Mathematics is the language of science. Science is the backbone of engineering. We know people love their gadgets and technology. Anybody who has studied advanced math is quickly starstruck at what France has contributed to mathematics. Some have their names inscribed on the Eiffel tower.Today, the Fields Medal is the highest award in mathematics. Contemporary French mathematicians have dominated their respective fields of study. If I'm not mistaken, France has the most Fields Medal winners.On my way to work, my train goes past "Ecole Polytechnique". This is France's elite military school: West Point meets MIT. Most of the mathematicians listed above attended that school. The school's symbol is "X". It produce mutants.

When I was 14, I went on a school tour to Paris. It was an amazing experience - the Louvre, Montmartre, the Champs Elysees, and the Eiffel Tower. At the foot of the Eiffel Tower, street vendors were selling all sorts of things: flying toys, leather belts, bullwhips and six inch daggers. While the teachers weren’t looking, some of my schoolmates bought daggers.Late one afternoon, after a lot of walking around that day, we returned to our hostel. When I saw my bed, I flopped down onto it. The next instant I heard a rip. A six inch dagger had cut into the collar of my shirt.Someone - one of my classmates - had positioned his dagger under the sheets of my bed, pointing upwards. I don’t know why he did it, a joke perhaps, or maybe he didn’t like me. I’ll never know. When I flopped onto the bed, the dagger’s blade missed my neck by just an inch. Had I fallen somewhat differently, I could have bled to death in seconds.People were incredulous, but I would show them my shirt with the cut in its collar, and they would go quiet.

Many of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Los Angeles do not have sidewalks by design. Because there are no sidewalks in Bel Air, streets in this gated community are equally used by cars, pedestrians, jogging moms with strollers, and cyclists.
