As it happens, I visited the US for the first time in my life 2 weeks ago. I went to Washington (state) and Oregon, mainly to see two concerts by Dead & Co at the Gorge.I rented a Mustang convertible with my son, and drove just under a 1000 miles in a week, exploring Mt Reinier, Seattle, Portland, Wenatchee and the like. I stayed with family (parents of my son in law) in Yakima.My observations:While not your typical red neck country (especially Portland and Seattle are relatively Democrat-minded, I think), people on the whole seem to live quite off the grid: many build their own home (mostly wood), take care of electricity and water themselves and grow some of their own food. Even if they don’t, local, state and federal authorities are far away.The space! Not all houses are big, but most gardens are. For a Dutch guy (who happens to live in a relatively large house with a nice plot of land (> 4.000 m2), it is the concept of space that astounds: they can afford to waste space because there is just so much of it. Everything is laid out and planned in the knowledge that space is abundant. A crossroads of two quiet provincial roads (55 miles max speed) has the surface area of a soccer field. This is alien to people from the Netherlands and similar countries (as alien as the 4 stop rule).Even people that live in trailers (not everybody is rich!) usually have at least 3 cars per household, including at least one pick up truck (or SUV). These cars are big: A Mercedes GL(S) is extremely big in Europe but it is merely a mid-sized SUV in the Pacific Northwest. Same goes for a Hummer H2: ridiculous in Europe and (at least size-wise) average in the US. Given the prices of cars and fuel, and the state of public transport this is understandable. Also, one of the cars usually hasn’t been touched for yearsAlso, people love nature and go hiking / camping a lot. Nature is big and everywhere around you and perfectly organized (parking, waste-bins, etc). But you need a large car or RV, and a trailer for the kayaks.In Yakima Valley they grow a lot of apples and other fruits. Being from a major agricultural power myself (yes!), I was still impressed with the scale: everything is big!Even if just about everyone owns a gun, and lives off the grid (‘in the Outback’), people are nice to each other, whether you’re a tourist or customer or a neighbor. It feels a bit like pioneers living together.On the whole, my prejudices about Americans (such as they were) have grown softer and milder: I quite like their lifestyle and can easily understand the houses and cars when I stay in the country.

I’ll live in Seattle. In fact, I turned down CMO position at a billion-dollar company in L.A. so that I can stay in Seattle. Here is why:I have young kids. Instead of the long commute in L.A., I want to be able to spend more time with my kids. Seattle traffic is bad. But, it’s a much smaller city. The commute is way easier in Seattle than L.A.No state income tax. This is a huge benefit. Salary in Seattle is comparable to L.A., but you save more because you don’t pay state income tax.Housing is cheaper and property tax is comparable. Housing in S. Cal is expensive. Seattle is expensive as well, but it’’s still cheaper than L.A.Washington State Government is in a better shape than California state government financially. In general Europeans and particularly northern Europeans do not fetishize their flag or give it undue respect. We do not have an equivalent of the Bellamy salute Bellamy salute - Wikipedia or oath which began in 1892 and until 1942 saw US children give a fascist / Roman / NAZI salute to the flag each morning. That salute was replaced in the depth of WW2 with a hand on heart formally defined by Congress in an updated flag law. All this stuff is anathema to Europeans. It has nothing to do with patriotism as we understand it.There are and have been many suggestions why the USA defined acts and oaths by law which came to be understood as patriotism. The USA had been riven by a civil war in the 19th century. The USA was a socially riven society thereafter with many appaling injustices based on colour of skin. The USA missed its opportunities to develop like comparative societies (in Europe) thanks to the robber barons at the cusp of the 19th to 20th century………….I could go on… but i am sure others have made the point.I would have ignored this question, even downvoted it, except I do realise that US Americans misunderstand patriotism. And this means they do not see that we love our countries as well. I would suggest our love is perhaps finer.I return to add a titbit of information today 18 xii 2017 - In both Denmark and Norway but more Denmark the flag is used as decoration for birthday cakes and other silly parties like house warming or such like but birthdays - little Danish flags! The Norwegian flag is becoming quite common now on winter wear. I remember as a child associating the Norwegian flag with lip balm and hand cream. I now associate the Norwegian flag with my wife & she I have had many conversations about how vexilogy and contemporary popular culture intertwine at times. Almost everytime she sees my country´s flag it is being used (joke I) to subvert laws and conventions on the promotion of alcohol. For if you see an Irish flag at a distance of 100 metres in most European cities you know a supposed “irish bar” lurks directly underneath. I continue to joke: Everytime I see someone in rain wear bracing and braving the harsh Barcelona winter months with a Norse flag icluded in the brand logo or the design I know I am looking at someone who probably has never braced or braved real winter.(added26.iii.18) It was no joking matter when in February 2018 during the Winter Olympiad a lady from Seattle in the USA, an author known commercially was sourced with apparent outrage and fear that the banner of the Confederacy (technically originally the naval jake of the CSA) now and forever associated with white supermacism, racism, “white nationalism/alt-right” was flying in her neighbourhood. The flag she had seen was Norwegian.
