Hotel Columbia: Fill & Download for Free

My wife and I were once in a nice restaurant at the Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River, Oregon. We had our son and daughter with us, about 8 and 6 years old. We had talked to them about the restaurant and our expectations of their behavior. They did really well for their age and we were very happy with them.An older couple stopped by our table on the way out and complimented us and our children on how well behaved they were in the restaurant. That really reinforced in our children that people noticed and appreciated their behavior.That is how children learn what society expects and learn to live up to that.

My husband and I were visiting San Diego one summer. We were doing the usual touristy things which included a visit to the San Diego Zoo. We started up a casual conversation with a young man who worked at the zoo. He asked where we were from so we told him Vancouver, British Columbia. He was tickled to hear that we were from B.C. as he said his parents had taken him and his sister there a few years back and had a wonderful time.In the middle of his reminisces about his visit to Vancouver, he asked if we had a telephone in our home. We assured him that pretty much everyone in the country had at least one phone, if not more. He seemed very surprised so I asked him why. He said that they had stayed in a hotel in Vancouver and his parents had been shocked that there was no telephone in the hotel room. From that the family had assumed that that particular communication technology hadn’t made it to Canada yet and that Canadians must be a very backward lot. (I didn’t want to suggest that perhaps it was his parent’s choice of hotel that was the problem.)Some years earlier when calling a tech centre in California for help with a computer program I had installed I was connected to a young man who said he lived in San Jose, Calif. He asked where I lived and I told him Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. He told me that he knew enough to know that British Columbia wasn’t in Canada, but rather in England. I assured him that I was Canadian, living in Canada. He complimented me on how good my English was for a Canadian. Where had I learned to speak it so well?I asked the young man if he had ever been to Canada and that perhaps he would enjoy a trip to Vancouver. He said he wouldn’t have a clue how to get over there. I suggested that he could get in a car and just keep driving north to the American/Canadian border north of Seattle. He assured me that he could certainly get to Seattle and Washington State but didn’t know how one could cross over. I said he should just drive up to Canadian Customs at the border, show his passport, and drive across. But he couldn’t understand how he could get across the physical border and how would he travel if he could actually manage to make it over the border? I finally, after trying many ways to explain that we had roads, cars, etc. and that the border was actually an imaginary line and not a physical pink obstacle like the maps seem to indicate, suggested that he enquire at Canadian Customs as to where he hire a dog sled and team and then ask at the first igloo he came to for directions to get to Vancouver. This seemed to make more sense to him than any other explanation I had given.I certainly realize that these two young men probably aren’t typical of most Americans, they had obviously both been well-educated in their fields, but I do think it shows that perhaps more emphasis should be given in US schools on the geography of the rest of the world, particularly that of its closest neighbours.

Now while it’s customary for hotels to raise their prices during certain events and an inauguration is of course a once-in-a-four-year-event, the Trump family takes it to another level.According to the Trump International Hotel D.C’s website, it hiked its rates to $1,795 for a Deluxe King to $2,079 for a Premier King per night for Jan. 19 and 20, while similar rooms run anywhere from $310-$526 during most of the rest of January. The rate for a Premier King on those dates ranges from $3626 to $4669. Consider it a nice way of taking care of his supporters...Gee, I can't imagine why. Probably because think that Democrats in DC for the inauguration will be flocking to the Trump hotel just to help Donnie out with his $1 billion debt. Also, I guess they didn't get the memo, since the Inauguration will be mostly a virtual event. No wonder Trump had numerous bankruptcies and failed businesses.Other ritzy D.C. hotels, which have suffered during the slowdown in travel because of the pandemic, are also trying to capitalize on any Democrats coming to town for the much-scaled down inauguration.The Hay-Adams hotel, which is close to the White House, has increased its rates up to $1,399 per evening around the inauguration, up from the mid to upper $300 range, according to its website. Do they lose the security deposit if all the sleep apnea folks snore loudly enough to wake adjacent floors?
