What sexism has Inna Vishik faced in her career as a physicist?

I am hesitant to answer this question because anyone who gives anything other than the sanctioned response is liable to get attacked, even if they are giving an honest answer about their personal experience when queried about their personal experience. Nevertheless, I think it is important to share my perspective in order to provide a counterpoint to popular assumptions about male dominated fields. It has always felt unnatural for me to view things from the lens of gender. Women are 50% of the population and encompass the full spectrum of experiences and opinions held by humanity. Thus, it is hard for me to identify with such a broad category when I seek ‘people who are like me.’ Of course, women in physics do constitute a minority, approximately 20% at junior levels, though the number varies widely by institution, geography, subfield, and circumstance. Still, 20% is enough solidarity such that I am rarely the only one. Even in this case, grouping myself with other women might not yield the the most meaningful clustering. In that same room, I might very well be part of a 20% minority of people who grew up in the United States or a 20% minority of people who enjoy running as a hobby. If I want to isolate myself even further, I am often the only blonde in the room, the only person wearing makeup in the room, and the only person under 5’2” in the room (full disclosure of my tribalist tendencies: they are towards the girl or boy in the physics lecture wearing mascara). The point is that there are many ways one can perceive themselves that isolate them from others and many arbitrary commonalities that they can use to find affinity with others. It is my experience that I can find deep common ground with most physicists, many of whom are a different gender, ethnicity, national origin, or religion from me, after we come out of our nerd shells. It is also my belief that to be a good scientist, you must be comfortable with being an isolated weirdo on occasion, because you must sometimes go against the grain to make progress in science. With this clarification, it stands to reason that I do not think that I have been disadvantaged relative to my cohorts thus far. I believe that everyone has a unique set of circumstances, some of which advantage them and others which disadvantage them. I might miss out on some networking opportunities because I am not in some mythical boys’ club, but I can hardly claim that my experience in my career thus far is more difficult than people who came to a new country for graduate school or are the first in their family to get a PhD. Any negative stereotypes people in my field might have about me being a woman, or more likely, being the type of woman who draws on her eyebrows every morning, they have not vocalized it in such a way that it is memorable. I am not claiming that I have never been subjected to negative sexism, but in my mind, it is hard to distinguish those effects from people who are assholes to everyone and my own personality traits that hold me back—being too shy, not working hard enough, not seeking enough help. Fortunately, I also feel that I have agency to do better regarding my own shortcomings, and I enjoy a good kvetch fest with my friends in the field about the people who are perpetually unpleasant.Despite where you think I am going with this answer, I want to emphasize that in modern physics academia, no one pulls themselves up by their bootstraps. Almost everyone who is in my position got there because sufficiently influential people believed in them, promoted them, and gave them the material resources (equipment, samples, introductions, travel funds) to be able to demonstrate their talents. In my case, my undergraduate, PhD, and postdoc research advisors (all men, incidentally) gave me the tools to begin to establish myself. Overall, I have been fortunate to have colleagues and (especially) mentors who do not discriminate based on superficial characteristics. And the role of luck cannot be diminished either. Some people believe that making it to any specific phase in an academic career, whether it is finishing a PhD, getting a postdoc, getting a faculty position, or getting tenure, is solely a matter of merit. In many fields of physics, luck plays an important role in finding the right mentors, falling into the right research problem, and developing an academic brand that someone just so happens to be looking for a decade later. Many excellent people don’t make it from no fault of their own and no fault of others trying to hold them down.In talking to people outside of academia, I have noticed that the public perception of physics and other fields with similar demographics is very much influenced by the opinions of people who don’t actually work in those fields. The result is a simple narrative of why women exit these fields or choose not to enter in the first place, and a limited understanding of the skills the career requires. The fact of the matter is that harassment and prejudice, happens in every single profession, even female-dominated ones. While some (not all) may have a negative experience in physics, if we are to build a narrative of an entire field based on anecdote, why not show the travel to exotic locations? Why not show the thrill of successfully debugging a complicated lab machine? Why not show a natural phenomenon that no one else has ever seen before popping up on a grad student’s computer screen? Why not show a former student bumping into a professor at a restaurant and telling them how their class from a decade ago changed their life? It is important that we not invent statistics based on a preconceived narrative, and it should also be noted that even accurate statistics do not say anything definitive about the individual. I sincerely hope that young women who want to pursue physics are not dissuaded by the media and by negative individuals they encounter, and that they seek out a wide variety of perspectives on this career. This answer is all anecdote, but if you want statistics, they can be found at the links below.https://www.aip.org/sites/default/files/statistics/faculty/womenfac-pa-10.pdfhttps://www.aip.org/statistics/physics-trends/representation-women-among-physics-bachelors-and-phdshttps://www.aip.org/sites/default/files/statistics/lsags/PhysRevPhysEducRes.12.020109.pdfhttps://www.aip.org/sites/default/files/statistics/international/globalsurvey-equality1-15.pdf

How does it feel to travel alone?

Santa Teresa, Costa RicaI clumsily made my way towards the ferry; my small rolling bag and backpack in tow having just exited my taxi cab in Punta Arenas. The air was warm and the sky was bright from the noon day sun and I was full of expectation, yet also a bit apprehensive. “Had I made a mistake coming here all alone.” For the next nineteen days I would relax on the beach and surf, rejuvenate my downtrodden soul from the daily toil of my life. It was a departure from my typical adventures; but the thought of being lonely weighed on my mind.I sat by the ferry terminal waiting to be whisked away to my tropical paradise. I had been to Santa Teresa once before for a couple days on a previous land trip through Costa Rica. The ambiance of this little surfing town had imbedded itself in my mind. I knew someday I would return.Soon after I had sat down, other people started trickling towards the pier. A couple young female backpackers sat down beside me speaking in a foreign tongue. You could tell that they had been traveling for some time, yet they both maintained an understated beauty. They spoke animatedly and joyously. Indeed, I wished I had brought a friend along. “I should introduce myself,” I thought; but in my typical fashion I was reluctant to create an awkward situation. “Perhaps they don’t speak English.” A perfect excuse not to make an introduction. “I’m full of excuses.” My Captain had told me that once. It stung with the might of a thousand wasps. Finally, the ferry arrived and as I got up from the bench and began walking towards the gangway one of the backpackers grabbed my attention. “Here, you dropped this,” she spoke in exquisite English and with a subtle European accent. “Thank you,” I mumbled. “Where are you girls from?” “Austria,” she paused, “Vienna to be exact.” Soon enough the three of us were being whisked away by the ferry to Playa Naranjo where we would catch a ride to our final destinations.Sofie had dark brown hair, a subtle smile adorned with various piercings here and there, and eyes that betrayed some shyness. Andrijana had dirty blonde hair and sported a huge smile to go along with a most rambunctious personality. Indeed, she was the one that had initiated our introduction. They had planned to go to the town of Montezuma, but I convinced them to come with me to Santa Teresa. After arriving in Santa Teresa, I found a nice hostel and offered my newfound companions the option to stay with me for the duration of their stay, to which they agreed. The next six days were some of the best experiences I’ve ever had traveling abroad. We laid in hammocks by the beach which descended sharply from lush mountaintops, and listened to the roar of Howler monkeys from the rainforest high above and the steady pounding of the surf. We cooked meals together and at night admired the stars, captivated by their daily ritual. On one particular day we decided to rent a couple atv’s and make the hours long journey along the coastal dirt roads to Montezuma to swim under a waterfall.Eventually, Andrijana and Sophie went on their way, and I still had a couple more weeks in Santa Teresa; but soon I had made other friends. That is all to say that now when I travel alone, the fear of loneliness no longer sullies my spirit, for in any given corner of the earth a potential friend awaits your introduction. Travelling alone forces you to meet people you would otherwise never meet. I highly recommend you give it a try.
