What do mediocre people in Silicon Valley do? In the land of obsessing over “top talent”, “superstar developers”, and “near geniuses”, is there any place for “just average”?

Fake it till you make it.Back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, before the dot com bubble popped, there was this idea that anyone with even the most basic computer skills could get a fabulous tech job. There were a lot of companies being run by MBAs and business people, who couldn’t tell the difference between a Stanford Computer Science PhD and the next door neighbor’s babysitter who was learning HTML in their spare time. There really were a ton of mediocre web developers. The proof is easily found by using the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine to look at some of the websites from that era.Well, the bubble popped, and all the people running those companies got burned as their money dried up and they went under. What was left were the corpses of poorly implemented web start-ups and a bunch of unemployed mediocre web developers. What happened to those mediocre web developers? Some of them probably went back to Kansas or whatever hole they crawled out of. Other stuck around, and tried to retrain themselves to squeeze back into the industry.Silicon Valley was spooked by all those start-ups going belly-up. What went wrong? The one major success story from that time period — the silver lining and ray of hope — was Google, a company founded by two whiz kid PhDs from Stanford. So Silicon Valley got the idea in its head that a successful company needs to look like Google, and in typical Silicon Valley fashion, they went overboard — requiring that not only the founders be smart whiz kids but that everyone employed also needs to be a bad ass ninja.Of course, hiring managers were just as clueless as ever, and couldn’t really tell the difference between the actual ninjas and posers. The laid-off mediocre developers also quickly caught on and started over-selling their talents to try to get jobs. And the more mediocre people getting interviewed or hired, the more a company tries to raise its bar…“Well, his resume looked good. We thought he was a ninja. Where are the real ninjas at?”Most still don’t know. So Silicon Valley today looks quite a bit like Hollywood. Everyone is trying to show off, just to get noticed. You have a small amount of talent and a whole lot of noise, and it’s hard to tell where the real talent is. So people rely on networking more and more — you get jobs by who you know, not what you know. And that means that the next door neighbor’s babysitter might actually get that coveted job rather instead of the Stanford PhD.This big push to hire rockstars and ninjas has maybe raised the average quality of developers a little bit, but not as much as the hype would make it appear. Most developers are still pretty mediocre — they just have to work a lot harder to get jobs, and really hustle non-stop to self-promote.For those of us that aren’t really into bragging all the time, the situation can seem a bit glum.Last time I was in Silicon Valley, I saw a lot of unemployed developers, many who were even willing to work for free to get their name out there. Many of these people are probably “mediocre” or “just average” although some of them may actually have real skills and are just unlucky that they haven’t found a job yet in this bullshit system.None of them would admit that they’re mediocre. Here’s what to do if you find yourself in the situation of being gainfully unemployed in Silicon Valley:Learn an obscure but trendy programming language. C++? I’m too cool for that. Java? Wasn’t that invented in the 90’s — does your grandfather still use it? That way, you can claim you’re an expert in this obscure language, and no senior developer can call bullshit, since they don’t know your obscure language. At no time should you ever look apprehensive or admit that you’re struggling to find a job. Looking for a job is a sign of weakness. Remember, you choose to be unemployed! The reason you are unemployed is because you haven’t found a job worthy of your time and consideration. Say it to yourself ten time in the mirror every day. Only “mediocre people” are unemployed not by choice. You must smile where ever you go. You’re happy-go-lucky like the Woz or whatever. Earthly concerns like having a roof over your head or food to eat are not your concerns. You are driven to code because you can’t imagine there being anything more important in life.Dress nice but NOT too nice. Don’t wear Gucci suits. This isn’t finance, and you’re not looking for a job in New York or Boston. You need to look the part of a stereotypical California programmer. The whole “dress to impress” mantra means something different in Silicon Valley than it does to the rest the world. You impress people by making them think you might be the next Mark Zuckerberg or Steve Jobs. Would you get the part if a casting director were looking to hire for a movie? You want people to think you’re successful and have money, but not that you would spend it the way most New Yorkers would. It’s okay not to own a tie and to go to your interview without a tie.You need to have some independent project you’re working on. Maybe two or three. These are your conversation starters and will back-up your story that you’re unemployed by choice. You don’t have a job because you simply don’t have time for one with all the projects you’re working on. Maybe…you’d reconsider if a temping enough offer came along. As for the kind of projects you should advertise you’re working on, I suggest picking things that sound very nerdy but kind of impractical. Not something that is likely to make money. The last thing you want to do is have an act so good that you fool people into believing that you’re very intent on pursuing a start-up, and they should leave you alone because your destiny is to change the world. This assumes you’re more interested in getting a job than doing a start-up. If that’s not true, then completely ignore my advice. Remember that the “too busy to work” is a cover story — you’d happily take a nice job if offered to you, and maybe deep down your potential employer sees through the bullshit and realizes that too. But psychologically, you’re trying to lure them in, make them think that they just got really lucky and stumbled upon an unemployed rockstar.Put your projects on Github. This further emphasizes that you do what you love not to get paid, but as a passion in life, and you’re fine with giving it all away for free. You’re the Woz and the employer standing next to you thinks they’re like Steve Jobs, and they’re going to hire you and make a fortune off of you, because you don’t care so much about money. You want to look innocent and easy to exploit. You don’t work 80 hours per week because people are forcing you to work 80 hours per week. You work 80 hours per week because it’s fun!The one thing you shouldn’t worry about people asking you is how you can afford to live in Silicon Valley if you’re not working. No one ever asks that. It’s a good question I still don’t have the answer to. How do all these unemployed people survive in the most expensive housing market in the country?

Are doctors richer than programmers?

Rich in terms of net worth is fundamentally different than income, even though they are correlated. The other answer does not take into account the opportunity cost - long years of expensive (250k+ graduate debt) and stressful medical school, 80-120 hours/week of grueling residency for many years getting paid at near minimum wage and 40%+ taxes that a doctor has to pay once he finally gets board certified and gets paid "tons of money". On top of that, you cannot write off your student loan interest off your taxes with a physician's salary. As the other answer mentioned, doctors "can" make a wheelbarrow of money. However, to get an orthopedic surgeon residency to eventually make 400k, you have to score at the top (1-5%) of an already smart group of test-takers and take 5-6 years of residency and possibly an extra fellowship of 1 year. That means most ortho doctors start at 33-36 years old. Seriously, a smart person who goes through all that their whole life deserves 400k a year (before taxes). Very few doctors actually become orthopedic surgeons. Most "average" doctors in terms of USMLE Step 1 scores end up in internal medicine, pediatrics and primary care which pays 150-200k. People don’t realize that and only focus on the well-paid specialties that make up a much smaller population.Malpractice insurance costs around 50k a year. Some doctors end up in huge crippling debt that doubles every 8 years. People tend to focus only on the sheer number of the salary but do not understand the sweat, blood and tears behind it - to get into medical school you need to do very well in school (3.7+ usually) and the MCAT while taking a plethora of extracurriculars, hundreds of hours of shadowing, research and volunteering. 45-80 hours a week of studying in medical school, and 80–125 hours a week working at arguably (sometimes less than) minimum wage as a medical resident for 3–7 years. When you’re finally a doctor, you have to deal with documentation and continuing education to keep your license on top of regular practice. That takes a lot of time. Most software engineers do not need to do well at the same level grades wise. Generally, I would say a 3.0+ would suffice for employment with an internship or two. And these internships are usually paid. Not that software engineers are remotely dumb or anything - but the demand on academic grades is generally lower. Real-world experience and talent trumps grades in the tech world. In fact, Google does not consider GPA.A software engineer can make from $70,000 to 6 figures out of college depending on location. Their income also increases if they become lead software engineer etc to an average of $100,000-160,000 depending on locale. Some experienced sought-after software engineers make $200-400k if they are in the top echelons of a top company like Google, Apple and Facebook in Silicon Valley. Others go on to startups that could make millions plus. I know of one software developer that sold his company for 4M when he was 28 and a few others that exited at millions too. A doctor doesn't even finish school and residency then. Both careers will make decent money, but assuming the average case, software engineers are usually richer in terms of net worth, because of less debt and lower opportunity cost (an average 7-8 years head start). If they open a company or get stock options, they will make even more, if you adjust for after tax values, assuming the software developer is a good investor/business developer as well.
