My route was about three streets and I hit nearly every house on those three streets. Years later, my sister asks me to drive my nephew around to service his newspaper route. His route was literally the whole neighborhood he lived in, with sometimes only one or two papers delivered on a given street (hence the necessity to drive his route rather than have him walk it as I did back in the day…). Since then, local papers have gone weekly, or have disappeared completely, relegated to on-line websites with a fraction of the readers they used to command.The modern reality of media is that everyone has their own brand suited to their own tastes. Instead of driving a narrative, the media market tests it through clicks. That’s not influence, it’s prostitution. Worrying about media control is like worrying about people eating at Indian restaurants because you don’t like Indian food. No need to worry about that with a Chick-Fil-A across the street to suit you’re particular cravings.Education is a similar dynamic. Do you know what universities worry about? Declining enrollment. As universities produce less and less educational value at higher prices, people are just saying no. As a consequence, on-line courses have exploded. I took two this year at a cost of about forty dollars, for both. More people are choosing new educational models like Western Governors University which charges a reasonable flat rate and allows students to test out of various courses based on prior knowledge and experience. One of my friends got a Masters of Science in six months at a cost of a couple of thousand dollars, leveraging his accumulated knowledge of cybersecrity. Traditional institutions are scrambling to restructure in order to compete. Education is a problem taking care of itself, which is precisely why the Democratic Party, the patron of the traditional educational establishment, is being asked to get involved to “stem the tide”.Business often use SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) to assess their market position. It’s pretty clear that universities that have devolved into ideological incubators are at the losing end of that analysis.It is also useful to take a close look at the Democratic Party, which is in very tough shape. Geriatric leadership is the predictable outcome of a pay for play culture. The Clintons serve to illustrate what I’m talking about here. Could you imagine a Republican politician surviving a sex scandal of the magnitude of Monica Lewinsky and have his wife elected Senator of a major state, then run for and lose the nomination to a charismatic figure comparable to Ronald Reagan, be on the sidelines for eight years and then win the nomination of her party? That should be impossible, but it wasn’t because the Clinton’s political power derived from their ability to make it rain for their supporters in the political system. The Clinton Foundation was a pay for play institution of such magnitude that its audacity boggles the mind. Foreign governments routinely dumped tens and even hundreds of millions of dollars into it to have the Clinton’s broker concessions with the Federal government on their behalf. The money got spread around to buy support (a tactic both parties use, but particularly Mitt Romney). All Obama, or for that matter Bernie Sanders had was charisma and popular support. Sanders just doesn’t have the bucks or the infrastructure to compete on the real political playing field of the Democratic party; graft. Barack Obama, a historic figure by an measure, has no meaningful political legacy as a direct result of his having the wrong skill set. There are still Reagan Republicans, but there are no Obama Democrats. It is not surprising that Joe Biden’s extended family have long been skillful players in the money game, which is why he will be president in a few days which he may confuse with being reelected to the Senate.While this is very good for the geriatric leadership of the party, its very bad for the party itself, which is up against a progressive movement that can’t be bought off. The impeachment of Donald Trump was motivated by pressure from progressives in direct opposition to Nancy Pelosi’s cooler assessment that it was a no-win situation. At some point she lost that debate and like any good politician, sought to get out in front of it, but it’s not a winner for the party, as she well knows. The Democrats are not a party of the future, but one fighting to hold onto whatever power they have, caught between neo-Marxist on their left and honest folks to their right. That is in fact a “DOOM” dynamic. A party fighting to keep power can’t invent the future and the “progressives” are anything but progressive. They represent the most objectively conservative movement I’ve seen in my life-time. Functionally, they are nihilists, objecting even to space exploration. No “new morning in America” from that quarter and certainly nothing good from shuffling gray figures unsure what year it is or what city they are in.When one understands this, a stolen election(s), staged violence, and desperate attempts to derail (barely) competitive social media platforms (Parler) can be seen for what they are: desperate acts of cornered animals.There will be no civil war, but rather an agonizing death (and hopefully a productive rebirth) of a dissipated political culture, full of sound and fury, but in the end, signifying nothing.
