My poor Mother spent more times driving us to ER’s that the completely dour, deadpan Chinese doctor, DR Lu, told my tiny Mother to stop beating us where it shows. Good Times!Now to the Heroin. This is what being given IV Dilaudid (Synthetic Heroin) for your first time on a drug free brain at 14 years old feels like: Doctor shows me an X-ray showing my leg snapped in half. Duh! Probably been at least one hour an 30 minutes I have been in pain with no relief. He says: “We will need to set your bone” I reply, “What does that mean?” well, “It means that your bones are not aligned and we need to put them back where they belong before we put you cast on.” This was far from my first cast, stitches or local anesthesia but this required breaking the glass in case of emergency and bringing out the magic needle.Doctor:”We are giving you something for the pain while we prepare to wrench your foot back to it’s rightful place facing the floor.” me, at this point just using non-verbal communication nodded along in agreement. The vial is tipped, the syringe is drawn, air bubbles and precious junkie-juice expelled on the floor, just like on movies and TV.BAM! Heroin hits my vein on the crack of my elbow and my heart pumps it to my brain in seconds. I instantly feel a sensation unlike anything I had ever felt before. The only association I can say is it felt like being in my Mother’s womb. A warm rush of ultimate euphoria hit my brain, my 2 hours of excruciating pain was temporarily in a different galaxy. Every problem, insecurity, or bad feeling I ever had instantly evaporated. Washed over by the gentle waves of the tides of Mother morphine. At 14 I had already had several GF’s so I had experienced orgasms, this was new, different, lasted longer and was a full body, mind, and soul embrace. Eventually they cut a window in my cast and I began the year long recovery of being able to take a step on my own on my new shrunken, pale and atrophied foot. Doc said if I would have kept growing that one leg would have been longer than the other. Never been so happy to be 5′9″ in my life! Don’t do drugs kiddies.
