PDF Editor FAQ

Are 400GB SD cards just defective 512GB units like some CPU chips are damaged versions of higher power chips?

Here we have manufacturer honesty.Tell me, when you bought 8GB HDD as declared on Internet what was capacity Windows tells you before formatting? It is less!Yes, HDD platters could store 8GB but some space is taken by HDD firmware and various bad sector tables.SSDs are similar to HDD here if not worse. “Older” SSDs allocate quite a lot of capacity for overprovisioning. For example default on my Samsung 970 Pro 1TB is 10% or as in my case 95GB! 95GB lost cause SSD keeps this area for bad sectors. Some manufacturers to not tell you anything about overprovisioning. That’s maybe in your case.Modern drives even do not use overprovisioning any more. Better to say, they do not mention it but they suffer more (TLC/QLC wear is much higher then MLC/SLC).

Which HDD company is the best?

As someone who works in data recovery, I assume by “best” you’re referring to most reliable and won’t crash out on you losing all you data. In my experience that’s the most common cause of a hard drive being “bad”.Here’s the basic breakdown as I see it working in this profession.Toshiba - Most reliable 2.5″ hard drives. So for laptop or small portable drives these are what you want. They almost never show up for recovery.HGST (formerlly known as Hitachi) - Best in the 3.5″ hard drive category. Toshiba 3.5″ drives are also very good, but most (excluding their very latest drives) were actually rebranded HGST drives. Technically HGST is owned by Western Digital, but they are manufactured separately and using very different architecture. There are a few newer ones you do have to watch out for, as WD has started to sneak in a few WD Blue drives disguised under the HGST name. Tip: If it has a DCM code, it’s not a real HGST drive.Western Digital - Pretty average quality drives, but often fail due to firmware issues. Interestingly, many of the newer WD Black series drives (the more expensive performance ones) are now rebranded HGST drives.Samsung - Pretty good drives. More reliable than WD if, and only if, it’s actually a Samsung you are getting. Samsung and Seagate cross brand quite frequently, so it’s not uncommon to have a Samsung branded drive that is actually a Seagate, or a Seagate external that is actually a Samsung inside.Seagate - Made great drives years ago. I’d still recommend an old 40Gb Barracuda. But today, they are just selling bottom of the barrel crap under a well known brand name. Their 2Tb and larger drives are seeing astronomical failure rates. So bad that one 3Tb model landed them in a class action lawsuit. So, to sum up. Stick with Toshiba or HGST and you’ll be getting one of the best drives.

When I plug in my 128GB Samsung SSD, it shows up fine, but other programs and Windows detect it as an HDD. Was I scammed?

Assuming you are running Windows, download Samsung’s Magician software. It will tell you if it’s a genuine Samsung SSD and amongst other things install and notify you of firmware (the software inside the SSD) updates as well as monitoring the SSDs health.SSD Tools & Software | Download | Samsung V-NAND SSDEdit: As pointed out by Oliver Walter in a comment (thanks) Magician’s health monitoring can’t be relied on.
