What are strangest questions asked to Indonesians about Indonesia while abroad?

The list of questions and assumptions I’ve encountered during my travels and summer school programs:“Does that mean you live in Bali?”I honestly wish I did, but I live in Jakarta, since you know, there’s more to Indonesia than just Bali. (This was years ago, thanks to travel blogs on Youtube, foreigners these days seem to know more of Indonesian islands than just Bali.)“You must not eat pork, then?”As some would automatically presume that I’m Muslim, since Indonesia’s majority is of Muslim religion. I would kindly correct them that I am Christian and I eat pork.“I thought you were from the Philippines, since I figured that all women in Indonesia would wear hijab.”An encounter in Europe, where a lady sat next to me and my sister’s table, a Muslim woman herself, assumed that Indonesia was like the UAE. I’d imagine it would be weird if it applied here since the minority here’s still considered a large number.“Is it hard to buy alcohol there?!”It’s not, but alcohol prices here are quite expensive, and it’s prohibited during Ramadhan.“Do you really bring your own spices every time you travel abroad?”A Japanese friend curiously asked me as she saw a part of my suitcase that was equipped with Indomie, Boncabe, and Sambal ABC sachets. Not all, but most do. It was more than essential to carry when I went to Europe (my palette just can’t match with theirs, it’s too bland.)“Do Indonesians speak English as good as you do?”No, unfortunately. I’d even express that at times it may be hard for locals to assist foreigners, even for people in the capital, and that I’ve been often dragged in as an interpreter in some situations.“Are all Indonesians born with long names?!”This was a funny one. One of my Korean lecturers asked this during name calls. Let’s just say my full name isn’t exactly the most practical to circle down during national exams, my father had even purposely skipped by ‘marga’ (family name) during my grade school registration forms. But then again, a Korean asked this, so it should be understandable as to why he found it shocking. But I’ve never seen names longer than three to four.“Is your economy that weak..?”Rupiah’s obviously weakened this past year, but we’re not exactly dumbstruck poor, as most would presume that we live in shacks or poor rural houses. The rich-poor gap does remain a far one, though.

How do I build a messaging app step by step for Android?

I have already tried to develop a messaging application and had been a failure every time so let me share by experiences.Well by messaging app I guess you mean an instant messenger application rather than a sms messaging app.Improving upon a hackathon idea which we won, we decided to make a messenger application for people from same locality to chat. I am quite a naive developer at that time and Instant Messaging is a beast. Even after about 1 year of experience developing android apps thinking about developing an Instant Messenger is a nightmare for me. Nevertheless I did develop the application and I chose the easiest path available at that time i.e Parse.Parse had an easy to use api to get started with push notifications and allowed one-million push notification free per month which is more than enough for me. So I got started with Parse and developed the application. It had few issues like higher latency a few times etc. but I am okay with it since I didn’t want to dethrone whatsapp with my speed, I just wanted to develop an application which allows me to chat with other person having the same app. The app was never a success(that is a completely different story) but it was a great learning experience for me and I had a proud feeling that I could develop an app which had few of the functionalities of a major app like whatsapp all by me.The app continues to be on the playstore but on one auspicious day Parse announces that they are going to shut down Parse after being acquired by Facebook within a few months. I didn’t plan to move the app to another service since anyway it didn’t have any users. I had given up but my partner didn’t(non-technical partner). So looking at him I decided, okay let me take another look at it. Now I even won’t be able to understand what monster have coded at that time but I am ready to face it. For two days I would be flabbergasted at the mess I made but slowly I would pick up and make it better. So I started looking for options. First thing that came into my view is GCM/FCM(Google Cloud Messaging/Firebase Cloud Messaging). Even while I was using parse I tried to use GCM. There was a registration form at that time to be able to use GCM and I never got a reply back from Google allowing me to use it. Nevertheless I tried to look at their documentation. It is pure horror for me since I had no idea of HTTP or XMPP protocol and hence I could make no sense of it. Recently I came back at it , But now I am equipped with the knowledge of HTTP hence going through the HTTP part of the documentation has been a breeze for me. And there is no registration form as well you can directly get access to GCM credentials. I am able to achieve a push notification on the android app. Now I wanted to try using XMPP but it still took me about 2–3 days to understand what GCM with XMPP means. At this point of time you might be confused as to what is HTTP and what is XMPPHTTP:- It is the protocol which powers standard web and hence the most popular protocol. It can be used along with GCM to send push notifications. The process is this, you implement a web server using any framework of your choice Node.js/Django/Ruby on Rails/Laravel etc. Each android device gets a unique gcm_id which can be stored on the server. If the server sends a HTTP request to GCM url with the registration id of your device you would be receiving a notification. The process is very simple to implement. On the server side I used python-gcm (only supports GCM HTTP) along with Django to handle the HTTP requests.XMPP :- It is the protocol which is mainly used for messaging applications and hence is not as popular as HTTP. Its latency is considered to be less than while using GCM with HTTP and hence is used in speed critical applications such as Instant Messaging. XMPP with GCM supports both downstream messaging i.e sending push notification from server to android app and upstream messaging i.e sending messages from android app to server and there is a Google server in between which acts as a middle man. To implement XMPP with GCM one needs to make an XMPP connection with Google endpoint. So one needs to start a XMPP client and connect it to the Google endpoint in their server. The connection with the google server needs to be alive always . Now whenever your android app sends a message to Google endpoint your server would receive it and vice-versa.For many of the days I was confused with this XMPP server and client and what has to be implemented for using with GCM. I have tried many a times but since Google is filled with many discussions I always had to give up since after sometime I never knew what am doing. So let me explain the differences between XMPP server and client hereXMPP Server :- If you don’t want to use GCM for sending messages you can create an XMPP server of your own. I am still naive in this part and I am getting started in it, hence I can’t say many things about it. I am currently going through this book XMPP: The Definitive Guide Book to get started with implementing an XMPP server. Your android app opens a connection to this XMPP server and can use it for messaging. One drawback is you always have to maintain a connection with the server to be able to receive messages which might drain your battery.XMPP Client :- This is the part which is used in GCM. HTTP clients are very widespread but XMPP clients are few in number. For Java the preferred one is Smack and for python luckily I could found one in xmpppy. Now suppose you want to send a message from one android phone to another the path is like this Android phone 1 -> Google -> XMPP client maintained in your server -> Google ->Android device 2.Now you might ask what is the need for XMPP Server when GCM alone can handle the messaging part. Although GCM is good enough most of the times it is not considered reliable. There are many developers who complained that the app didn’t receive the GCM notification few times. So all the big players such as Whatsapp do this. They don’t use GCM as the main service for their instant messenger. Instead they host their own XMPP server for sending messages. Whenever the android app is killed and hence the XMPP connection is killed , now if the server needs to send a message to the offline device they use GCM to send a push notification. Now when the user clicks on a push notification the app gets opened and makes a connection to XMPP server and fetches all the pending messages. So they use GCM only to sync the messages but not for mainstream messaging services.XMPP is not the only option for instant messaging. Many people used sockets as well but I have never used them, so I refrain from commenting on them.

How to charge for conversion optimization?

Great question and complex as Vikram stated in his answer. At conversioner we're an end to end service which supplies an in-depth research of our client's audience, funnel analyzation and optimization materials such as landing pages, registration forms or pricing pages for example. This is why we work performance based. We treat our clients as partners, this means we work with some of them for long periods of time helping them grow and increase their KPI's. At the end of the day we judge our success by the P&L.We believe that working performance based is one of the best ways to increase partners, grow as a company and have mutual aspiration to keep increasing our clients conversions and revenues. Not all companies are equipped or willing to work this way for a various of reasons, for example we also work with startups that are just starting and are only just now working on their funnels and building their strategy. In this case we find different models to start out with but always come back to working performance based.
