while initiating treatment of the family and notified me about it so I wrote out the prescriptions for the medical center pharmacy. Later that day I saw all the children with a shopping cart and mom in Costco, a huge warehouse store in the area.
