A PhD is just another academic degree, except that it is the highest one can attain.There is a high school degree, and then an AB (which is a 2 year college degree) and then a BA or BSc (which are 4 year college degrees). I would say in a perfect world you would do both. They both offer you unique and valuable forms of experience. I myself went to 4 different art schools over a period of 7 years and got my BA. I went to schools in different parts of the country and graduated with high honors, magna cum laude. My story has a personal back story related to my family which is a part of the reason it took 7 years and I suspect yours won't. I started out as fine art switched to graphic design and then architecture, took a break and worked as a bartender in a very cool place in Boston surrounded by creative coworkers taking random art classes and went back to get my degree in industrial design.The movie director Francis Ford Coppola has a quote that always stuck with me (forgive me if I'm off a little I am paraphrasing a bit) "It's about your talent and your willingness to keep working; if no one will hire you to make a movie, make the movie anyway." So in the comment under your question where you mention getting out in the world and "create, create, create" keep that spirit with you whether you're in school or not. Also, if you are not in an area loaded with creative people I would say relocate to one. In the US there's NYC, Boston, Providence, Chicago, Austin, LA, SF, Portland, Seattle, (just off the top of my head from my own experience) as major cities teeming with creativity on all levels.Professional advice:1 - If you jump from school to school it's good for experience but can be a hassle and end up costing more. Colleges love to not accept other colleges' credits so they can charge you more, plan ahead.2 - Be a good person, make lots of creative friends, and keep at a safe distance from negative, catty, hyper judgmental creative people. You don't need to avoid them totally just beware. Friends and relationships will help shape your future and everyone knows everyone in each discipline so once you're out in the world maintain those good relationships.3 - look into schools that will let you keep your place if you take a year off. Good art schools can be like drinking from a fire hose. You work like crazy in school and immediately move on to the next subject. Being able to take a semester or two or even a year off and dig deeper on your own with the stuff you enjoyed last semester could be a good thing.4 - travel abroad, typically schools have great study abroad programs take advantage of those if you can. If you have the means to do it on your own I would say do that too, it's another good experience separate from doing it in the school/group thing.5 - if you can go to school abroad I would say do it. There is a hard to measure but obvious value in adopting another culture, language, way of life. Holland is a remarkably creative country, Germany, Cologne is prominent art hub, France, Italy, Spain, parts of Asia, Brazil are all exciting places with great creative energy.6 - consider getting a certificate if you are unsure of your major or focus. It's good experience and exposure to what you're interested in. Most schools will allow you to transfer those credits into the degree if you decided to commit and if you decide not to commit, some credits may be transferable but at least you didn't spend 4 years on it before you figured out it wasn't for you.7 - make friends and relationships with creative people of all ages and disciplines, don't be an age snob. You would likely jump at the opportunity to be friends with David Hockney, just because some older artists are not as famous doesn't mean they don't have valuable insights, knowledge and connections that could benefit you. In turn you should share with them the current art/art school world from a young person's perspective. Same goes for younger people when you get older.Hope it helps!
