She first starred in a child’s sketch series called All That but got her own spin off called The Amanda Show.Amanda left Nickelodeon to pursue a more “adult” career on the big screen. She starred in movies such as Big Fat Liar, What A Girl Wants, Hairspray, and She’s The Man. But by the time 2012 rolled around, she started showing bizarre behavior that led to a mental breakdown. Here is the tragic story of former childhood star, Amanda Bynes:Amanda Bynes’ Childhood and Early CareerAmanda Laura Bynes was born in California to her parents, Lynn and Rick on April 3, 1986. [1][1][1][1]A young Amanda Bynes (image: Aimee Rogers via Pinterest)When Amanda turned seven, her parents let her take comedy classes for children at various locations near her home. As she took these classes, she got offers for professional acting gigs.Amanda’s first acting gig was in a commercial for Nestlé candies. She then was in some stage productions like “Annie” and “The Secret Garden.”Then came her big break: A Nickelodeon producer spotted Bynes on stage, performing at a comedy camp at Los Angeles’s Laugh Factory. [2][2][2][2]The producer encouraged the child’s parents to let her audition for All That, a sketch comedy for tweens. Her parents agreed and in 1996, Amanda became part of the show’s cast. Then, in 1999, just three years after her debut on All That, Nickelodeon producers wanted Amanda to have her own show. The show was titled The Amanda Show. The Amanda Show was a hit and produced several iconic sketches, but quietly ended after just three seasons. Amanda was growing up and wanting to pursue more adult acting gigs. She moved on and started acting in the WB’s show, What I like About You. [3][3][3][3]Besides What I Like About You, Amanda starred in some popular teen movies with well-established actors. For example, she starred in She’s the Man with Channing Tatum and Big Fat Liar with Frankie Muniz. But her biggest role was playing Penny in the on-screen adaptation of Hairspray in 2007. There starred alongside Zac Efron, John Travolta, and Nikki Blonski.Amanda as Penny Pingleton in Hairspray (image: Amazon)During this era, she also was named one of Teen People’s “Hottest Stars Under 25” and started a fashion line in collaboration with now defunct retail chain Steve & Barry’s.[4][4][4][4]Showing SignsIn 2009, Amanda signed a two-film deal for Easy A. But after the first film, Amanda broke contract. She would have been in a starring role in the second film. In June of 2010, Amanda announced her retirement from acting. She wrote on Twitter, “Being an actress isn’t as fun as it may seem.” [5][5][5][5]Amanda in Easy A (image: Cinemablend)By July of 2010, Amanda “unretired” and clarified that she needed a break from acting. She further clarified in another interview that she had been acting since she was 7 and that she was now 25, so it was time for a rest. [6][6][6][6]But during this break, Amanda’s behavior started getting more and more bizarre. She deleted her original Twitter feed and opened up a new account. Her Tweeting became erratic, with explicit Tweets. She was regularly drinking and smoking marijuana (which Amanda says that she started at 16). She then began abusing Aderral.Amanda’s Mental Health BreakdownIn 2012, police arrested Amanda for driving under the influence (DUI). While drunk, she allegedly crashed into a police car. She refused to take a test for drugs or alcohol. [7][7][7][7]Just a few days later, Amanda hit another car in San Fernando Valley, California. She was accused of fleeing the scene. [8][8][8][8]After this accident, she tweeted [9][9][9][9]to then-president Barrack Obama, asking him to free her of charges and that she doesn’t drink. [10][10][10][10](image: OK! Magazine)In August of 2012, Amanda Bynes was in yet another hit-and-run,[11][11][11][11] which caused her misdemeanor charges. If convicted, she would have faced up to a year in jail [12][12][12][12]Just weeks after being charged, Amanda Bynes was charged for driving with a suspended license[13][13][13][13], which she had taken away after being charged with her hit-and-runs.Through the rest of 2012, Amanda continued her erratic behavior. She moved to New York City, claimed that she didn’t drink, and stripping to her bra during a spin class. [14][14][14][14]She also walked around a tanning salon completely naked[15][15][15][15], but sued In Touch magazine for publishing a “fake” story. [16][16][16][16] Amanda's publicist, agent, and lawyer all dropped Amanda due to her behavior.[17][17][17][17]In 2013, Bynes seemed to continue with her breakdown. She continued with her bizarre tweeting and partying. In May of 2013, she had a “drug-fueled house party.” In Touch documented this party, claiming Bynes was sleeping on a bare mattress and that all her windows had been spray-painted black.Photo Spread of Amanda’s Party (Source: InTouch Weekly)The day following the party, Amanda was arrested for throwing a bong outside her 36th-floor window in her New York City high-rise[18][18][18][18]. She claimed that the bong was “just a vase” and that the cops sexually harassed her.Amanda in court following her 2013 arrest (New York Post / Twitter)Seeking TreatmentAmanda moved back to her parents’ house in California after her arrests. In July of 2013, Amanda started a small fire in the driveway of her neighbor’s home, almost killing her dog. Authorities placed her on a 72-hour psychiatric hold for evaluation. [19][19][19][19]Her parents gained conservatorship of Amanda and doctors extended her time at the hospital from 3 days to two weeks.[20][20][20][20](image: ENews)In 2014, Amanda began to get better. She tweeted that doctors diagnosed her with bipolar disorder.Amanda started taking medicine and was under the care of a psychiatrist. She was not living with her parents but alleged her parents gave her a $50 per day allowance.[21][21][21][21]Amanda is under conservatorship until 2020, where her mom can decide about her health and medical issues. She graduated from fashion school in 2019. [22][22][22][22]Amanda graduating from fashion school (image: Amanda Bynes on Twitter)The Roots of Amanda Bynes’s BreakdownAmanda is a prime example of a child star being pushed too far. Her fame contributed to her demise.Amanda said in an interview that She’s The Man and Easy A destroyed her self-image. She’s The Man sent her into a deep depression because she hated how she looked like as a man. In Easy A, she said she hated her performance.[23][23][23][23]Amanda claims that she was smoking marijuana at the time of Easy A’s filming. She believes the drugs played a role in how she saw herself in the movie.Out Of The Woods?Amanda Bynes has been doing better, but that does not mean that she’s out of the woods. Mental illness is a life-long disease. In March 2019, media reported that Amanda returned to rehab after suffering a relapse from stress. [24][24][24][24]Edit / Adenneum: Since so many people clearly didn’t choose to read the whole thing where the word contributed to was used:Abuse and trauma and mental illness and addiction are all rampant among children stars. It’s not isolated and it seems like the events around them being a child star contribute to their illness.I just chose Amanda, because she was one of my favorite child stars when I was a kid.More examples:• Macaulay Culkin admitted his father threatened to beat him if Macaulay didn’t meet his high standards. How do you help children/teens cope with transitions (new school, moving, etc)?

Unfortunately, it is different for each child. Having spent over 20 years in the Marines, our family moved numerous times, and each was unique. If you can find an activity or a sport where your kids can meet someone prior to the start of the school year, that might provide for an easier integration into the new school. For elementary aged kids, maybe talk to the child’s prospective teacher so that he or she can pair your child up with a person in the class on the first day of school. Above all, be understanding if things don’t go well the first few weeks. There are clicks at school that have been together since preschool. It can be hard for kids to break into those clicks at first. But over time, they will find their little groups of friends, and hopefully things will take off quickly from there.
